This sound could 100% be used as psychological torture. Even if the sound wasn't loud, the tone is enough to fuck with your brain. You can only imagine just how messed up you would be in the head after experiencing this first hand

The test planes literally shook themselves apart In flight. So many adjustments had been made that they were no longer fitting together well. This contributed to the project's abandonment, primarily cost of maintenance. These would've required complete replacement after only a few flights.

IIRC the immense sound and shockwaves from the endless sonic booms created by the supersonic propeller were bad enough to cause some miscarriages in the residential parts of the base, in addition to headaches, nausea, vomiting, and 1 seizure among ground personnel around the planes when the engines were on. It was either this plane, or the XF-88 Voodoo which also used a supersonic prop and jet engine.
@BrapBrapDorito
@BrapBrapDorito Жыл бұрын
This (the XF84H) used a twin coupled turboprop with an afterburning nozzle on the exhaust for thrust, and was the main cause of the harm from supersonic propeller testing. The XF88B used two afterburning turbojet engines along with a singular one of the coupled engines seen in the XF84. The XF88B was able to cross the sound barrier on propeller thrust only, but it was ultimately just a research vehicle and not worth pursuing.

The fly by sounds kind of funny initially, but imagine hearing that as an enemy on the ground. It would probably start as a distant wail and rapidly get more deafening and all-encompassing, ending with you being completely incapacitated on the ground, holding your bleeding ears.

I can’t imagine how epic it will sound at the Chicago air and water show. I can imagine how it will sound as it’s approaching the beach from like 50 miles away and you start to hear and kinda feel a low hum reverberating through the ground getting louder and louder. Then it gets even louder, starting to drown out the voices of ppl and city noises and people start wondering what kind of monstrosity is about to fly out of somewhere and make comments about how loud it is getting. Then it gets so loud that some ppl cover their ears, and you can see the XF-84 turning to position itself for a high speed pass from air show left 2 miles away and once the nose of it faces you, the noise dies down back to city noise and the announcer announces that the XF-84 is about to perform and that it will be ungodly loud and it gets closer and closer at it’s full speed, then it gets almost in front of you but you still can just barely hear it. Then it zooms past and you get hit in your whole body with the absolute loudest noise you ever heard a fighter jet make, louder than anything that has an afterburner in existence as it flies away and the sound reverberates through the atmosphere and the buildings making it sound like god is using a desk fan and every single atom in your body, the ground, and the air shakes violently and ppl are just speechless

The Soviet Union managed to get an aircraft into service with four supersonic propellers - the Tu 95 'Bear'. How did they manage that, when the US couldn't get around the noise and vibration issues, though? Simple, they just ignored those issues. Crew with any substantial amount of Tu 95 time generally have some measure of hearing loss.

I suppose you are being clever and stimulating the _neuropsychological_ effect of such a sound and volume, but your interpretation of the sound cannot be more wrong. The “Thunderscreech“ was so darn loud because its propellor´s wingtips were supersonic. Especially when there is a complex admixtureo of subsonic and supersonic flow, the resulting sound can be described as teeth-rattling white noise and an unholy howling shreek -- _Not the modified hum of a square wave generator._
@BrapBrapDorito
@BrapBrapDorito 8 ай бұрын
So two things: 1 - this isn’t a square wave, it’s a triangle 🤓👆 2 - The sound was definitely more like static or white noise than this, but the constant sonic booms of the propeller would create a sound of this frequency, just far punchier. Recordings don’t do it much justice because it just blew out any microphone used on it. I may retry this at some point.
