Really interesting to hear all this! I have looked into studying and working full time, but have not committed to it yet. It's not so much the cost, but the time, and deciding the real reasons why I think I want a Masters degree. There's also a matter of which institution has a better reputation within the industry - In my industry (not "iT" related), for the same qualification it seems like some institutions cater to people in management who need to tick a box to get promoted, and others are aimed at people with, or looking at a technical career.
@Thuvu52 жыл бұрын
Indeed, I also see the time as the real cost behind all this commitment. Sometimes in the weekends staying up late to meet the courses' deadlines, I bitterly realized it was a huge investment giving up relaxation time and bits of social life 😅. And agreed with you about the "ticking the box" syndrome at several workplaces. Companies might end up hiring someone who's got the "right" degree but not capable of doing the actual work.. That's very sad.

Thank you so much for the video. I wish i was was focussed as you are when i was your age. I'm 40 years old and dont hold a degree as i had to start working immidiatly out of school. I worked for the banking industry for over 15 years and to be honest lied to my self saying i didnt need a degree anymore . However a year back i took a break from work to focuss on my son who is now 4 and give him the father that i never had. Im not a person who can just sit idle so i started a small business and also started fidling around courses in coursera . I never though i would love computer science and programming but i realise my curious little mind is tickled with everybit i lear about it. So now i am cosidering getting i to tech and also considering the qualifications i should obtain. I know im older but i keep my self fit and my mind active . Sorry for the long post but it showcases how much you ispire people for them to pour out their hearts after watching a video. I would apprecite any advice you or anyone in the comments could provide . Thank you all

If you’re looking into higher education as a mature student, it’s worthwhile knowing that both Open University and University of London offer fully online bachelor degrees, but in the UK they also grant certificates (equal to a whole first year of university) and diplomas (equal to two years of study). British schools grant a bachelors in 3 years because they usually don’t require a first year of all around basics (I.e. if you study history they won’t make you do maths, and if you’re in science they won’t make you take literature). Unlike US schools, the price is just vastly more affordable. I wish you every good wish in your admirable pursuit of higher education because it really never ever is too late! Consider looking into Open University because busy adult learners are their specialization and they have loads of options from computer sciences to earth sciences to the humanities 😊

It really is a bold move, I wouldn't particularly do this, I am well with learning on my own pace and there is an overload of information on-line. I've studied engineering for my bachelors and sadly not much from the class was really absorbed and I learned better studying on my own, reinforcing my knowledge with online courses. I found that if I had the program of the course I could learn better on my own with a community that was willing to help me, when I got into my bachelors it was a terrible experience where I mostly learned how to demand what you paid for from the universities administration, as the overall desorganization left me in shambles, besides there was a rule that no teacher could give contact information and I spend weeks if not months tracking down teacher that would not commit to showing up to class, so much to even tracking down where some of them lived, what car they drove and some close relatives... I felt more specialized in investigation then engineering.

What kind of jobs are you looking at that require a degree in CS? Finance, data analytics, data science? Btw, her conclusion was spot on and is super relevant to you. Since you already have a bachelors, MBA, have done self-learning and got your own certificates, I don't know if it's really worth going back to school just to get a Computer Science degree on paper. I think as an employer, I would be more impressed if you learned what you needed to learn on your own online and applied what you learned by building your own software project. Of course there's a very high risk that you get lost while learning on your own. Companies requiring a degree in CS are probably not worth working for, unless you are really interested in a niche area that requires a masters in CS.

Hey I just wanted to know if this particular degree provides flexibility to be completed in 2 years instead of 3?
@potatohead6470 Жыл бұрын
Listening to everything makes me doubt whether I can do it without any background in maths or data science. I have recently completed my Google Analytics Data Science course, and my goal is to secure a job as a data scientist overseas. However, being 34 years old, I wonder if I am too old for this career path
@hgirl2146 Жыл бұрын
You are never too old to start university, just do it. In 3 years, you will be 37 anyway , so why not be 37 with a degree ? Plus ,you will be able to earn more with the degree 😊 Good luck 😊

thank you so much for this video , I am new in the tech, I studied social sciences and for change of career I need to study again , I don't have any economic support so I need to work full time, and also study, I was wondering if is any problem with you degree being taught online? do you think many employers get bother about this way of obtaining this degree? (sorry I am not native in english)
@Thuvu55 ай бұрын
Hey, thank you for commenting. There are always pros and cons when it comes to online degrees. I think you’ll need to rely on self study and discipline more when studying online. There’s no fixed time for class lectures but there are fixed exam days that you need to submit your work. There is a Slack community of students that you can post questions and get help from other students. And there’s programs support by they are usually pretty slow to respond to your case. So this is something to account for

An online degree should never cost 11000£. That's insane.
@Abstractor21 Жыл бұрын
It's not an online degree by itself, that's the thing. It's a degree like any other, you can do it online if you want to. And of course you can do a masters or PhD after that, but the best thing is that the degree itself is not recognized as an 'online degree' just a regular bachelor's degree from the university of London so employers won't know if you went to study physically there or not and even if they knew you wont have the stigma that comes with having an online degrees (employers tend to think online degrees are worthless compared to a "real" degree) It's very flexible you can finish it in 3 years while working full time job. It is less than 460 pounds per month there are more expensive degrees here in Uruguay so Imagine... I would like to find a less expansive degree from a decent university but yeah, it's kinda hard honestly.
@johnwig285 Жыл бұрын
Yea that's insane, insanely cheaper compared to on-campus fees in the US which are 10x the price. You're literally getting the same content, just online. The only thing ure missing out is campus experience, connections, facilities and live events. Content is the same or even better coz of production quality.

While all your points are valid, I believe this video is misleading in terms of communication with the students - she mentions how some of the modules are redundant. May I ask how she knows that the student support were overwhelmed with student questions and requests… (sounds to me like you were told to say that). There’s still a lot a unanswered request by students. For a reputable uni, you mention how the uni is learning on the way and how some course module had issues or were not even COMPLETE YET? Why is it on the coursera platform and been sold for that price (£17,000) This just shows there’s a lack of accountability from the university and it should not be open to the public for that price. Lastly, did you graduate and get a transcript from the university? If you did kindly do a video showing this. -Thanks

Agreed!! 🙌 I think they do need some proof of English efficiency. So either ielts or another degree you followed that was fully in English would work

Hi, I'm planning to take the same degree. However, I have some doubts. I don't see any calculus, linear algebra, or statistics courses mentioned in the curriculum. I'm not sure how the system in the UK works, but since you’ve taken the degree, can you please tell me what courses are included in maths from this set: {algebra, Trig & Pre-calculus, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, Calculus 3, Linear algebra, Statistics & probability, geometry}? Please also include anything from the math courses that I missed. Your response will be really appreciated! Thank you!

Hello, thanks for the video and all the knowledge shared. I have a question regarding teamwork and getting to know your teammates. Did you do group work? Were there video call meetings to do the projects? Or was everything presented individually? I have a good experience as a Bootcamp graduate doing team coding projects and I would like to study for a bachelor's degree in Computer Science in the near future. I would like to know if that component of teamwork, asking your peers and working with them on projects was part of your experience in the University of London degree program? Thank you!
@Thuvu52 жыл бұрын
Hi Valeria, yes you do have teamwork in some modules. Some of the project assignments are group assignments. We mostly use Slack for communication and chatting with team members. If they live nearby you can meet up in person too of course

Hey was the bootcamp more focused on projects rather than learning the material and how much instructor support was there? I think both has their pros and cons.

No the exams are not proctored. You just get a 24h window to finish and submit the exam 😊

Hi Thu Vu. I just enrolled in this degree but thru performance based admissions. I have to say i have not been in contact with Maths for around 15 years now I guess. What would you suggest the math subjects I need to review before the course starts? Thank uu
@Thuvu5 Жыл бұрын
Hi Setto, congrats on starting the degree! I think you should be fine because the Math courses start from really the basics. Otherwise some KZbin video on Linear algebra and Discrete math would help too if you want a head start

@waynelast1685 Жыл бұрын
BS is a better foundation than MS if you have no formal training in Computer Science. The very nature of MS programs is only to review foundational topics even when they say they will provide an introduction. It's impossible to cover foundational and advanced topics in one two-year MS program.
@GoodByeSkyHarborLive11 ай бұрын
The overall courses are the same in the masters and bachelor's? And in the masters do they start the foundational topics from an entry level point or just assume you know everything and just go through problems?
