THX Logo History

Credit for all logos and captures belong to everyone who made them, no matter if they are the copyright owner, in which they are shown in this video. THX is a motion picture quality certification system (despite being branded as a "sound system" until 1997) founded by Tomlinson Holman and George Lucas in 1982 (in turn was then-owned by Lucasfilm Ltd. until 2002, when spun-off in its present day company - THX Ltd.), named after the first film Lucas directed,THX 1138. The first THX film was 1983's hit movie Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi. THX officially stands for "Tomlinson Holman's EXperiment". THX certifies fine-tuned home theater equipment, TiVo DVRs and some PCs. They have previously certified physical media such as VHS, LaserDisc, DVD and Blu-ray (and HD-DVD; Brave Story only) films from major studios, as well as video games. Previously owned by sound card manufacturer Creative Labs, THX was acquired by gaming peripheral manufacturer Razer (which acquired the developers of the Ouya game console) on October 17, 2016. I was privileged enough to have been able to see and hear the original "Deep Note" THX trailer at a press screen of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi a few days before its official opening. It was the very first (semi) public-facing screening of that trailer. It was in a huge theater in Westwood, CA with its brand new THX system. The swirling, buzzing around my head that resolved into that amazing huge chord thundering through me was one of the most amazing things I had ever heard. I'll never forget that. Being able to go through the whole history of THX trailers was a real treat. Thank you for that.

I find it interesting how THX is one of a select few companies from decades ago that NEVER changes the overall look of it's logo or even the way we all know the Deep Note to end. The trailers themselves vary tremendously, from being through an ellipse of sorts to being an entire futuristic space station. It's honestly incredible how THX keep pushing the boundaries of CGI for trailers that merely exist to advertise just how powerful their products can be.

I think this logo is pretty neat. The only scary part is the beginning, where all the musical voices are randomly sliding up and down. My 3 favorite versions are the Simpsons, Terminator 2, and Grand (9:39). Grand sounds like a spaceship taking off, and the final synthesized chord at the end gives me chills every time.

God I literally can not stop rewinding so I can hear the Warren Theaters variant of the "See you on the other side" logo. The remastered deep note gives me chills (in a good way) every single time. GOD I love that logo. Shame they retired it. I will stand by my thought that the deep note is singlehandedly the greatest sound ever produced by humanity. It's so damn powerful. I miss THX being in theaters. Every time I went to see a movie I looked forward to seeing which logo I'd see this time. I wish they weren't bought out by Razer. :(

THX: Ice Age 3 version (2009) Trailer: On a black background, we see Scrat and Aidan chasing after Scratte with the acorn in her hands. But during the chase, they crash into the big silver metal bar and the acorn gets stuck. They try to pull it out, but then they hear the beginning of the Deep Note and look up to the top of the bar which starts to vibrate. Scrat, Scratte and Aidan hold on to each other, and when the Deep Note gets loud, it causes all 3 to get blown a few feet away like a loudspeaker and popping the acorn back out. As Aidan, Scrat and Scratte sit back up, they saw that the big silver metal bar turns out to be the THX logo and the blue border appears along with the words "DIGITALLY MASTERED" on top and underneath and the registered trademark symbol next to the logo. Aidan, totally stunned by the logo, says "Whoa, now that's something you don't see everyday." Then the rock that says "The audience is listening" falls and hits Scrat, but Scratte and Aidan don't notice because they're still looking at the THX logo.

Ladies and gentlemen, the THX logo, the worst nightmare from your childhood. Why? The THX logo is really known for giving people nightmares with the "loud" Deep Note, especially children, as it appeared on Walt Disney children's DVDs. If you are into the cinema at night (it reopens if COVID-19 is over), when the THX logo was playing, you'll probably get scared, your heart will beat faster, and you'll shake of how scared you are of one of these THX trailers. But for every single THX trailer, I don't find them scary at all! I find them pretty cool, and the Genesis trailer (2019-Present) is the best THX trailer of all time, and the best 2010s cinema trailer _ever._ *Notice:* Don't watch these THX trailers at night. You'll probably don't want to get nightmares with the THX logo and the Deep Note, of course.
