My teacher refuses to teach how to use any calculator but the TI-BAII. Sure its cheap, but I already have a TI-84. I'm not going to buy a second lesser calculator just for one class when I already have one that can do all of this stuff. I really appreciate these videos. Thanks man.

I don't respond to all the comments, but this one made me chuckle -- especially since I know how frustrating these calculators can be when you are getting used to them (and the temptation to throw them through the nearest window). Glad the video was helpful.

@TheBlackwoolf The NPV does, but the IRR is unreliable is the cash flows change signs more than once (creates what is referred to as either the "Crossover" or "Multiple IRR" problems). Mathematically, the more times the cash flows change signs, the more solutions there are. In the normal case, there is only one crossover (the initial is negative, other cash flows are positive) so there is one valid solutions.

@high5flyer Yes, the CF0 is the initial investment. Essentially the calculator just does what you are discussing. When you enter the CF0 (you can enter 0 if there is no initial CF), it just adds up the present value of the other cash flows and subtracts the CF0 (actually adds it in as you need to make the CF0 negative if it is an outflow). Essentially the NPV is a capital budgeting tool, but you can use the NPV function on the calculator to find PV of a general uneven cash flow stream.

I think it's mostly students using these videos. I think very few people who are not going to school for business would seek these videos out and if they did it's very basic tools. As a student I think the videos are great. I don't have to ask professors or other students for direction making me a more independent student.

@karlaolivo I don't know if the TI-83 will give you the second one. Probably best to do it mathematically (solve for the k that makes NPV=0). Trial and Error would be another method (again, NPV = 0). It may even be a negative interest rate.

@tri2451 If doing NPV, it doesn't matter...just enter them as negative. If doing IRR, sometimes the calculator will provide an answer that it thinks "best" if there are multiple IRRs. However, I recommend not doing IRR if you have a crossover problem. Note that a crossover problem would occur with something like CF0 = -1000 CF1 = 600 CF2 = 600 CF3 = 400 CF4 = -200. Because the cash flows change signs more than once (between CF0 and CF1, then again between CF3 and CF4) IRR is not reliable

Just add the residual value to your final cash flow. Note that if this is set up so you have to estimate the after-tax cash flow associated with the residual value instead of given as an after-tax residual you will have to tax any gain/loss on sale.

@irufushi8 If its any consolation, these videos likely wouldn't be up if students like you weren't paying tuition (I made them for my students) and hopefully you're getting more from your classes than just the basics covered in these videos. If not, I understand the frustration. We always have room for more students at Pittsburg State and I promise you'll get some value added beyond these videos.

I was wondering if you could help me with this one. The question is: The investment in the new machine now is $100 mln. The expected net cash flow over the coming three years is $20mln., $40mln. and $70mln. as result of the investment. At the end of the three years the machine is sold for $20mln., the remaining book value is $10mln. by then the tax rate is 35%. The required cost of capital ( discount rate) is 8%. What is the NPV?

Hi there, I was wondering how I would enter in the cash flows for a project that I am repeating over several years. For example, it generates $6,000 in one year, then $7,000 the next, then $6,000 then $7,000 etc for a total of 12 years. Is there a way to enter in this sequence quickly without having to manually input each cash flow? Thank you!

My university college (Ghent) doesn't allow us to use TI calculators because they think we would write everything on it (which can be true :p) but the ones they have don't offer these options and my friends already had some exams with these formulas.. yep no one passed that.

@kevinbracker. I have to find the IRR where year 0 is -45,000,000. year 1 is 78,000,000 and year 2 is -14,000,000 since the sings change twice we are going to have two IRRs . My question is Can I get the two IRRs on the TI83 because I am only gettin 53% which is a right answer but I need the other IRR. PLEASE HELP

I tried to solve it mathematically through polinomial. But you never really know what the answer can be since the answers are all real numbers. O-o... and considering it might also be negative then theres no real way of knowing which one is right. Seeking the MIRR which is an approximate value fixes this BUT, you would need more information.
