TI-84 Plus Calculator Dead. Repair.

Wow. This saved my daughter. A month ago after not using the calculator for a few years, it wouldn't start. I tried a lot of things and eventually plugged it into the computer and the calc started. Then, yesterday, same problem and there is homework do tonight. I plugged it into the computer and it started once, but stopped. Like others, I tried using a toothpick to move the connector pins a little, but it didn't work. Yet, following your instructions, taking it apart and moving the connector pins (and cleaning all the contacts) did the job. I ran through the house with joy!

Thank you! Haven't used my calculator since graduating high school and now I need it for chem in my second semester of college and I almost died when it didn't turn on after putting new batteries in! This totally saved me and I didn't even have to open up my calculator, I just jammed a hair pin in the holes and jiggled it around until my calculator turned on.

I didn't have a t6 Torx screwdriver so I used a needle through the hinge holes to move the pins around. It worked! It might not last too long though so I'll have to get a proper screwdriver so I can secure the pins better. Thanks so much!

Thanks so much for the video! I just turned on a calculator I haven't used in 10 years! The contact was completely scratched out so I first wiggled them away from the calculator so I could check that the contact were actually touching a non scratched location. Then I kept bending one until it touched another spot. Thanks again!

it worked for me but then it shut down after a few mins of use. I checked the voltage in the 2 holes and it does show 6v, what do you think it can be ? I changed the backup battery as well as put 4 new AAAs

Thanks a lot. The failure of my Ti 84 was caused exactly by what you demonstrated. Problem solved! Just be careful when you have a teacher version ti 84, top and bottom case parts are connected with a flat cable. So separate it with little force to prevent creating addational damage.

This worked for me. I also went ahead and cleaned out any battery corrosion that had leaked into the inside of the calculator and clogged the connector bits. Either way, it works now. Thank you

Hi I have a Ti - 82 calculator that I bought on ebay, unfortunately after a while I was doing operations it crashed in particular while doing operations with a variable, after it got stuck, I tried to use the batteries to reset it but it did not given no result, I also changed the buffer battery, but nothing now turns on but nonsense digits appear on the display and it does not turn off! Batteries must be removed. Can anything be done to solve the problem? Thanks.

If you have the teacher's version with the port to project with the now-old-school projector, there is a ribbon cable going from the top case to the bottom case... careful! It's around the middle of the right half of the calculator (screen facing toward you)

Mine still didn't work, but the batteries only delivered somewhere arounf 4.8 volts. After cleaning the battery compartment with spray duster I now have a solid 6.5 volts.

For the record, on the 84+, the pins are accessable through the tiny holes at the battery cover. Almost gored a screw hole for that 😅

Hello do you know how to fix the ti-84 screen if the screen is scrambled. Almost as if it has a bad flex cable or something?

I have not encountered that problem on the 84+. There is a flat cable that connects the main board to the LCD screen. It connects to the upper part of the of the main board and wraps around the top of the board and connects to the LCD screen. There is a piece of black tape over it. That cable is the most likely trouble spot. I would try to press on those connections and see if it affects the screen. Maybe one of those connections needs to be re-soldered.

Hi, what if the one of the metal plates is a little corroded? I scrapped off the corrosion (not sure if i shouldnt have) but its still bad. Is there anything elae i can do or is the calculator a lost cause?

Scrapping off the corrosion is good. You could even polish the contact with a fine sand paper or polishing compound. You want to see shinny orange copper. Test the contacts thru the holes with voltmeter probes. If you do not get voltage at the contact, you may need to bend the contacts more. The most important thing is that metal contacts land on clean metal pads. It you are getting voltage on the contacts and the calculator still does not turn on, the problem in probably elsewhere.

There is probably some good metal under there. I have had good luck with fine grit sand paper and polishing compound.

You can not purchase the copper pads. If possible, try to polish it with polishing compound or very fine sand paper (600 grit). As a last resort you might try to solder some metal on it.
