This is wonderful, the fix worked! An important piece of information - a bad button battery is never the source of it not turning on. It will turn on with no backup battery installed.

My screws were hex. I had to use a T6 hex driver. Same one I used to strip down hard drives. Back when we still had hard drives. After that worked like a charm! My daughter is using the same calculator in high school that I used in college statistics!
@persistentforlife Жыл бұрын
Thanks for this! Added input: I didn't have the hex to open the entire calculator. I used your cleaning method just the same! When you open the battery cover, there are two exposed slots at the bottom where you can see those copper conduits for the battery and the cotton swabs fit perfectly! You can adjust the alluminum springs that complete the curcuit from there with tweezers until it is exactly in contact to function.

The contacts on my TI84 were corroded just as you described. I was able to fix it. Thank you so much. I really like the calculator and am really glad that it is working again

Thank you so much! So, I used a q-tip (like what you did) except I stuck it inside two holes (that shows a little bit of the board) below the battery compartment and twirled it around to clean off the erosion. Miraculously (at least for the time being), it works! Thank you for the guidance! Otherwise, I would have wasted my time and resources to locate and purchase another used TI calculator.

Here's a method if your short on time, open the back batter cover and you will see two slots on the bottom like at 1:22 in the video, without opening up the calculator, you can then use a screw driver to prod the wires back onto the circuit board. If my instructions were unclear, refer to this video cause this is where I got the method from. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnS2p4aNrL2srJo

Great video. My suggestion is before you start scraping and sanding on the board try some cleaning vinegar. This will remove the salt (from the leaking battery). Then clean with alcohol. The idea is to remove all corrosive from any place it can be.

Fine method. I soldered a thin copper wire across the damage, allowing the solder to cover the original gold pad. This will protect against corrosion. By abrading off the gold as described will leave bright copper which will corrode over time and may return the problem. So if you use the BarTech method put a tiny drop of light oil (e.g. WD40) over the repair. RJA.

Just fixed one TI-84 Plus Silver Edition yesterday. I bought it second hand claiming no keys working but when it arrived, it didn't turn on. The 4 batteries were full and new that came with the calculator. No matter what, it did not turn on with the ON key, so I decided to open it. I noticed the screws are not T6 but a T5 maybe. I used a specific screw bit to take out the top screws and then the other 4 screws were unscrewed with a partial worn flat screw driver gently to not worn out the screw heads. 6 torx screws out plus the philips. The hard part was to separate the top part from the bottom part. In the case of the Silver Edition, you need to take out the front plate for the keys or you are gonna put pressure on some keys. I started from the top clip, then the left lcd clip and right, then the bottom left and right clips and the bottom part is finally out.... to reveal a complete corroded negative pad on the pad. I also noticed some copper oxidation little sand over the shield and some probably scattered over the rest of the pcb. I gently sanded down the negative contact to reveal the copper. Nothing else was oxidised. To prevent this from happening again, I soldered two wires for negative and positive terminals from the battery to the PCB and this made the diagnostics easier. The calculator gave signs of life and like the seller said.. no keys working. I tried the method of the pin bit into the 2.5mm port but this didn't work. I installed the Ti-connect which allowed me to save current applications and then I flashed the offered ROM version 2.22 while the calc had 2.40. Still no keys. Then flashed 2.55MP version with same result. First link from Google showed an iFixit guide which says to clean the keypad array. So I unsrewed the 4 screws and released the key rubber protection from the huge PCB it seemed clean. First I blow over the side of the chips and pour alcohol over the copper contects fpr the keys and gently cleaned the copper contacts and while at it, I also cleaned the LCD and again one more time for the keys. The rubber seemed fine. Sure enough... the keys started working. It must have been some key contact hapnening. When I fixed a normal 83, some very tiny solder ball was left by me and did the same thing. To wrap up, I assembled the calc with the 2 wires soldered and enjoyed a fully working Ti-84 Plus Silver Edition for my collection. I also got concerned by the top black plastic flat cable for the LCD that was partially unglued, so I used some tape.

I have a TI-84 as well, but the back doesn't look like this. I'm always afraid of breaking something, so did a case come with your that you had to remove, or am I just looking at this the wrong way? I know the back should have an opening for the batteries, but it doesn't.

@@BartechTV yeah It really is and good for the environment and creates less e waste for landfills but clearly my math teacher does not understand are views on this because she had and 30 to 40 ti83 plus calculators with a little bit of corrosion and instead of getting them fixed or letting me fix them she threw them away 😤 it made me mad so after class me and my friends went from trashcan to trashcan and couldn't find them which sucks but atleast I got a ti 84 plus se and ti 83 plus out of the deal.and what makes me most mad is that these were brand new calculators that had batteries in them and over the years of no use corroded but still with like to minutes of work they would function fine.(btw at the walmart i go to they sell these for about $100 usd each so she easily threw away $3000 usd of calculators away and will have to be replaced with tax payer money)p.s im in 8th grade so I'm not super great at grammar so please excuse some mistakes in this long comment.
