I wish there were more movies like THE CHANGELING. It's all about atmosphere and CHARACTER. George C. Scott is wonderful as a scarred man--the opening scene is crucial. His last real starring role was EXORCIST III, another intelligent thriller. I wish 'spooky' was its own genre--I don't give a damn about knife-kill movies, I LOVE movies that can creep you out with things that cannot exist.

Saw this in the theater when it came out. I still remember it all these years later. Not so much the details, but rather how it scared me.

Watched this when I was about 11 or 12 and it's stayed with me the rest of my life - re-watched it a couple of months ago and it still gave me chills (and I'm not easily spooked) - a must watch for late at night.

Love this film, saw it very young and it became a favorite rewatch- such stunning sound design- and the most chilling wheelchair in cinema.

Peter Medak is so good! This director has had such a varied career, I think it's kept him under the radar.

Apparently when Medak read the script in bed one morning he was so scared he couldn't move. I think this is the greatest haunting movie ever. Supposedly based on a true story.

We still laugh about the story my father told us about going to see this movie with my brother. My brother was accompanying my father on a job in a small town where they had to stay over night. At night there was nothing to do and so they went to see this movie. They were the only two people in the theatre!! As my father says,"it scared the hell out of us." Two grown men slept with the light on that night! Lmao...

And George C. Scott is terrific and gives it emotional weight. Medak's direction is outstanding though the script is overly convoluted. See also The Innocents (1961) and The Haunting (1963) classic haunted house films.

Writer and movie director Ti West is right, the movie "The Changeling" is one of best classic horror movies, and also Ti West's movie " The Innkeepers is also one of best horror movie in last decades, without overdose pointless of jumps scenes...well written, excellent work of the camera, director, good acting, interesting characters, good music, and so on and so on... It's really good movie...

I saw this in the theater back in '79 and thought it was genuinely creepy. Too bad the trailer gives away too many of the scary bits . . .

i just re-watched that today. it really good i love that house. lol kinda reminds me of the house from your film "house of the devil" that one from 2007. that film is a blast man. really is. .... anyway the only problem for me which is not a fault is that i can't even have a glass of wine when i watch scott walk around that huge house without kinda dosing off because i always try to watch it after i work or something. i watched it totally awake and sober today and i feel i just watched a total gem i missed from that time period of film. but your rite alot of .. even actors i talk to have not seen "the changeling".

Once upon a time they made adult scary adults with plausible adult characters. I remember seeing this on HBO a very long time ago and being totally creeped out by it. Isn't there a moment when an old wheelchair unfolds itself and begins chasing George C. Scott? It's been a while since I've it. The Changeling is a sadly neglected horror movie from an era when the genre had a degree of seriousness before devolving into silly slasher trash. The 80's saw a brief revival of good horror films like The Howling, The Thing, Scanners, and An American Werewolf In London but the slasher flicks were easier to make and made tons of money so profit wins out over imagination.
