Be weary of the customer service, lego fans know how important customer service is because lego is 2nd to none. Bambu labs is the opposite and some of the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I placed an order for a printer back in September when bricksie first did his sponsor video. I still have not gotten my order . Bambu labs has no customer support phone number here in Canada and you have to do everything via email. You’re lucky to get 1 response a week and if you do they send you a generic “sorry for the inconvenience and we are investigating” message and it’s always in the middle of the night. The product itself seems great but the customer service is just awful. Something to consider before purchasing because you will need tech support, replacement parts, and filament over the course of owning the printer.

This is great, Tiago. Kudos for sharing your 3D print files for free. For those of us not able to 3D print just yet, I've found the IKEA Malaren Boxes fit almost perfectly inside the Alex drawers, albeit with a few cms/inches of space at the back of the drawer. They cost about $11AUD each, and one set fits one drawer. I then use plastic drawer dividers from DAISO to further divide the Malaren boxes, which works pretty well. Happy building!

Having recently bought an A1 after using an Ender 3 for several years, the ease and quality of life improvements with the A1 really is astounding. My 2019 Slave 1 has been sitting on a 3d printed stand for about 4 years now with zero issues. My DeLorean is on a printed stand too. Couldn't recommend the A1 more!

This is brilliant! Years ago I bought some Alex drawers because I saw them in your videos. When I ran into the same problems, I did something similar, I used a laser cutter to cut organizers that perfectly fit into the drawers. I haven't run the numbers, but my guess is your 3D-printing approach is probably a little more expensive but much easier and less time-consuming.

I have a similar set of Ikea drawers used for art supplies that annoyingly don’t pull out all the way. I will now be measuring and printing inserts for them. It’s coming up to 12 months since I became the owner of an A1 3d printer. I can vouch for the reliability and ease of use of your sponsor’s products. You can dismount the screws from the side of the drawers that fix them to the rails, allowing you to open the drawer to an extended position.

Just thought of something - to make it easier to pull a container out of the drawer, it might be helpful to add a lip or flange to the inside of the container, probably just 1-2 sides… I have some similar containers meant for hardware stuff, and the ones with the lip/flange are the easiest to pull out of their bigger storage bin.

The one thing I like that from Akro-Mills drawers that you don't have is ease of view. Most of the time, I can glance at a drawer and see what's inside immediately due to the clear drawers. Your collection does look bigger than mine, however, so I respect that you would need a larger scale set up.

Love that they reached out to you to help solve the dilemma of optimally storing Alex drawers! I've struggled with it myself and I agree that it felt like a futile endeavor, but I also found a solution ;) At Target stores in the US, they have storage tray system called Brightroom that actually fits these perfectly! They even have a long version that you can reach the back and you can still see the contents (in both narrow and wide). It's honestly amazing how perfectly they fit. And this may feel like a nitpck (and I apologize in advance), but I would call this "storage" rather than "sorting" as it assumes pieces are already sorted. Though it's quite common to find videos calling this sorting regardless of which step of Lego organizating it falls under. The unfortunate thing is that there are truly so few videos out there that tackle Lego sorting - especially optimally - that it's still often just assumed you've already done the hard part. (Maybe another video topic for you? ;) Still a wonderful video and just love that you finally found a solution as I know what a struggle it can be. And btw, it was fun to actually meet you for a quick second in Billund in September right before Skaerbaek (at the Gastropub on your last night) Cheers! ;)

This looks like an excellent system for the bigger LEGO parts. As for smaller parts, like studs and 1x1 size elements, my fat fingers have a hard time picking those out of small bins with narrow walls relative to depth. In using your system, I might consider a stackable shallow tray insert with internal sub-dividers for the little elements. These could be double stacked in your bins to maximize drawer space. Alternatively, long narrow bins might work, so I could use my thumb-index finger pincer grasp fully extended for a long sweep and pick! Overall, your best storage system yet!

I solved this years ago using a very low tech and cheaper solution. I got the $30 craft carts from Michael's and cut card stock paper to make boxes that were the perfect height. in any size I wanted. The sides of the drawers of the craft cart have an angle, which I was able to accommodate by stapling the card stock boxes imperfectly at an angle.

You could also unscrew the 2 screws that hold the drawer to the metal rails and this would let you slide them all the way out and the rails are tight enough to keep the drawer from falling down.

I use the same Ikea Alex drawers The best solution I found was from Target ! They sell storage containers Cheaper than what it cost to 3d print I already did the math They are called Brightroom containers They come in various sizes Sold in 4 pack for the small square 3 pack for medium rectangular 3 pack long trays 2 pack large tray Every pack is $2 each This fit perfect ! Into the IKEA Alex drawers The best part is because of the design it’s easy to scoop parts out vs a square There is no lost space if you Tetris right I use the big trays at the back so I can still see what’s back there and they are easy to pull They come in 3 colors I haven’t found anything else that comes close

First of all, great project. That said, there are a lot of things that come to my mind as I watch this. For one, I think you missed out on an obvious accessibility feature. By removing a single finger-sized gaps at approximately the 33% position along every axes of the bigger containers, you would have made it way easier to grab those out given how snug you've left the system. Similarly, I think there would have been value in including a tiny little airhole pattern at the bottom of the boxes, since I get the feeling that your current design may cause those to produce a vacuum making it harder to get the bottom ones out. The narrowest/smallest units seem like they might tip over easily, which is a problem since they'll probably contain the tiniest little things imaginable. I get that translucent isn't an option for the filament, but a more neutral white color would make it easier to see the tints of the bricks inside when a container is nearly empty. Dark containers suck up a lot of light! So I would probably have made all of them the same color, but made the 'extra space' boxes recognizable by putting in a tiny little profile on the width end for the sake of easy orientation if you end up taking them out while cleaning and need to put them back afterwards. Finally, I don't know how you have your drawers organized and how much you know based on position alone what's inside, but since you have a lot of them, I would really worry about proper labeling. Those mostly-empty cups seem like they'll take a lot of effort to identify the contents with, either by leaning over so you can look in or by picking the cup out so you can tilt it over.

Those are valid concerns. Let me add one: I'd like the bottom edge of the cups to be curved, not straight. That way it's easier to fish out tiny parts that otherwise would be stuck in the corners.

After my initial few days of "How much usefull/useless stuff I can print", my first test print for lego sorting bins is running right now. The A1 mini is an absolute delight. Thank you very much for sharing your design on makersworld. While I can't use it because I have other bins, I find it superwell designed and really useful. Just one note that you actually need the A1, not the mini to print the larger bins.

My first print of the big container is running now, but 2 corners have let go of the heating plate (due to cooling down and therefore curving the plastic?) Did you encounter this as well? (and if yes, how did you fix it?)

Do you wash your heating plates with water and soap every few prints? One of the more common issues of prints letting go. Also avoid getting your fingers on area where the print is coming.

While I agree that 3D Printing is definately the best solution for this problem, I wouldn't personally feel comfortable with using Bambu Lab as it does a disservice to the open source nature of the 3D printing community that allowed desktop 3D printers to be a thing. 110% drawer sliders will solve the drawer problem easily and they aren't that expensive. Apart from that I would recommend looking at gridfinity, which is arguably one of the best well thought through box system for 3d printing. It was based upon alexanders system, but open source and the community really took hold with ideas. Yes you will still have the side area waste issue, but that will be limited to a maximum of 40mm, which is mostly acceptable. This system is very specific for one type of drawer, gridfinity is pretty much universal.

Gridfinity will make it very hard to reach the end of the drawers. Also, never been able to find drawer sliders that fit the IKEA cabinets, and believe me, I looked!

In that regard your system is also not "perfect". as you have to do two steps for the back stuff. But you could easily make a gridfinity masterbox like you have now. Second. For any system to be perfect, you have to essentially design every component yourself, including the cabinet and drawers. There is probably no commonly sold cabinet out there that will fit your exact requirements. You will always be left with odd size boxes like you have now. But again. You made your personal situation much better, for which you should always receive commendations. My modest 20-25 kg lego collection is currently sorted in IKEA Samla boxes, for which I have printed subboxes. For the 1x1 and technics stuff I have some of those small lidded boxes. But I don't have to sort by color, I can easily find the color of a certain item in a mixed box of common elements like the 2x4. To each their own I guess.

YUP YUP YUP! I just knew from the thumbnail lol. I got into 3d printing at the beginning of this year cause my parents got me the ender v3 se. Then in the 2nd half of the year I started collecting Lego sets again and now I visit my local PAB wall pretty often to build my parts collection. With all that I had one of these exact same shelves that I cleaned out and I'm currently in the process of printing out all my different containers. But i never took measurements for the Lego pieces, so I didn't feel confident continuing to the bottom 3 shelves. Also i love the Idea of it being modular. I wanted to try that exact idea with a giant box which would have smaller boxes of varying sizes, so thank you for saving me time! I would not have been able to complete this in my own time. Gonna download the STL files soon! I plan on getting my dad, who originally wanted to get a 3d printer, the Bambu lab A1 with the ams lite. Its on sale for black Friday right now, but I plan on getting it in 2 weeks. So maybe once that's ordered and arrived I'll try out the same containers with the Bambu A1.

Wow, that's really fantastic. I bought a Bambu A1 especially for this and will be printing these boxes over the next few months. I have a request: could you make a lid for the large box? Then the boxes can be stored outside of the cupboard.
