So Throes of Chaos is basically a spell that doesn't technically even do anything.... That is so bizarre. Like, "I cast Throes of Chaos. It has Cascade, so that triggers." Ok, so what does it actually do? "Oh, nothing. There is no text. It just... goes away. Until I retrace it."

Well, its Chaos - if you use it in a more "diverse" deck, then you get effect of random card (that cost less) from you deck. And now you lands are also "chaotic", every land is potentialy random 0-3 cost card. But yeah, if you finetune your deck... Its became really not so chaotic. Maybe if you have a perfect monopoly of Chaos - it could be a perfect Order.

It's one of the cards that Wizards likes to print to _specifically_ be a combo card. It's way too unreliable to be used in a fair manner which means it's only used in silly piles for silly effect or by degens from upcountry. Since casual does not exist on Arena it's the degenerate thing that Throes (and Trickery before it) will be used for. They really don't seem to understand that they are incapable of printing an explicit combo card without it being absolutely broken. In most cases because their idea of combo is always to tutor and cast stuff for free. So we end up hoping that something like Trickery is inconsistent enough that people get tired of it (which was the case until Throes) or they ban the worst part of the combo.

25:08 It did resolve. The cascade trigger just goes on the stack first (hence finding the trickery that was countered), but as far as I understand it, Throes of Chaos doesn't actually do anything when it resolves, so it looks the same as if it gets countered.

It's just a 4 mana cascade effect. It would be pretty weak if it wasn't for Trickery.

Cascade is an ability that triggers on cast (like Hydroid Krasis draw&gain). Upon casting Throes, Cascade is activated and once it resolves, Throes would resolve. It "does nothing" because it doesn't have any abilities that use the stack during resolution. It's kind of like a vanilla Sorcery.

Since Trickery came out they should have errata that card to say ‘target opponent’. They’ve been contemplating to ban it not realizing the error will “perpetually” haunt them every time a new card added that takes advantage of it id added to the format.. yes, perpetually is most likely another problem.

From my experience, it's impossible. You can get to plat and Diamond if you craft important mythics / rares, but I simply don't think there are enough opportunities to punish against diamond players to rank up to mythic with a starter deck. The disadvantage is too much. I'd love to be proven wrong though. I'd like to see a content creator / professional MTGA player's opinion on this (who probably routinely eat my mistakes for breakfast lunch and even dinner)

Mono Black Magic played something similar using mastermind's aquisition, omniscience, and mind's desire. The witch claw basically serves as an extra four trickeries. It still has the fail state of hitting one of his 8 (X) spells, but when it hits almost anything else (emergent, omniscience, mind's desire which is already stormed) it basically just wins, as early as turn 2. Absolutely nuts.

The funny thing, it's a spell that does nothing. It has Cascade, which activates before it resolves, but it does nothing when it resolves. Then you can cast it again with its other ability, but the spell itself does nothing at all.

Nothing about this is 100% apart from the Cascade. What makes this strong is the Retrace.

@@busTedOaS The only way to whiff is to hit another Trickery or to hit a Mastery with nothing in the graveyard. While it's not 100%, it's many many times better than the previous combo which could hit a lot of 0 drops as well as another Trickery in the deck. That on top of the fact you only need one card to pull it off is insanely more consistent than mulliganing to 3 cards just to have a 0 drop and a Trickery in hand.

I played one game of Historic after JHH was released and played against an infinite combo using that new card that perpetually reduces stats for a creatre (Davriel something-or-other). It just felt so pointless. I'm done with Historic now.

And even then, when these things do slip through the cracks, remove them quickly. Meddling Mage and Archon of Emeria are also ways to stop the combo and are significantly better than Drannith Magistrate bodywise, though Archon loses if you are on the draw and don't have Llanowar Elf while Meddling mage dies to Mizzix Mastery + Treasure spell.

It's a 5 card combo, Throes, and 4 lands ;) Also, I found this build interesting with the Mizzix's Mastery choice. I feel like it really weakens Tibalt though. Mastery, Outburst, and Opus are good cards, but not game winning when they are cast, like Ugin or Ulamog. Personally, I like hitting Overwhelming Splendor or Serra's Emissary, both very punishing. Or with Emergent Ultimatum, you can get Throes as a choice to spin the wheel again (with 2 other oppressive threats).

I hope all kinds of people list their Trickery in the comments. That's how we all get better. I like to run my Trickery engine with Shadowborn Apostles, Emrakul, and Rune-Scarred Demon. It's not turn 1, but it works. Mine is weak to grief, but most are.

I saw this video although I absolutely hate Trickery, you made me think and I built an obnoxious torture deck with cascading trickery, Mizzix Opus and intent/invent (trickery-able, immune to cascade and tutor) with some storm goodies on top (desire and tendrils), and now I feel really dirty... But it works marvels, went from Gold to Diamond in one day (it works until Trickery gets utterly hammered, of course)

Yeah, probably a lot of wasted matches. Ironically this version of the deck is not that good since you're just as likely to hit a useless Mizzik off your cascade as a Trickery. And then again the odds of hitting junk off your Trickery is also pretty high. Plus there's the thing where Arena really seems to LOVVVVE to put Trickery in your hand. It's almost impossible not to have one in hand, if not two, by turn three or four.

The problem ISN’T historic format, rather it is a lack of conscious understanding of how new cards will interact with legacy cards WotC has made rules changes and oracle modifications in the past. Simple fix: retrace now exiles the card after graveyard casting.

Just played my first game with this deck, got the turn 3 throes, had plenty of lands, looked great. First cascade into trickery, hit mizzix mastery, its only target is magma opus....I'm like ok, not an Ulamog or Ugin but still pretty good I can set my opponent way back (he was playing BW lifegain with soul warden, speaker of the heavens, cleric of life's bond and Sorin). Throes into trickery again...hit mizzix mastery again, only targets are tibalt's trickery and throes of chaos.....alright that sucks but an Ugin, Ulamog or Ultimatum probably still ends this. Throes again, Trickery hits Mizzix Mastery AGAIN....still no good targets. So I'm left with a 4/4 and a hand full of spells I can't play because they're meant to be cheated out while he's developed a board state. Good times...such is my luck with combo decks apparently lmao.
