The yoga that the yogis of Tibet practice (tantra) is not near extinction at all. It is very much alive and vibrant in its original home, India. For some strange reason, westerners easily gloss over and devalue the fact that it is all essentially Indian and Hindu, has always existed in India, been shared by India and still exists in India.

Although the essence of Vajrayana is tantric, its origins can also be traced to the ancient tibetan Bon tradition, which is partly shamanic. Tantric yoga was developed before the notion of hindu religious identity was established in India and its origins are more tied to the sramanas and the first buddhist asrams. Tantra, specially in the case of left-handed schools, was not only a spiritual path to liberation but also a transgressive movement, which defied the norms of caste, genre, etc. since every initiated was regarded as absolute equals. It could be said, since many practices of classical Tantra in India were lost, the Tibetans, with its more remote location, have maintained intact more aspects of the original practices than the indians, who have had much more contact with other cultures and traditions throughout history.

so many similarities in hindu and budhhist culture. after all budhha was born in royal hindu family. in Nepal so many people follow both hinduism and buddhisim same time as there is so many temples and gumbas where both people of this religion worship and believe.

Yes thank you. I get so tired of people writing off Hindus. Look up "Marpa the Translator" Tibetan Buddhist who walked to India and back 7 times 1000 years ago. To learn and translate Hindu teachings.

Buddha was born in a uppercast royal family(Brahmin) but the religion given the name "hindu"came after Buddha got enghlightened, the society back then was divided into many sections but the specification of religion only came in later years

No wrong information The word Hindu is nowhere in old books. It was Sanatan Dhammo before which is very different from the current form of Hinduism of worshipping god etc.

It is not true that the Tibetan yogis are nearing extinction. It is not possible to extinguish consciousness. What they learned is within everyone

It is said so in sutras, but personally I think it will go on and on forever ( with standard human understanding of time )

@tarashiva I agree there is too much idolatry by way of todays christainanity, however if we could all accept the fact that there is a better way this world would be a better place. We could learn from these peoples. As Jesus did. The true message is 'peace'! How or if we can attain that is a different story. Meditating or taking the needed time to think before acting or speaking is enlightenment. Can we do it? Can we let go of all the vices of this world long enough?

Strange that the word Yogi comes from India, the greatest teachers of the mind taught the Tibetans and the culture they have comes from India, yet the West portrays Buddhism and the science of the mind as solely Tibetan.

And Siddhartha Gautama was an Indian or Nepali yogi who followed ascetic yogic practices until enlightenment. Buddhism is just yoga but in many of its current forms, the teachings remain secret or lost. So, I have returned to the source. Adiyogi.

The symbols were there long before the Nazis. The Nazis took it over and made it theirs. It's a shame.
