They do love the snow and cold. In my area it just hit 50's and they are all sleeping outside. Once it get's consistently cold they often prefer sleeping outside all night.

I miss my Casey! She looked like a smaller version of this breed... She was ether a chow/mix with Rottweiler or a chow/mix with husky or maybe even a collie? It was hard for anyone to really tell but she was beautiful and smart as a whip. Protective and loving and GOD! I MISS HER SO MUCH! This breed is awesome!

If you want to hear them barking, search for "Tibetan Mastiffs barking at the fence". Chembo Chi is the loudest with deep bass that you can feel thru your body when he barks. Definately grabs your attention. Can be painful indoors because the sounds just amplifies off the walls.

At about 4:40, the dog in the middle stops and you can see how he intervenes suddenly to make sure the playing doesn't escalate. There are other clips on the internet of dogs doing that, apparently the top dog will do its best to stop any fights from starting or try to stop them when they do.

@tigertechjw11 жыл бұрын
True, the breed is protective-defensive-if you come onto their territory-they investigate/guard aggressively-which is desirable. They do not leave beyond perimeter/attack like you read some cases of pits, etc running after people. But visits by anyone, even friends to your house if you're not home, will be guarded. If kept outside, min 6ft fence is required. When introduced(each time), they calm down very quickly and go back to sleep. Walks-meeting strangers are never an issue since not at home.
@tigertechjw11 жыл бұрын
Of course there will be the occasion time if you have a dominant dog (Chembo) that may have an issue with another dominant dog-male or female, but it doesn't happen often and you just exercise caution and be proactive. Chembo loves little dogs and he is very gentle and tolerant with kids as well.

Yes...often they will sleep outside during the winter, even in a snowstorm. After all their heritage is from the Himalayan mountain area. Conversely they will not do well in heat and humidity.

They are absolutely gorgeous. I am looking forward to having one or two myself in the future. Ignore the rumors of them costing millions of dollars. That is common in Asia because they are considered dogs of royalty. However they still are somewhat expensive to buy especially as puppies but nothing overly dramatic like in the hundreds of thousands.

TM are guardian..so at home they bark aggressively & confront anything that is not normal, not birds or squirrels but other wild animals or visitors. Once introduced to visitors they calm down & go back to sleep. But even frequent guests should always be briefly introduced as they will always defend. Very loyal, dependable, good with kids but socialize with people/noise. In public they are lion-like,slow-moving and do not jump around, which is good to not alarm strangers.

My experience is that they do not overeat and sometimes will go a day or more without eating at various times...they are rather finicky. But talk with your breeder as well.
@tigertechjw11 жыл бұрын
Even in their lighter summer coat, they are not too happy in hot weather and humidity in particular is not good. Though in Tibet the native TM's do endure extremes of cold/heat but low humidity. My dogs prefer indoors during hot days and I only take them out in the evenings.
@tigertechjw11 жыл бұрын
TM's sell for around $2K-$5K in the U.S. on average, but can be higher for show quality or more desired colors-lineage. I know of some pure white Tibetan puppies that went for $15K. Though white is not necessarily a desired color in China, it is very rare outside of China and beautiful. There are other colors but Black/Tan is most common. Some breeders support direct import, but prices start around $15K and go up quickly...plus trans,handling, paperwork, breeder involvment, etc.
@tigertechjw11 жыл бұрын
They all came from a breeder. Occassionally you mayl find one at a rescue - check with the the Tibetan Mastiff Rescue.
@tigertechjw11 жыл бұрын
While TM's prices are relatively expensive in China, only a few have sold for astronomical prices. In the U.S. most between $2k-$5k and some are higher.

Also keep in mind that a TM/mastiff will typically be 2 or 3 times the size of the types you mentioned with proportional strength and determination as compared to a pit, etc. Some Mastiffs were "war" dogs in ancient history. For me, I do not like dog fighting or take enjoyment in seeing it. I have met many super friendly pits and my TM's are gentle/patient with people/kids. However, if there was an unwelcome visitor or if I was in danger, my dogs would respond quickly, it's in their nature.
