Geeat video. I’m 5 months post-surgery tibial fracture. Two plates and 11 screws. I was hit by a pick up truck while walking in a crosswalk. I don’t feel pain but do feel numbness and feel the plate on the side of my knee. I’m back to walking a few miles at the local park and back to working out at the gym. My surgeon is pleased with my progress. I went to physical therapy for 3 months and finished last week. When I was non weight bearing for two months, I admit I was worried if I’d ever walk again. My limping has really diminished as well. I’m feeling like myself again. Best wishes to everyone dealing with this type of injury.

I had a type 4 TPF 4 months ago, that type is unusual. My recovery isn't going well. I was immobilized for 7 weeks, no rom, NWB for 9 weeks. I have alot of pain(especially the back of the knee) and swelling still. My flexion is at 120(normal 148), extension 4-7,(normal -6). I'm wondering if I should have a manipulation. I'm really frustrated with my PT, they are not working on my ROM anymore, say it's too late. I was a very active person before this and want to get back to playing sports. I'm wondering if I have meniscus damage, apparently the surgeon didn't look while he was in there. How is your range of motion, did you regain it? Anything you can share that would be helpful is appreciated. Thanks

Hello, Dr. Geier. Thank you very much for this video explaining not only the actual TP fracture but also some potential outcomes in the future. 2 weeks ago, I injured myself with TP fracture and grade 1 MCL sprain on my left knee from skiing. I was not doing anything crazy, but the visibility was bad from snowing (at Mammoth, CA) and in rather heavy wet snow, I hit a crud and got myself ejected out from both skis. As I heard the pop with an immediate pain, I thought I dislocated my knee first. A long story short, I have never injured myself from skiing this bad even with years of alpine ski racing background. Now, I'm hoping to recover correctly and looking forward to the next ski seasons. Meanwhile, I am still in pain and can only dream of skiing,,,,,

Nearly 18 months down the track my knee joint is fine , I have no pain in it but the stiffness and numbness in my leg drives me insane . I do my physio exercises , plus yoga every day and walk short distances . My walking is still quite unsteady and I feel quite unbalanced. Thanks for this video - it was really interesting. I was assaulted last month with someone wrapping their leg round the front of my knee and crushing very hard - which left me with a non displaced, depressed, tibial plateau fracture. The UK hospital team were very good but I was very distressed with how it had happened with an assault. Initially from X-rays it was thought I needed urgent surgery but CT showed it had started to heal well already. To mention, straight after the injury occurred I saw a doctor in the local practice and although it was very very swollen, it was not immediately sore in any area so did not appear to be a fracture. Life lesson is keep healthy, exercise, lots of Vitamin D and no smoking - apparently that’s what has helped my fracture to stater to heal well 😃

I found with my surgery that the hospital will NOT explain what procedures are required and that “tomorrow morning “ your going downstairs to be pulled out to length and you’ll wake up with a bunch of metal on the outside of your leg. Weirdly enough there are levels to this surgery that should be explained to the patient prior to the “day after “.

I suffered a TPF (type 6) on March 1 after a relatively minor bike accident on March 1. It was excruciating (and I’ve had 3 children without pain meds!) What I didn’t know is the risk of an embolism after a leg break and that is what I had the night of my accident. I spent 18 days in the hospital (in Germany) but was PWB from day one PO. 20 kilos as tolerated up to week 6 and then adding 15 kilos per week until FWB. It helped so much with sweeping and numbness and in general am doing well at 9 weeks PO. Also had a hinged brace at 30 degrees for 2 weeks, 60 degrees for 2, 90 for 2 and then fully open. I’m wondering why some doctors, especially in the US recommend NWB for so long? Those patients seem to struggle mentally and then physically for so much longer.

The way this is dealt with in the US is a mess! I was put in a immobilizer for 6 weeks and was non weight bearing for 10. When I came out of the brace at week 6, I had 60 degrees flexion. Now my ROM has not returned and I know it's because I didn't move the knee for so long.

My knee is quite strong, but I do have arthritis. I am considering getting a steroid injection and then the gel injected. The pain and swelling get pretty bothersome.
