I am in no way a musical person..in fact, I despise them. I swear, when I watched the teaser for Tick Tick..Boom, I replayed “Bo bo bobo bo..” a thousand times and since watching the movie 3 times now…30/90 has its own playlist and I bawled my eyes out at the ending. I even went on KZbin to watch the video of Rent with its original/premiere cast, the one where they had no set designs, just raw emotion on stage and watch Larson play 30/90 is just heartbreaking. You can see the passion for the craft exuding and for him to die so tragically. I hope the doctor that misdiagnosed his condition, as “just the flu” was/is forever haunted by Jonathan Larson

This is *such* a good performance, and such a fantastic way to work this song into the flashback world of the movie/story as a way to establish the infamous apartment and key cast. Lin-Manuel directs the hell out of this with enveloping long takes, perfect cutaways and an incredibly palpable energy that transmits across screens. And this isn't even THE best (or 2nd best scene) in this excellent film.

@Worlds of Wonder It's all subjective but "Sunday", "Come to your Senses" and the finale are all colossal juggernauts of performance, great directing, piles of emotion (and the cameos!!). There's also the breakthrough sequence in 'Swimming' or Robin's performance in "Real Life", the incredibly deep personal look a Jon taking stock in "why"..? Hard to pick one.

In terms of directing decisions, I thought the Therapy scene was very creative and a bold decision, using the song during the argument. I really liked that coming from Lin Manuel Miranda's first film, stuff like that orthe Play Game part really give me hope for his future works. He could be doing very creative fun stuff in the future.
@ethanspiro5136
@ethanspiro5136 2 жыл бұрын
@@neoshenlong I think what you liked about "Therapy" is what I love about the over arching, big choice that Miranda makes with the film. He unquestionably decided to create a new, fully realized and hybrid world; half deeply grounded in reality and half floating around the surreal imagination within Jon's head, by marrying and merging the two existing ideas of what tick..tick..BOOM was; firstly - as the rock monologue Larsen only ever knew it as...but blended with the more performed, narrative David Aubrun off broadway production that Miranda saw as a college student but showing all of that world, in a way that only the medium of film can...with the deepest understanding that this story is most interesting when the barrier between these two worlds is porous and permeable. Lin-Manuel has such a deep understanding of this subject material that he knows exactly when to slip between them, and where and when to blend them together deftly where our experience as audience members is never derailed or disrupted. It shows very mature understanding of storytelling structure and pace, symbolism and subtext. I think it's incredibly promising for "the next one" so to speak, from Lin-Manuel Miranda.

I would not have thought of Garfield if casting this movie myself, but seeing it proves he is PERFECT as Jonathan Larson. From the look to the mannerisms to the essence, it really connects seamlessly with every video I've ever seen of Larson (mostly in connection to Rent). Plus, he has a good voice - especially for having never sung before!

What amazes me is that Andrew apparently really didn’t know how to sing. He needed a year and a half of voice classes. It’s amazing. EDIT, 2/7/22: So just before this song, there’s a guy who says he sang madrigals in high school, right? And it was weird in the scene. But now that Disney’s “Encanto” is super popular-LMM connected that movie to this one with that one reference. But we didn’t necessarily know that if we hadn’t watched “Encanto” in theaters, before this movie was released on Netflix.

His astounding singing abilities aside, his body language is impressive, too. He's just so expressive, his movements flow with such ease. I don't know, but that is something that always captivates me about his performances. I watched him in Angels in America (the NTLive recording, unfortunately, not the live play) and every single gesture he does conveys so much emotion...
