I was slightly jarred at the differences between the stage show at first, but this was done so beautifully. I think a large part of your question is that the musical itself simply isn't as well known as Hamilton or Rent and will have to rely on word of mouth which, of course, takes time.

Lin chose to film this song this way because he said he wants to show that as a songwriter and someone performs his songs, the world would see the performer on the stage but what he would see is the person/environment that inspired him to write the lyrics. He literally just brought us to the mind of brilliant writers like him

Interesting. I just figure he did it that way because he pretty much had to, given that unlike the stage show, they are using two actors, as opposed to having Vanessa & Alexandra's characters played by the same actress (which is what the stage version does).

“You don’t need a music box melody to know what I mean” almost made me cry the first time I heard it. I totally relate, I grew up always loving the arts especially dance but my family never was into it much at all. so once I got a car I finally started taking dance classes and kind of got into different community dance teams, performances and shows. It was so exciting I loved it so much but those 5 years it was very difficult always felt like I was choosing my dance teams over family... it just really tore me apart inside. I was ambitious purely dancing for the joy, highs and focus it gave me, but it was wierd when my family members who haven't seen me for 3 months just disapproved my absence. It took me awhile but I think I know how to express the artist in me and balance the relationships that are most dearest to me or rather how to not over guilt myself or how to communicate to them better.

Alexandra Shipp AMAZED me in this movie and especially this song. This was truly one of her best roles, and I didn't know she was such a vocal champion- able to do a toe-to-toe duet with Vanessa (known for her stellar singing) and power through with such raw emotions and crisp belts. If the rent film was made in 2021, I could see her playing Mimi the same way Rosario Dawson did, especially singing-wise. Truly took my breath away @ 2:03 just- GOOSEBUMPS.

I think that’s the point. I think that Lin wanted to find someone who could play Mimi and have her be Susan instead. Throughout all of this movie, you can see the different connections between RENT and Jon’s world. You can see how he could’ve made a character like Mimi based on Susan, for instance. You can see why Angel gives Collins a coat. You can see why Mimi was suddenly sick with a fever by the end of the show. Then again: In the first Broadway production of “tick, tick…BOOM!” the first Susan was played by someone who was Maureen in one of Jon’s RENT workshops, if I remember right. So it depends on the production and which way they want to go with the character.

When you mention that, I don’t think you should compare a musical like In The Heights with Tick Tick Boom when they have totally different genres and plot. Despite that, you have to consider how different the marketing strategies of ITH and TTB were as well. In terms of plot, ITH is a celebration and love for community and home. TTB tackles with themes and issues that are heavy, personal and intimate. I believe they’re both great in their own right. Why else would Lin place his trust on someone else to direct ITH.

“Defenses are not the way to go, and you know… or at least you knew.” This chorus is SO beautifully crafted. I know in the film we see Jonathan lose so much because he’s blinded by his obsession to create something he feels will give him the recognition he deserves… and while he does, he pushes away his love and his friends. Andrew sells it so beautifully. Everything about this song is amazing. The fact that you can tell Jonathan Larson wrote it for Superbia due to lines about the screens, yet it fits SO WELL in the modern era, the musical was way ahead of its time. But you can also tell that he took so much personal experience from it just from what we see in tick tick boom… its easy to write a song about your own frustrations in a relationship, but it is a monumental task to write one about your own shortcomings, and one that is from the others perspective at that. The fact that Lin directed this so well, having Susan sing with Karessa because he KNEW how personal that song was for Jonathan. Having him be transported to the rooftop where they talked, and him knowing that this is what she wanted so badly for him to understand. It’s beautiful… it just makes me so sad knowing that Jonathan never got to see his dreams pay off. He’s truly a wonderfully creative human being who deserved so much more than what he was given.

No one has brought up how the notes on the phrase “Come to Your Senses” and the tune of “Will I?” Are basically the same. It’s very apparent in this version (especially towards the end). It’s showing that RENT (Larson’s breakthrough piece) was always beating in his heart.

This was an absolute showstopper. I’m not familiar with the original musical, so wasn’t expecting the song but it feels like it just comes out of nowhere. I loved the way in the swimming scene he’s getting little glimpses of this song coming to him and then at this moment it’s like it strikes him who the song was about without even realising it, the work Lin Manuel does to show that realisation was really well done and Andrew’s reactions are so true and honest, he really sells the realisation and the fact he now can’t throw the thought of it being Susan You can tell that his song is breaking his own heart now he’s hearing it back, it’s like now he’s hearing his own music coming back to him he’s now seeing her perspective

This is a very good film with a very deep message about love and friendship. But we have to admit that Jonathan Larson is unique although his works are brilliant. And not all people like his uniqueness. I feel so grateful that I have the chance to know Jonathan's work and able to see Lin's work in In the heights, Hamilton and this one. I am a big fan of Jonathan Larson and Lin Manuel Miranda.

The most brilliant thing about this scene is how it perfectly visualizes what was already implied in the stage show. In the stage show, Susan and Karessa are played by the same actress, so the audience is able to interpret the song as being sung by either character. This scene takes that idea and runs with it 100% and shows us what Jon is seeing versus everyone else. I love it!

Just brilliant. I would have liked to have seen Vanessa singing more of the main verse but it's not a complaint. Alexandra is stunning (as is Vanessa). Vanessa has gotten more beautiful as she's gotten older and her voice has more substance now. The look that she's sporting in this song suits her perfectly. Without a ponytail and subtle, understated makeup, she looks better than ever.

I love this film so much, but this particular scene is so good. Simple but incredibly effective. As Jonathan hears his song, essentially for the first time, two things happen which are both important, and brought to life perfectly by both actresses. 1) Jonathan is healed and processes his situation with Susan. The song is written essentially for her to sing as a therapy to him. When he's alone on the rooftop with her, that's what's happening. Emotionally, he is finally maturing and gaining the perspective he needed, because he's given someone else the words to say to him. 2) Karessa saves the show. As she sings, at first it's quite reserved but technically solidly performed. We cut to others in the room (not Jonathan - he's not there any more) and get a hint of them all going "Oh ok, this is it" as they realise this is something special. Finally, as the two actresses sing together at the end of the song, both 'versions' combine. The performance of the song in the room is allowed to breathe and relax and, in doing so, begin to convey the emotion that Jonathan is feeling from Susan to the whole room. Basically, both 'sides' of the song are individually great, but it's when they come together that both of these 'arcs' are able to complete, because they compliment each other so well. gah. oscars all round.
