For those that don't know - the woman in the teal scarf at 1:04 is Julie Larson (the real Jon Larson's sister), who produced the movie and was heavily involved. She praised Andrew Garfield's performance, and even said that watching him perform at times felt like she was seeing her brother again.

This ending had no right to hit this hard, this whole movie had no right to hit this hard Jonathan Larson's story isn't just his, it's everyone's. It's an inspiration to all those who are struggling, feeling worthless, burdened, afraid of running out of time, its an inspiration for them to keep at it because sooner or later you will make it, we are all surrounded by despair, by fear but we can still choose to be driven by love, love for our work, love for our friends and family and most importantly, love for ourselves. This one scene is just so well done, he doesn't have the success he's dreamed of, he does not have a second chance of bringing back the love of his life whom he himself drove away, his best friend is sick and has difficulty expressing his identity, many of his friends have died, he's 30 and time is running out for him but he still chooses to be driven by love, to do what he loves and its beautiful and what's better he's supported by the people he loves, people who have helped him hone his craft, his inspirations, his mentor, all of them and that final tune of Happy Birthday is so weirdly triumphant, it just works.

3:14 is the part that made me cry. The whole bridge was composed so perfectly and portrayed perfectly. The message is so moving and the emotional tears shown by Michael is so heart touching because it really reflected how proudly he felt that Jonathan achieved his goal. Andrew portrayed Jonathan so perfectly and did an extra 100% percent by adding his singing and piano talents. Andrew should win or at least be nominated for an oscar. @@rossbooth4635 yes, this is the original 1996 cast. The 2005 movie features almost all of them, only two of the main gang were recast due to various reasons (Mimi and Joanne), the rest are state actors first and movie/TV - later. Almost all of these people jumpstarted their careers because of RENT. The fact that Larson didn't live like 15 more hours to see at least once the thing he created that literally changed the world makes my heart bleed every time I think about it.

Why do we play with fire? Why do we run our finger through the flame? Why do we leave our hand on the stove- Although we know we're in for some pain? Oh, why do we refuse to hang a light When the streets are dangerous? Why does it take an accident Before the truth gets through to us? Cages or wings? Which do you prefer? Ask the birds. Fear or love, baby? Don't say the answer Actions speak louder than words. Why should we try to be our best When we can just get by and still gain? Why do we nod our heads Although we know The boss is wrong as rain? Why should we blaze a trail When the well worn path seems safe and So inviting? How-as we travel, can we See the dismay- And keep from fighting? Cages or wings Cages or wings Which do you prefer? Ask the birds Fear or love, baby? Don't say the answer Actions speak louder than words Louder than, louder than What does it take To wake up a generation? How can you make someone Take off and fly? If we don't wake up And shake up the nation We'll eat the dust of the world Wondering why Why Why do we stay with lovers Who we know, down deep Just aren't right? Why would we rather Put ourselves through hell Than sleep alone at night? Why do we follow leaders who never lead? Why does it take catastrophe to start a revolution? If we're so free, tell me why? Someone tell me why So many people bleed? Cages or wings? Cages or wings? Which do you prefer? Ask the birds. Fear or love, baby? Don't say the answer. Actions speak louder than Louder than, louder than Louder than, louder than Cages or wings? Which do you prefer? Ask the birds Fear or love baby? This song is so beautiful 😭 It's like he's asking "cages or wings which do you prefer?" And the logical answer might seem simple like who would prefer cages right? But the examples he gives throughout the song, "why do we refuse to hang the lights when the streets are dangerous?" "Why should we try to be our best? When we can just get by and still gain?" It seems like we always choose suffering that's why he says "actions speak louder than words" and i love the lyric "why does it take catastrophe to start a revolution?" Like why do we wait things to burn down and why don't we take the action before something horrible happens? And the whole "fear or love" thing 😭 it's like if we fear then we would do the logical things like we won't try to be our best cause we can just get by and gain but we don't do that, we choose love and thus our actions are not logical. Humans are driven by love not by fear.

When Andrew Garfield sung the lyrics, "so many people bleed" he put his ENTIRE soul, body, mind, voice, and just his absolute everything into it. This will forever be my favorite Andrew Garfield movie because Andrew Garfield was just so f-ing amazing in it. He put his everything into this movie and that's why It turned out so great. Also, great job to everyone else because this movie was just so amazing and everyone put their absolute ALL into this masterpiece. The ENTIRE team was just so incredible and really worked HARD to make this movie the best it could be. And they accomplished just that. So really what I'm trying to say is thank you for allowing us to rest our eyes on this treasure and thank you for sharing Jonathan Larson's story. And thanks to Jonathan for getting up everyday and still writing even when you were told not to because people didn't believe in you. Thank you for creating beautiful pieces of artwork for people to hear and see.

That's a very touching and sad movie. I feel like Lin captured a beautiful moment in Jonathan's life: the one where he doggedly, obsessively chased his dreams. And we've all gone through this when we become adults. Sometimes life changes our course, but we've already had a time when we struggled so hard for our dreams that we felt unstoppable.

im not a theater kid and growing up not knowing this kind of magic can happen in a room performed by several people. but damn i wish i was because of this movie. not only andrew aced this but the entire cast and crew did such great job capturing everything and trying to tell the story as truthfully as possible. andrew gave his all to this project, lin really knew the materials he was given, and the cast!!! i cannot tell you how much i want the superbia songs to have official recording and being released because i couldn't get enough of it!! i will surely be jamming to the album for at least the next month (i didn't stop listening to hamilton for about 3 months straight, and in the heights for like 2 months, so yes)

I don’t know if anyone who worked on this movie will ever see this, but I just want the creators to know how much their work here means to me. I can’t think of another movie in the past ten years or more that has affected me so deeply. I’m a 28-year-old disabled writer, and I connect to Jonathan Larson's story on a visceral level. The desire to create regularly takes precedence over other things in my life, as does the notion that I may be running out of time. I especially love that moment in the Therapy scene when Jonathan starts writing a song in his head, right in the middle of trying to make up with Susan. It’s such a poignant moment that speaks to the obsessive nature of artists everywhere. Also, because I have a progressive disability, I've lost friends in my community too soon, and I worry every time one ends up in a hospital. Seeing Jonathan lose friends during the AIDS epidemic hit me on another note. This movie is absolutely beautiful from start to finish, and it continually provides me with hope, empathy, and a reflection of my own story every time I watch it. And of course, I listen to the soundtrack religiously. Thank you to the entire cast and crew for putting this out in the world, and thank you Jonathan Larson for your spirit and artistic ingenuity.
