It’s insane at how Tick, Tick… Boom works on many different levels It works as a biography because Jonathan Larson himself wrote this musical and they have many footages of his performances. They have easy access to Jonathan Larson’s brain It also works as an adaptation because it was directed by someone who fiercely admired Jonathan Larson and someone who knew the flaws of the original and someone who also performed in the stage version, and someone who can relate to Jonathan’s theme of “running out of time” It also works as a movie because it knew that it was a musical by/for theatre nerds. It knows how to suspend your disbelief and make a delight for the eyes. Tick, tick… Boom is a gold standard of musical adaptations

As a lifelong theatre devotee and aspiring actress/musician, I fell head over heels in love with this movie from the start and looked forward to watching this video as a way to remember why it is I do what I do: to tell stories that impact the world with people as wonderful as this cast and crew. What I didn't expect while sitting alone and slightly hopeless in my college dorm, eating half-burnt microwave popcorn in front of my laptop, was to hear "and it's hopeful because, maybe, so is yours". Weird as I know it sounds, I'm already relating to 30/90 at 19 (the world's systems keep getting more screwed up, are any of us as special as we want to believe, I can only be Cosette and Christine for so much longer, etcetera), and the idea of genuine hope-especially at this time in the world-is a difficult thing to hold on to. The moment I heard those words, though, and the moment I first saw this movie with my best friend over winter break, and the moment I watched the cast party around the piano for the first time and smiled at the anecdote that Vanessa and Andrew both claimed Mary as their first role, matching mine, and when Andrew said a few things in interviews that aligned exactly with what I'd thought about humanity and art my whole life-this is what gives me that so deeply sought-after hope. To believe in oneself, to believe in others, to be driven by your passion while still trying to be aware of your impacts-life is such a balancing act, and the reminders that came in the form of this movie and all surrounding it are so wholly needed in my life right now. Sometimes, when I sit in a practice room on the fourth floor of my school's fine arts center, playing Louder Than Words on one of the almost charmingly out-of-tune pianos, I wonder, silly as it sounds, whether Larson might be up there watching me. Up there with Sondheim, and up there with my grandmother, who showed me tapes of shows she once directed and sang along to them with me when I was still forming my love for theatre. Connections, legacy, and all that jazz-yet, it's the simplest thing in the world, to get through the mess and hold onto each other and continue allowing yourself to create. It's nothing short of everything. (Also, the day the cut footage of Green Green Dress is released is the day the world might finally know peace. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.)
