I was wondering why they didn’t portray it like this and I think they wanted to contrast the argument Andrew Garfield’s character and his girlfriend that was happening simultaneously during this song. They wanted the song to sound sillier and match the instrumental because at the end of the day arguments like that is silly. Hence why the lyrics and instrumental is fun like that.

The beauty of film is that you can get two contrasting performances and emotions with Jon and Susan fighting and cutting to Jon and his backup singer performing the song in the satirical over the top performances they give. Meanwhile, Theatre is more in the moment and the actual song is a fight between Jon and Susan in real time. Both wonderful renditions in two very different mediums.

There is no better person (other than Jonathan Larsen himself but we have been deprived of his presence) to tell this story. I feel like he is channeling Jonathan himself. This is amazing, personally I liked the version in the movie. The passive aggressiveness, the irony and the condescending tones in Andrew and Vanessa’s acting really sold it, a lot less loud and in your face but super effective.
