A little update on why missiles weren't used to intercept the Harpoons: the track radar for the grumbles is not suitable for tracking sea-skimming targets, and the fire control radar for the twin Osa-M Gecko launchers (located on the rear port and bow sides of the ship) did not have the turn radius to track the Harpoons (I think).

I can already imagine it: all the effort in the past half-century to develop ever more powerful anti-ship missiles, but the maturity of interception weapons leads to most naval engagements devolving into ship-to-ship gunnery duels.

In retrospect, I think at this point countries are going for more and faster missiles as opposed to a few huge and powerful missiles like those on the Moskva.

@@Frivolous23 Makes sense, and sheer kinetic impacts can be just as devastating as warheads. The other side of that sword, however, is guidance systems being able to compensate for all that speed, especially in the case of hypersonics, resulting in the same problems you get with atmospheric reentry, and the counter to that is to simply be somewhere else when the missile is forced to slow down, or intercept it as it slows down to locate a target.

@@thirstysailor579 Yeah, but that window is short, which means that a ship must identify, track, lock, fire, and guide one or more interceptors to a still fast-moving target all in the span of 30-60 seconds, which is a challenge but not impossible.

The AI that controls the Moskva’s gun is not very capable, unfortunately. It fires at the gun’s maximum range greatly reducing accuracy.

No contest as Kirovs can only track and shoot at 6 targets at once……the ticos will defend with sm2…….and then roll the rack with harpoons and all remaining sm2. Peter the overrated and outdated will be overwhelmed and smashed

In DCS I think the tico would have a very difficult time defending against 40 supersonic ASMs. If it didn’t die from them, it only has 8 harpoons onboard which would all certainly be intercepted. Then it boils down to gun range, and from there (assuming the ships are coming head-on the tico would have free range to shoot since the Pytor Veliky’s guns are on the stern of the ship. If they were allowed to maneuver the tico would definitely lose, unfortunately.

@frivolous23…..so doing the math off of Wikipedia, the Peter the outdated Carries 20 shipwrecks, and 96 s300’s. Each Tico Carries 8 harpoons, and a 122 cell Vls. Let’s say 20 sm2 are launched with a 66% hit rate, that leaves 6 to be ciws…….easily doable!!!!! Now that leaves 100 sm2, that can be retasked to sea ops, and 8 harpoons…. 108 missles out with only 96 to defend….oh yea have I mentioned the outdated targeting which can only engage 6 at a time. Let’s be reminded as Peter the outdated, was designed to hunt Nimitz, Ticonderoga was designed to hunt Peter……oh yea constantly being upgraded! Isn’t Peters sister ship being upgraded since like 1987……bottom line our aegis system will prevail. Truly the thing about these sims I hate the most…… these Kirovs being treated like they can take a hit like an Iowa class battleship……the thing is only 24000 tons, not 63000 tons….. a couple of harpoons and this Russian crap will be down like the Bismarck.

DCS simulates things in their optimal condition using public data, so what you see is what the Moskva would have been capable of on paper.

The Moskva should have won but the AI for the ship isn't very good. It couldn’t use it's missiles to intercept the incoming Harpoons (because of the way the ship was facing, I think) and the AI that controls the guns is sub-par.
