A lot of people have a story about Coach Bryant. Mine probably isn't much different. In 1981, I was a 10 year old kid from Graceville, Fl, about 2 miles South of the Alabama line. I was out in front of Graceville High School by myself (I think I was waiting for a ride hime) and this limo pulled up. Out stepped this big old guy with that shuffling walk he patented. He was there to recruit Neil Anderson who went on to be a great RB at Florida. Coach Bryant stopped and took a couple of minutes to talk with me and ask me about myself. From that day forward, there was no other team I was ever going to be a fan of.

He looked at you and remembered that every person was worth a word or two. You are my age and that makes good sense. Those are moments that truly define a human being. Not winning football games. He was something great. Because of how he dealt with the common everyday person. He was the real deal. And I am an Ole Miss guy. I remember his last game in Memphis. Parents went to the game because we were in a suburb of Memphis. They came home in those “painters caps” which were popular at the time. They all said “Bear’s last game”.

Didn’t Saban put the tower back up as a gesture of respect and remembrance of the Bear?

Let's set the record straight about Bryant-coached Alabama vs. Notre Dame and USC. 1970-USC 42, Alabama 21. 1971-Alabama 17, USC 10. 1977-Alabama 21, USC 20. 1978-USC 24, Alabama 14. 1973 Sugar Bowl-Notre Dame 24, Alabama 23.1975 Orange Bowl- Notre Dame 13, Alabama 11. 1976-Notre Dame 21, Alabama 18. 1980-Notre Dame 7, Alabama 0. The losses to Notre Dame were close, hard-fought games that any true football fan can still appreciate because you have 2 great, well coached teams playing as hard as they can and leaving it all on the field. The games played in the 70s by Alabama and USC are great games but the only 2 you ever see are aired once in a while on ESPN Classic. Those are the 1977 and 1978 games.
