Who would not want to run through a wall for Coach Bryant ?

I was born and raised in Los Angeles. Growing up on the west coast, you’d seldom ever hear about the south (Alabama, in particular) in good terms. It was almost always bad. But as I grew up, I realized that there was more to this country of ours (and its people) than the small-minded, preconceived notions we all have about one another. I’ve never rooted for Alabama football, but what this man (Paul William ‘Bear’ Bryant) means to me, far exceeds anything related to just football. I’m glad to have gotten to know about him, about Alabama, about the South, and about our country. Good, bad, or indifferent. My sincere regards to anyone and everyone who understands or has, in someway or another, been impacted by this man’s legacy.

Thanks for that, from the other LA - Lower Alabama. If you haven't read it, check out Rick Bragg's essay for ESPN, "Down Here," which explains many of the things you noticed as an observer from out there. And yeah, if you've ever driven cross-country, as I have many times, there's one thing you learn quickly not only about America, but about humanity in general: most people are like most other people, and most people simply want good things in life, for themselves and others as well. We really need to turn off the TV and put our phone down sometime and be reminded of that.

From " LA" myself ... Thank you it's about all we have here as far as sports. No pro teams etc... but these leaders like bear teach us way more about winning in life than he could ever teach us about winning in ball although it's the same principals.. rest in peace coach

I was fortunate enough to attend the University of Alabama while Bear was the coach. He was larger than life to me. I met him briefly after I graduated and felt so nervous, like I was in the presence of God. I will never forget that moment. Roll Tide and RIP Coach Bryant. ❤️🏈

He kept this and read it every day. My time at the University was when Coach Bryant was the face of Alabama football. As great as Coach Saban is, Coach Bryant will always be the face of Alabama football for me.

Beginning speech: This is the begining of a new day God has given me this day To use as I will I can waste it or I can use it for good What I do today is very important Because I exchange a day of my life for it When tomorrow comes This day will be gone, forever. Leaving something in its place I have traded for it I want it to be GAIN, not LOSS GOOD, not EVIL SUCCESS, not FAILURE and I'll shall not forget The price I paid for it.

Although Coach Saban never mentioned it, I am confident he made sure he never deviated from this very same mental , physical, and spiritual process. Of special note, emotions are not included, only relationships. What a Devine privilege it has been to have lived in the times of the Bear and the Goat, without a nickels worth of difference between them. And there is another champion on deck. Count in it. We in Alabama now expect nothing less. Why? The Bear said so.
