I had the same thoughts that you had about being off grid when I was backpacking and enjoying the fact that I had everything I needed on my back. But then I realized I didn’t make any of it. I had no way of being independent without all the people who made my gear and my clothes. Thank you for reminding me of that day when I was backpacking and thank you to all the people who make all the cool gear!

100% agree about the off grid subject. Unless you are completely self sustainable with food water and fuel, even medicine to a degree, your not really off grid. I would love for you to do a video on how you make your travel dried food! Like the bean flakes! I balk at traveling without my stupid kitchen gadgets and really want to be able to bug out at a moments notice. Great video and gorgeous footage!

My understanding of "off grid" is simply not being tied to the electrical grid. So to me, you're 100% off grid! I really enjoy watching you live in accordance with your values. Thanks for the inspiration!

Being truly off grid is not just electrical usage. It comes down to energy usage. If energy is produced via items constructed on grid or by petrol etc., then you are not off grid. Amanda is right on this one in MHO
@gooseknack
@gooseknack 4 ай бұрын
Yes, agree. Off grid used to be simply living without connection to an electrical grid. Hence the reason for off grid power systems being called "off grid power systems" or "stand alone power systems" as they're known in Australia. For some reason in the last 5 or 10 years, some have a different idea. They believe it means having no connection to anything at all(no mobile, no starlink etc etc). Which, of course, is understandable. To anyone who is old enough, "Off Grid" will always mean having no connection to an electricity grid only. Which often also means no connection to municiple water or sewer. The advent of PV solar along with inverters, 12/24 volt compressor fridges, mobile/cell phones and starlink, has really improved the life of nomads. Personally, have been on the road 7 years and used off grid solar for almost the entire time.
@gooseknack
@gooseknack 4 ай бұрын
@@tianikane3312True! However, the original idea of off grid, was to have electrical power in places where it wasn't possible to have electrical power. Space exploration and satellites were the driving force behind the advancement of Solar for electricity. If it wasn't for the "space race", it's unlikely we'd have solar panels(Photo Voltaic) at the level currently available. Certainly not as cheap. To be truly "off grid" in the terms you mentioned, it would mean becoming a hunter/gatherer and farmer using old school implements and methods. While possible, it would mean turning your back on the modern world entirely. Consider the term "off grid" in conjunction with "electricity grid".
@PulpParadise
@PulpParadise 4 ай бұрын
@@gooseknack I understand where @tidelinetoalpine is coming from with the need for gasoline, etc., but I too grew up with the older notion of "off grid" meaning not connected to the grid, and ideally also not connected to any municipal supplies. I think what she is referring to would be more in line with complete self-reliance, which, as you commented below to @tianikane3312, essentially does mean going back in time more than a century, at the very least. Not many people are likely to do that. I would love to forage and grow my own food but I would also like to travel a lot more before settling down and while some of that is possible in a vehicle, much of it is not. We do what we can, as best as we can. I love solar and the immediacy of my cell phone for so much and am willing to trade some dependency for those grid-connected benefits. Maybe one day I will be closer to independence, but it is really hard work to live like they used to, when virtually everything was created by hand, with what you had available. It's all about balance.

Off-grid ... my perspective had been if I can't make all that I use to live, I have some connection to the grid. So I definitely agree with your perspective. Even so, it's nice to gather my manufactured stuff, my grown by others, made by others, invented by others stuff, pack it well in my 35 sq ft of space, and leave a carbon monoxide trail as I head into less cultivated spaces. The consolation - more time using less manufactured stuff (hopefully) leaves a smaller footprint, and leaves more natural spaces for others (people, critters, plants, etc) to use and enjoy. There are many aspects of this time to be grateful for! In medieval times, given the body I was born to, I suspect I wouldn't have lived past my 1st birthday. Thanks for the beautiful update - always wonderful to see you and Frank living the best moments possible!

I had really never thought about what is actually off grid but I do agree with you. At the end of the day it is all simply living and surviving, and hopefully thriving. I am very much enjoying watching as you get stronger and stronger as I am also on that journey. I am going to be 60 in December and trust me, it gets harder to get started the older we get. Good on you for starting in your 30s. I was always incredibly fit when I was young. Spent too much time at the gym, on my bike, and running. For many reasons I just let it all go in my 50s but I am back now! And, do come back to the US soon! But my gosh those Rockies are beautiful!

Being able to forage Being able to live without government assistance if need be. BTW I wasn't familiar with the brand of ur vest, but I love your vest, so I looked it up, and I'm in love with the style and colors. Plus, they have down feather 🪶

The moment one says "van life", already you are not off grid. The van itself is reliant on the supply chain for its initial construction, spare parts, tyres etc. etc as well as the gas and oil to run it. To be truly off grid one needs to be in the bush, as you say growing their own vegetables etc. But then, where do you get the seeds for the veges? Again, from a supplier who is on the grid. Watching people on youtube or other channels living close to the ground are interesting and have a lot to offer, but most of them are wearing boots/shoes and clothes, all made on grid. Watching historical camping videos, hunting videos etc. just shows how damn hard being truly offgrid is. Weaving of one's own cloth takes a great deal of time as well as the construction of garments from hide etc. In short, we all have to work together for the tribe to flourish, otherwise it is an existence. Living with people in so-called developing countries also offers us a great deal of learning with respect to off grid. Villagers work together, each person with their own skills to offer the group. We have visited many intentional communities over our time, and find they all rely on the grid to some extent or another.

With the way the world is going it may be necessary to view off grid as a prepper and I think that’s the purest view of off grid living. I would consider you a purest off gridder but with realistic expectations of how to go about it. You are inspiring and I learn a lot from you as I plan and save for my own Van life in Australia as a senior solo traveler. We can harvest much more solar than Canada though so it’s in the Aussie context I’m planning my van.

Thank you. If I was I was in Australia or somewhere with more year round sun I would have fixed panels on the roof but because I often spend winter in Canada it doesn’t make sense to me cost wise or especially aesthetically if I’m completely honest. It might sound shallow but I like how Truck looks without them and it’s easier to get away with sleeping places I’m not really supposed to.

So there's people who make fabric, use scissors to cut fabric to make your shirt, coat, socks, pants, clothing for Frank, your bedding, tent, hammock and cushions, blankets, curtains. Someone mined the metal and forged the scissors and die cutters to make the mold to mold the scissors and knives and pans and camping equipment that cut your hair or trim dog nails and made components on your glasses and all metal in your vehicle. Someone made the equipment to test your eyes and grind the glass or plastic to make your glasses. No matter what you can't totally escape being connected to others that contributed to industry. We can try to be careful in our purchases but much of it is related to drilling petro. I lived in AK and now near oil refinery and they do start out with huge wages than all other jobs. Just walking the pipeline to inspect ...walking and using your eyes to look for leaks is insane. There are constant leaks too. It's hard to omit plastics because you drive and need oil for the engine and oil comes in plastics made from that oil. What bothers me the most is how it's not being recycled into bricks then housing...it's hurricanes picking up trash from dump and lands in oceans. It's people not picking up after themselves and leaving for others to pick up. It's fun to slow down and focus and appreciate your decisions. Take care.

I do believe that you can live off grid, but it can only work with very big cuts and I personally don't want to go that far. I don't have a problem with society, but I would like to be freer and more flexible and I don't want to live my life the way we're told to just because that's what everyone does or that's what we're told to do. Hello! I’m supposed to be sleeping (starting night shifts at 7pm-7am), but sleep isn’t happening , so I watched your latest video. I’ve also got hip pain (sciatica), and it’s been good for most of this year due to strength training (plus squats with weights), but the last couple days the pain has come back, and it hurts to stand up straight and even walk. Work should be a treat this weekend:-( Anyway, I thought your form looked great while doing your exercises atop your van, and wondered if you would consider sharing your “butt workout” routine? I’m 60, and yes, it’s fantastic you are addressing your pain issues now! My dr just prescribed me Celebrex for years. Until I started my hospital job, I never knew this was not a good thing to do. My fault for not researching it, but I had complete faith and trust in my doctor. I dropped Celebrex from my life in 2015 except for extreme pain days, but the working out and building muscle has helped so much more than the pharmaceuticals ever had (which just masks the problem, and fixes nothing). Anyway., I love your shows, your lifestyle, and your precious Frank!! I adore animals, but dogs, oh my, they have always been my truest and best friends. I’m a born and raised BC girl, living in Ontario for work for the past 20 years), and with a dream of going back to my beautiful home when I retire in the next few years. And then I hope to spend some of my time exploring with a van, and seeing so much of BC that I haven’t seen. Thanks for your work on your channel. You do a wonderful job, and I look forward to seeing your adventures. Much love to you and Frank❤❤❤

I had to look up the definition of "off grid" because you seemed to be talking about way more than I thought it was. You are living off grid according to Mirram Webster's definition. At least I don't see any water lines or power lines connected to Truck. LOL. However, I do see your point. We all need society and the supply chain for something. No van is an island. All the best to everyone, but especially Sweet Frank.

😆 I’ve been doing my workouts in the ground since as there were a couple wobbly moments that first time which felt pretty sketchy in the roof. Also I love that ‘no van is a island’ 💯

That is a very sweet intro you made here! Offgrid for me is more a level of possible self reliancy, beeing dependent on food and gas are big disadvantages of living nomadic in a vehicle. Living in Middle-Europe even the smallest step of going off grid on your property is very difficult unless you do it illegally.

Off grid to me, is depending on the land and yourself for survival. But im on the grid and i would love to learn to live off grid, forging for my suvival. If anything should happen and we have to depend on ourselves and each other, i would love to know how to manage for myself.

I agree with you Amanda, there is no such thing as off-grid vanlife....but living this lifestyle has made me more aware of my consumption. We are all consumers of one thing or another but by limiting how much we consume, we can make a small impact on the environment. On another note....I would NEVER guess you are "close to 40"....I thought you are in your mid-20's....and I LOVE what you said about wanting to age with vitality.....that's a much more admirable way of looking at aging (in my opinion) vs subscribing to all the nonsense out there about not getting wrinkles and grey hair. Health is #1. Thanks again for sharing with us 🤗❤️🐾🐾

You are exactly right! if you’re dependent on anything that is serviced and not self reliant or at least whether dependent it is not offered. Those say they are are using propane or using gas for their vehicle and like you said. going to the grocery store. I live very rule in a tiny house tucked in the edge of the woods, but I have an extension cord in my sister‘s barn that allows me to cook on a one burner and to run lights or vacuum cleaner. Yes, I’m roughing it sorta I don’t have running water or a bathroom other than Cedar shavings and a bedside commode system, but I’m still hooked up to power of some sort.. I also can only run one thing at a time like if I wanna cook, I can’t run the A/C if I want to vacuum. I have to turn off AC or burner and you get the picture.

I think most people think off grid is simply not plugged into the electric grid. I like your take on off-grid it's very honest and aware of the dependencies we have on society. Good for you getting out there and doing yoga. You have inspired me to get my own booty in gear and get back on that workout wagon. I totally have experienced the soreness for several days after the initial workout out. It does get better and it won't be as extreme. Thank you for another enoyable video.

Hello Amanda and Frank, so nice to see you both in the Rocky's. It is really nice out there. I think that off grid means, no support of anything only yourself. Imposseble if you are living in a van. You could have plants growing in the van but i think that will not work really. So i am agreeing with you. I wish you well. Have nice times out there and i will see you on the next! Bye for now.

Excellent video. I absolutely agree. I appreciate you pointing out that self-reliance is still a wonderful goal for anyone, even if they can't be completely off grid. I had been struggling with the fact that the universe basically kicked me off of the road, and I'm now living in an apartment. It was an everyday regret and sadness. I couldn't seem to reconcile myself to apartment life, let alone find gratitude and peace. Then gas prices skyrocketed. The fact that it is a finite energy source and is going to con8to be more expensive, never cheaper. Then there was the health problem that took me off the road, it's permanent and my ability to drive will come to an early end. So, today, I am very grateful for my cozy, affordable home. The number of homeless people increases daily, and I could very well have been one of them. So, thank you again for your honesty! Good for you being smart enough to start a fitness regimen! Squats have caused me pain always! 😅 I have been in excellent shape too! 😂 As always, Frank is awesome and so freaking cute! Thanks again!

I’m happy to hear your thoughts on off grid. I’ve never put that much thought into it however. I feel like what you were describing is off grid is more like homesteading the grid is our electrical grid in my mind. It’s always been like that in my mind.it’s OK to look at it differently

I think there are varying levels of what's considered off grid. You're off grid in the sense you aren't hooked up to utilities. But you still need the goods of the supply chain.
