I've got two tie bars; one in a silver and relatively simple, clean English style, and a gold one with a Focke Wulf 190. My guess is the original owner was a Luftwaffe pilot in the 30s and 40s, or it is a post-war curiosity.

Thank you for this information. I always thought a tie clip should cover more than half of the tie's width, but I wasn't sure. I own nine tie clips, all inherited from my father and probably manufactured in the 1950's or early 1960's. Most are of a very simple design, but a couple are unusual. One has a very small replica of an automotive spark plug mounted on a plain gold-colored elongated triangle. The other is simply a gold-colored electrical connector. These may have been novelties or advertising gimmicks handed out by auto parts salesmen since my father worked as a truck parts counter clerk at the time. I wish I knew more about them, but I still wear them anyway.

Often tie clips or bars were fashioned with tools of a particular trade, example: a mechanic would have a tie clip shaped like a wrench, someone in a gun club would have one shaped like a shotgun or rifle etc ..hope this helps

I had to wear stiff detachable collars at the school I went to. We also wore a three-piece suit. The dress standard required a four-in-hand knot that sat on my collar stud. A tie clip worn just below the first waistcoat button helped the blade of the tie to stand up slightly. All complicated for a 13 year old to muster and uncomfortable to, but we did look very smart.

@@Ganbakodon Glad that was helpful. Mustering skills at that age never leave you. Even now if I wear a collar and tie with a V neck jumper I do the same thing. It just lifts the blade slightly and I find stops the knot from slipping through the day. Our housemaster used to say that 'Style had nothing to do with the cut of a good suit, it's what's beneath the lining that matters.' Nevertheless we did have to look very smart within the mantra of understanding how to do things properly. R

I like to have my tie clip cover the entire width of my tie in a few instances. Chief among those being when I wear a knit tie. My knit ties are pretty skinny, as most knit ties are, and I think having the entire width covered looks good.

+Gentleman's Gazette: Insted of a tieclip. It should keep the tie in place. Have not tried it but you porobably have. Got to get a vest. 👔👔👔👔👔👔
@ReticentSparrow
@ReticentSparrow 8 жыл бұрын
+Myrslokstok I find it depends on what you're doing and what your objective is. If you want something that will keep the tie close to your body and jazz up a dress shirt without the bulk and formality of a jacket, a vest is a good option. However, if you are doing anything beyond sitting down and standing up, the tie will shift around from side-to-side. You will either need to re-adjust the tie periodically or embrace the look of an off-center tie. Personally, I'm not a fan of the off-center look, so I've taken Mr. Schneider's advice and started to wear both.

I'm trying to figure out a Wedding gift for my Fiance, and I like the look of a tie-clip and the fact that it doesn't puncture any ties. In my online shopping, I have come across tie-clips and tie-bars that have short chains attached to them. They appear to be meant to be worn differently than a tie-chain, so my question is what the purpose of the chain on the tie-clip/tie-bar is? Is the chain on the tie-clip meant to loop through a shirt button-hole? Or is the chain meant to hold an attachable charm? Thank you in advance for your advice :)

I would much rather my tie bar was straight and was the same width as the tie than to wear it at an angle and look shorter than the width of the tie as a result. I couldn't wear a tie bar at a big sloping angle like that, to me it looks awful.

I always thought skinny ties were trendy and annoying looking. Am I wrong? are they classic in any regard or should they be avoided? I suppose I haven't seen anyone elegant try to pull it off...
@gentlemansgazette
@gentlemansgazette 9 жыл бұрын
Comment KZbin well trends come and go, even in classic men's clothing. In the 1930's ties were much shorter than today, and cut differently. Often they were quite wide at the end. Over time, ties developed and by the 1960's they were often very slim. In the 1990's ties were wide again, now they are thin. I am confident there will be wider ties again in a few years. If you have a 8cm or 9cm tie, you should be able to always wear it...
@commentyoutube8002
@commentyoutube8002 9 жыл бұрын
Excellent! I only possess 8cm ties, and I really like the look of it. It's proportions are just right. I feel like no matter what the trend is, it's always best to find a width that compliments your body type because there are always things that will look better on you than others.

Interesting. I was taught that one should never have a horizontal line across the body - except the belt, which doesn't show - and therefore to *always* rake my tie bar a bit. To this day, a horizontal tie bar looks jarring to me. I always rake my tie bar, and I suspect that's why the classic men of the past did so too.

How can a man with a large neck use a tie collar bar for style, but do not want to over heat or "choke" all day. He is one of the four second in commands for his department and wants to to stand out in appearance as well in his performance. However, he has worked his way up through the rank and earned his degrees as a fleet worker for his municipality. Now he must find his own professional look that is modern and comfortable for him that still allows the fleet guys to relate to him.
