mThere is not alot of action in this video but it shows what happens when the Canadian National brings the old ties to Koppers. I took alot of footage out as it was the train going back and forth. I actually started to leave as it seemed the engines would never come into view when they finally did come into view-but I was already on the hill. The map view of Koppers/Certainteed shows the Biomass Plant with a yellow circle. The blue circle is where I take the CN when it comes into L'Anse. The red circle is where the train crosses US41 to go to Koppers. I will post the Summit footage in the next posting I make!

Wow even less snow and ice and it was just announced Milwaukee had it's warmest meteorological winter. Glad you were able to utilize the snowmobile trail for that new view of the spur it certainly points out how all the rail action is truly concentrated in one relatively small area. It doesn't sound quite right to say ties for Koppers because for years they were the tie supplier not the consumer. They did have a comparatively small plant in Superior that has been closed probably for 25 years

Koppers still has a plant in Lake Linden-as a matter of fact they were in Lake Linden first!

Hi Nancy, thank you for another fine video. I have to say that I am a little ignorant as to why they travel so slowly. I like it, so don't take me wrong, but these days of all the hustle and bustle it just seems a little odd. I personally do not care for any of the high speed trains everyone talks about these days, so it's very paradoxical to me to see one moving at about 10mph or so. Koppers: I had to do a little research to find out what a Koppers is. It's a recycling of combustibles to make electricity, especially old railroad ties is what I read. I have seen railroad ties in a pile burn, and it's not a pretty sight. I don't know what they treat them with today, but about 20yrs ago it was probably tar. Back then I saw the biggest Black cloud emanating from a pile of old ties about 15miles from my house so I drove over to see what it was. Someone had a huge pile of railroad ties and they were burning like no tomorrow. So, I imagine they burn well in a controlled furnace designed to burn the for heat. Great idea if you ask me. OK, FB, Thank You and we'll look for you again. ben/ michigan

Hello Ben! CN manual states 10MPH from Euclid yard (Ishpeming) to L"Anse. Very old rails and ties that are gradually being replaced and a pretty steep drop of 10 miles from Summit to L'Anse and a curve where three depots have been wiped out or damaged -after that 10 miles of downhill travel makes 10MPH a good idea! I too love then going by slowly and if you are chasing them it is easier to beat the train to the next photo location before the train arrives. Did you notice Koppers is also in Lake Linden. No ties to be processed there so I am not sure of their work there. The Biomass plant has done a pretty good job of capturing the "fugitive" dust when the locals protested that they were being poisoned. I worked two blocks from the plant and never experienced any fugitive dust. The steam coming out of the plant is white-at one time it was darker but with the scrubbers etc. put in there is not even any odor. When there is an odor it is a "woodsy" odor that makes me think of working with my Dad as a child as he built something and the sawdust accumulated on the floor as he sawed away! I was the cleaner f the woodshop!

@@nancyhaun Thank you v much for the explanations. Negatory on the Lake Linden location, the article I read only mentioned L' Anse location. I am for renewable resources as long as it makes sense. No pollution for sure, and that includes soot or dust or residue etc. I lived about 8 miles East of Pontiac Michigan for my first 24 yrs and I doubt if you ever heard about the smelting Pontiac Motors did but they actually made iron and steel from ore and coal but the fallout was unbelievable. Everything got a coating of Iron Oxide dust within 1/2 mile of the plant. (not at my house) I toured the steel making part of the plant in mini college and saw first hand how the guys worked with molten Iron. They went to electric furnaces to stop the fallout, but it was way more expensive than coal & coke, so they shut it down. tnx ben

Nice job today, Nancy! Lotsa switching action. Love those old Wisconsin Central gondolas. I wonder what that steel cylinder is laying on the ground at 9:08. Looks like it has a hard neoprene casing around it. Wonder if it fell off a scrap car? ☃☃☃

That is a sand barrel -there is one on the other side of the rails as well. I believe as the snowmobilers go over the tracks they can become iced up so having sand there is a good idea. During the snowy winters the CN Hyrail crew is often there making sure the rails are clear for when the train comes in.

Love the long shadows lighting. I wish more people would zoom out their shots to put the train in perspective like you did. Koppers would have suspended solids and BOD discharge limits much like we have at the mill here in Rhinelander and is propably spot checked by your DNR. I'm a wastewater treatment plant operator so it's firmly in my wheelhouse. Awesome video as usual, enjoyed it greatly. Thanks Nancy!

Thank you for taking us to some new locations to view the Canadian National's L'Anse Local coming into L'Anse and then working its way into the Koppers plant. The gondolas and hopper cars had a lot of old railroad ties going into Koppers to be destroyed. I presume that the railroad tires are ground up before they are burned. Does Koppers generate electricity that is added to the local grid?
@nancyhaun
@nancyhaun 4 ай бұрын
We are told it goes to the grid-just like the energy from the solar panels by the Shrine. All energy goes somewhere else. WE would give anything for power at the Shrine but it all goes elsewhere!
@thomasmackowiak
@thomasmackowiak 4 ай бұрын
@@nancyhaun to make use of electricity made using solar panels may require a storage battery system that you could draw on for the electricity needs of the Bishop Baraga Shrine.

Hi, Nancy! Thank you very much for your video! I really like it. I just have a quick question, where do you find time table/schedules for the train?
@nancyhaun
@nancyhaun 4 ай бұрын
Thank you-I just started following them and learned their times. That being said-schedules often change and I have spent many hours waiting for the train to arrive, Not so much anymore though. The CN arrives in L'Anse Tuesday and Thursday mornings with occasional variations.

Question-- looked on Google map, noticed that there is a on the switchback, in the industrial area. How many car lengths is the tail of the switchback, and did it ever re- connect to the original mainline??
