Tie Dye Designs: Reverse Dyeing a Geode (Using Out White Brite)

This tutorial is for a reverse dyed geode shirt. This shirt started out a peach color and after using Out White Brite to remove part of the color, it was dyed with various shades of purple.

Ok, I may be in the minority here, but I actually LOVE how this came out. It may be a mystery but the light parts mimic how nature is full of surprises which to me goes with the geode vibe! I too have had this happen but never analyzed it too much because “trust the process” and have fun😂!!!

When I do my reverse dyes I make sure I get as absolutely much of that OWB out of the shirt. I rinse them like CRAZY! Ya might have had a bit more OWB in those thick folds in there and that can definitely mess with saturation!

That's true. It was wrapped really tightly, so all the OWB may not have come out in the washing machine.

I’m with you on this one Angie. It is quite odd. I was wondering if maybe it was over. Saturated with ice that may be the dye was pulled through too much. But when you did the rinse out, it looked like it was really purple. So I don’t know why it washed out in the laundry. You win some you lose some.

It is perplexing. I wonder if it just didn't get saturated very well with the soda ash solution. That's about the only thing I can think of.

Unrelated to how this shirt turned out, but have you tried an out white brite solution (in a spray bottle) like the soda ash solution to remove color in only certain parts of a garment? I have two sets of bed sheets that I want to dye but only in certain areas.

I haven't tried that. Out White Brite has to be activated using really hot water and I haven't ever tried putting it in a spray bottle. So far I haven't figured out how to remove color from a small area using it.

I've had this happen with some reverse dyes I've done bone dry. I wish I had an explanation! It seems totally random to me. I'd re-tie this and over dye.

Have you ever cracked open a geode? You never know what you are going to get. I think it looks very natural. And maybe, since the sizing was incorrect, perhaps the fiber content was as well.

I think what might have happened is that you didn't let the shirt dry after you rinsed and washed the color removal. I let them dry twice. Once after color removal wash and once after soaking soda ash.

That may have been the problem. I did let it dry after the soda ash soak, but it was damp when I put it in the soda ash solution.

If that is the only shirt out of the bunch that didn't get good color saturation, and if it was the only shirt of that particular brand, then I'd blame the fabric itself. Maybe it was mislabeled and had a lot of polyester in it?

I don't think it had polyester, but I think this shirt just didn't want to cooperate. 😀

Thats a pretty awesome effect but yeah... its disappointing when you get to the rinse and see the shirt didnt come out 'right'. Then someone else thinks its great but you say no the colors are weak here and this and that LOL
