For my 3X hoodies, I think I am going to cut drain holes in the bottom of a tote and then prop it over a larger totes for a rack dye

So pretty. My husband is the horticulture manager of a botanical garden and he gets plants in these bulb crates that are really long, I wonder if those would work? You could ask for some at a nursery and see what they had. Or order from a nursery supply. I’ll share a pic in the FB group.

The wiffle balls work great and I swear by the splatter guard. Why not use it, it makes spirals look terrific and it’s quick and easy. That’s my motto. What I did first was put it on my table so the back of the shirt was face up, then tucked each sleeve inside the shirt, I rolled it up diagonally starting from the bottom left of the shirt up to the top right of the sleeve. Basically like a cinnamon roll yes. Put a handful of rubber bands around it and then dyed it.

I forgot… it didn’t need it. I wonder if adding the extra is unnecessary?? 🤷‍♀️ I should do a experiment. I didn’t iron the sweatshirt. I iron T-shirts or womenswear because it shows the pattern better. Many times if disliked a project and then after ironing it I love it. Give it a try, Zalia, then let me know if you see a difference. The dye is set during the batching. 😉❤️🌈

Thanks Denise! I used quite a bit of dye. Keep in mind you can always add more dye and another round of ice if you need more saturation. You’ve maybe even seen me flip a scrunch and reapply. Play around. You’ll find your method. ❤️🌈

How many bags of ice (like the ones I can buy at the Chevron next door) do you think this shirt took (or would take)? I don't want to not have enough. I saw where someone else had put the dye on top of the ice, and these patterns turn out just amazing. It's kind of like designing fabric. Love your results. Any shad of purple is my favorite color. I would have a couple bags. One for sure and another just on case. That being said it really depends on you project. The size, amount of dye, saturation. What I showed in the video is what it took for this large thick sweatshirt. I love purple too. 💜❤️🌈

I list the colors in the tutorials. Always. Not sure. Something big enough to accommodate the large sweatshirt. I have over 300 tutorials. Maybe one of them can help. Try thinking outside the box for what you have around you, like I had to. Best of luck. 💗❤️🌈

I caught this one at the beginning! I have been told that if you don't have textile detergent, the closest thing is Woolite. It actually has the same ingredients and is also a rinsing agent. I have not tried it yet, but I got the info from the coursework I took so...hey, give it a go if you don't have anything else to use.

Looks great like always. Do you have to batch it where it's warmer in house? I do most of my toe dying in basement but it's much cooler there. What does the warm do when batching? Still learning how to tie dye, and I love watching your videos, learned so much from watching you, thanks for sharing

I tie dye out in an unheated sun porch. This time of year it might be 50°. For proper color saturation procion dye needs to be at 70° or higher so it bonds with the natural fibers during batching. Cooler temps equal longer batch times. After 48 hours the chemical reaction stops. So your window for maximum bonding and brightness is within that 48 hour period. Colder temps might result in more pastel colors and more unbonded dye rinsing down the drain… hope this helps. ❤️🌈

I tried this method. Question: Could I dye something with the run off dye in the bottom of my container or would there be soda ash in it that would negatively affect the process?

Do you rinse out the soda ash after the shirt has soaked in it or do you just spun it dry without rinsing the soda ash thanks

Do not rinse out the soda ash. It’s need to raise the pH of the natural fibers so the procion fiber reactive dye can chemically react and bond with the material. Soda ash is a requirement. ❤️🌈

Steph, as I anticipate my spin dryer arrival I have one question. If you do discharge dye or dye over dye work do you still spin them out in the spin dryer? ✌🏻❤️

I haven’t. It says not to put shoes in there. Angie, @funendeavorstiedyelab might know better. She does way more reverse dyes. My process was to hand squeeze the crap out of them… then soak in old only reverse dye soda ash, then squeeze the crap out of them. I love the look of reverse dyes but I don’t enjoy the process. It feels extremely labor intensive. Let me know what you think of you spinner when it arrives. I LOVE mine!!! 😃❤️🌈
