Tie Dye: Don't Touch The Muck? [Ice Dye, Muck Dye]

I was asked to do this experiment. It’s written down in my never ending project book. You beat me to it. These turned out great! I don’t shake my muck, but I’ve had to move it and I don’t think it makes that much of a difference. These turned out gorgeous. I love the color combination. 😄❤️🌈

You are the only person who I have found that has done this experiment. I’m dyeing a geode shirt for my Mom and had to flip it over. Hopefully I didn’t mess it up. Thanks for doing this. Love watching your videos.

I didn't do a side by side experiment but I find the same as your experiment turned out. I've had to move my items in muck and it really didn't make a difference. Thank you for all your expertise.

I've felt like this was the case for years; but, there's an endless number of "if you touch it, you'll ruin it" posts on social media so I felt I was forced to "prove it". ;)

Wonderful comparison! I’m getting looser the longer I dye and my experiments line up with yours. About to try some more precise pleated patterns with ice dye and muck…we shall see!

This sets my mind at ease a little. My dyes hang out in the laundry room while they batch and I’ve been slightly concerned that the minor jiggle the washer/dryer causes would negatively effect my muck dyes.

Thanks for this experiment. I haven’t done muck dyeing yet, but I’m going to give it a try soon. I like the undisturbed one best, but it’s reassuring to know if it gets bumped it won’t ruin the shirt.

Here is my scientific theory from a non-scientific layman... Once the Fiber Reactive Dye, Soda Ash, and Water are combined, the pigments become reactive. That reaction degrades over time, at some point it stops reacting. That muck is spent dye that has reacted for a bit of time as the ice melted. It doesn't have much reactivity left to really mess up a shirt if the muck is disturbed. We all know that if you add soda ash to liquid dye, you have to use it IMMEDIATELY or it won't react to the cloth fibers as well or at all. Same concept for muck.

They do look very similar. Thanks for this experiment! Also, I noticed that you don't use hot water to do a rinse out after the cold water rinse out. Curious as to why? I notice I get a lot more excess dye released when I do the hot water rinse after the cold washout. Does your washer do it well enough?

Coolest thing in the undisturbed is the great mandala- like color prism at the center that explodes into color🤷🏾‍♂️

I can't find anything about hwi for muck dying so I am not hopeful but doing the experiment anyways

What’s bad is when you have to dump off the extra muck and it makes a cool color shift and everyone you know asks you to make them one and you can’t recreate the effect again 🤯. But in general I have to move my dyed shirts so my muck dyes get sloshed around every summer and yes they do lose a little of the brightness in colors but not enough to fret over. I used to make everyone stay out of the laundry room for three days till I realized it wasn’t that big of a deal

I agree. I routinely move them during the process to shift between other jobs; but, there are so many posts on social media warning that "even the slightest touch will completely ruin your tie dye". No, no it won't. Tie dyeing is supposed to be relaxing not a constant fear of someone walking by the bowl and causing it to jiggle. ;)

Compare: ice dyes with shirt soaked in soda ash with pure dye powder vs shirt not soaked in soda ash with dye powder that's mixed with soda ash
