This is an experiment to see how a "saw tooth" dye pattern will work with a peacock style fold. I think this is the method I'll use from now on for Peacock Folds.

It reminds me of the rose window at the Washington National Cathedral! This is beautiful! My ice maker is broken or I would try this technique but I'm going to try something similar with wet dyes and tying the shirt the same way. I'm brand new to this craft so I'm gathering as much knowledge as I can before I start.

I gathered about 3 months worth of info before I started! Haha. I'm still a newbie but, I have definitely been studying fold and dye pattern combinations, lately. Trying to SOMEWHAT control the results. Happy dying, when you do decide to start! Tip: take your time in the folding/tying process, it yields much better results--this coming from someone who has NO patience!

Looks great! Do you have to add dye to the second side when you ice dye? or does the dye melt through completely.
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the the design and how it looks after the first cycle of ice melt. You can add a second round of ice to the first side, flip and dye the second side, place it in a container and do a muck dye, etc. Each option will result in a different final look.

Oh, there are many, many of us that ice dye. There's also LWI (Low Water Immersion) and HWI (Hot Water Irrigation) with both liquid and ice dye methods. Check out my "Batch Time Test" video for the results of all of those methods: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qX-TgWauhKypfdE And, to see the difference between ice dyeing and liquid dyeing the same pattern, check out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpiooYlvZZqfpqM If almost always prefer ice dyeing. It has less prep time and more color depth due to the dye splitting.

@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 3 жыл бұрын
My wash routine is: 1) Rinse-out in the sink until I'm sure the soda ash has been flushed along with any visible particulate dye. Typically a max of 2-4 minutes. I do not rinse until the water runs clear as I've seen no issues with contamination/bleeding in my shortened rinse process. 2) Wash in the washing machine with warm water and an extra rinse cycle using whatever detergent I have at the time. I haven't used synthrapol in about a decade and I haven't seen any issues arise by not using it. 3) I run the shirt(s) with a soft towel in the dryer. 4) After that, if it's a personal shirt, I toss it in with whatever else I'm washing on warm. In our house, we do not separate brights, colors, black, white, etc. *Everything* is washed together and I haven't seen any issues with color bleeding or excessive wear on the shirts.

The spoon I use in almost all of the videos is a baby food spoon that holds less than 1/4 teaspoon of dye - even when the dye is heaped on. I don't keep track of the volume of dye I use per shirt; but, from inventory control, I know I average about 50 cents worth of dye per large shirt.

Would you recommend RIT dye?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 3 жыл бұрын
No. RIT dye is more like a stain while Procion fiber reactive dye bonds to the fabric fibers. The result is that shirts dyed with Procion dye stay vibrant for many, many dozens of washes. My sons have shirts that have been washed over 200 times and they still retain 70%+ of the original color saturation.

Have you thought about using zip ties instead of rubberbands for folds like this one and can you put it in the freezer instead of using ice if using liquid dye instead of using solid dyes? If you mean the stitches that actually sew the shirt together, it's because it was sewn with polyester thread instead of cotton. Procion dyes will not bond to polyester. Stitches on a shirt sewn with cotton thread will dye the same colors as the shirt. But cotton-sewn shirts harder to find and more expensive.
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 3 жыл бұрын
@@lucindawelenc2191 - I'm referring to the quality of the stitching, not the use of polyester thread. I routinely purchase the PFD version of the shirts that have cotton stitching for certain projects; but, the PFD versions have a very long torso compared to the standard G200 shirts so I don't use them for most projects. The polyester thread/undyed stitching is fine with me as I've found the polyester thread to be stronger than the cotton thread; but, the quality of the stitching since they changed to the silver tags is poor compared to the previous white tag versions of the shirts.

Really enjoy your videos. You are to the point and very informative. I hope I may offer a couple of suggestions? I would rather not watch you rinse the garment for such a long time; it's kind of boring. Please silence your phone. A bit annoying. Other than that, you're great!
