Shoot for 24-48 hours so the dye can fully react. The longer you wait, the easer rinsing should be. I hope this helps!

Start with a dry or damp shirt? Where does the soda ash you listed in the materials list come in?

@@shannont360 Shannon T, thanks for your question. You'll want to soak your shirts in a high PH solution so the dyes can fully react with the cotton fibers of the shirt. The soda ash is used to raise the PH of water you will initially soak your shirts in prior to tie dying them. I soak for 20 minutes in the fixer water (3/4cup soda ask + 1 gallon warm water), then drain and spin my shirts for a minute to make the shirts less wet and only moderately damp. Then you can tie dye for your pro results!
