This was remade with Star Wars music, but personally I like the metal/rock version. For one thing, it was music and video made to complement each other so it fits better. But it showed the different way this conflict went as compared to the movies. Sad thing is this is what Rebellion had to deal with all the time, being hunted and outnumbered. That scene of interdictor using mass shadows to defend against Y-Wing torpedoes and rockets was just amazing.

Thanks for playing this animated video for us! I had also not heard of or seen this before tonight. Loved it! I think one of my fave parts was what you had mentioned as well about seeing the pilot's faces through their helmets. For me, that gave me a sense of "Oh yeah... there's actual people under those helmets. They're not just droids." Yeah, they be fightin' for the wrong side, but they don't know that. Those pilots might have had families, or lovers and such. And you know... just when I thought you couldn't get any cooler, Carly... you go and mention that you love the 80's. Man, the 80's were totally rad! Finally, I have to admit... I'm extremely jealous of your gonk droid.

I wish they would make a deal with LFL to do a series following a TIE pilot from graduation from the Academy to the end of the Empire. It would be beyond epic. This style of animation was very reminiscent of a lot of cartoons I watched in the 80s and that's why I love it so much. Totally agree, the rock music really added to the atmosphere of the dogfighting. Glad you got to enjoy this. Keep up the fun work.

Loved your reaction and enthusiasm. Fun fact: Otaking is (was?) a professional animator at a studio, this was apparently his passion project that he worked on during his weekends for over *4 years* before it was finished. It's a real labor of love and the love that went into it really shows. Don't know if you've watched it yet, but a reaction to Andor would also be cool. I loved the way the show gives us the "street level" experience of life in the Empire just before it goes fully tyrannical, and the Rebellion when it's just getting started. The way it could make the Empire scary rather than a bunch of useless buffoons who are only a threat because of a couple of space wizards was a very welcome experience as well. Anyway, thanks again!

No no, I get you. It's not that you *want* the Rebels to lose. No no! It's just that the Empire is supposed to be this scary, intimidating villain, but they aren't because they always lose. It just feels so *right* to see them win, because every movie needs its protagonists to come out on top despite the odds. So with every movie, the Empire seems like more and more of a joke. Canonically it really isn't, though. We're just seeing some very selective moments usually. I love this animation because I imagine in between the movies (and probably a few times during them, somewhere else in the galaxy), this is exactly the kind of thing that would've been happening.

I don't know what some of the other commenters are on, but this is not something inspired by last gen. This is animated in the unique style of stuff from way, way before then. If you don't believe me, then watch some Robotech/Macross anime animation. Essentially the same style. The animator clearly knew which direction he wanted to head into with the way he drew each frame and stylized things. Things such as the missile tracers/rocket trails. That scene where the Rebel cruiser ship shot a tie fighter square in the cockpit, did you notice how the tie fighter sort of got bloaty and bubbled out? Almost like it was organic than mechanical. This is all reminiscent of old school anime. Not Top Gun or whatever previous generation stuff. I fully agree that this is very cool and wickedly done. But what you are not seeing are the stats. Each frame is a page, or layer, of HAND DRAWN scenes. The frames are put in order and you basically have a giant flip book. This is how old school animation was done, but with supreme meticulousness and way more frames than a simple flipbook. Like you're shooting/pausing/shooting/pausing each millisecond of something. From start to finish, I would dare estimate that it contains more than 15,000 frames of hand drawn page, after page, after page of hard work and dedication. That would mean this took maybe a year or two of consistent dedication and pacing of literal hand drawing technique. On top of that, you have to take into account the story boarding. Let's say we're looking at what could be Scene #31 and it's where the lady tie fighter pilot does the in-place helical spin to fire her salvo of rockets/missiles. The animator has to draw not just the vessel spinning and rotating, but take into account how/when each pictured projectile enters the scene, travels the scene, each has their own rocket trail, that all of these things are moving together in a supposed space setting, etc. There are so many specifics and elements acting all at once within that single scene and he's drawn each one with its own timing and intended rate of viewing. The animator and his editing team deserve way more kudos and praise than they actually get. They replicated an old school technique and brought life to a media that was never intended to be done in such a manner, originally. This is how Kiki's Delivery Service was produced. The same way Princess Mononoke was animated. You remember Sailor Moon? Ronin Warriors? Dragonball (first series featuring kid Goku)??? Hello! The only single difference is that one team has a squad of animators + editors, the other has a an army of them instead. I'm just glad that there are people out there who are bold and tenacious enough to take on such projects. Re-learning the old practices and reviving them.
