Not only is this a love letter to old Sci-Fi anime from the '80s and early '90s, it's also a love letter to Star Wars. Using the logo from the old PC game Star Wars: Tie Fighter, to the inclusion and abilities of the Interdictor, to how it makes the _Empire_ of all things look like competent badass villains. One of my absolute favorite fan shorts. If Ota King are to remain a one-hit wonder, then I'm glad this is their one hit.

Most of the cockpit interfaces, sound effects, ambient noise, costume details, ship configurations, and even certain character designs were all based on the 1994 Lucasarts "Tie Fighter" flightsim game. @@emilytano the graphics were good for the time, but they are very old. Someone made a total conversion mod of xwing alliance that has nearly everything from the original tie fighter, and another mod gives it nearly modern graphics (xwing alliance used a more powerful engine than tie fighter since it came later, but it is still old also). The original tie fighter was also difficult to get working on modern systems (for a variety of reasons, but mainly stemming from it being made originally for ms DOS instead of even a windows os). So if possible get xwing alliance and use the modern graphics mod and the tie fighter conversion mod (I think they also added support for vr headsets in the graphics mod). That said, there are certain things the original had that I don't think has been completely reproduced today, mainly something called imuse (dynamic music control system).

This animation hits *SO* much harder if you've played the X-Wing/Tie Fighter games because of how many details carry over: 2:01 - Right off the bat, this is a blending of the movies and games, 2:20 transmitting the data you get briefed on before flying into the mission. 3:00 - This features a loving mixing of both movie and in-game HUD elements with targeting data, shields, energy allocation, radar, and more. 3:24 - Although the hangers were always on the sides of Star Destroyers in Star Wars Battlefront 2 (The *_GOOD_* one), that was always where ships entered/exited Destroyers in TIE Fighter. 3:38 - I *_believe_* the games introduced the Tug/Spacetug ships seen here. 3:43 - Both the opening door and contents inside heavily reference TIE Fighter's briefing room where you'd get your objectives as well as the aforementioned combat data about what ships you'd be fighting with/against. 3:56 - Even though TIE Fighter is referenced more, we get a look in the cockpit that draws from the HUD of the predecessor X-Wing game. 4:01 - Yet more aspects of the TIE Fighter HUD are showcased, specifically the targeting highlight, reticule, and even the 3 little rectangles above it. (I think they were used to indicate when you locked on with a warhead, *you* were being locked onto, or both.) (One can be seen here along with using the radar: 4:37) 4:11 - It's a legit part of the ship but it's worth noting you legitimately *NEED* a flightstick peripheral in order to play the game, and they *DID* come with buttons beyond just the trigger. Also, reallocating power on the fly (pun unintended) was an actual element of the gameplay: You had 1 universal source of energy and you had to choose how much to assign to lasers and/or shields. The more energy you assigned, the faster they'd recharge, but the less you'd have to increase your ship's top speed. 4:25 - The shields on Rebel Fighters vs TIEs is also not a continuity error but a legit part of the lore and gameplay in TIE Fighter: Rebel ships were more heavily outfitted because every fighter for the cause was important, while the Imperials were more expendable so the early TIE models actually lacked shielding. Which is why you see TIEs taking serious damage/outright going down with 1 shot, while the Rebel fighters tend to have a shot or two get deflected before they can be hit directly throughout. 5:01 - That's the sound specifically Missiles made when fired. They're unfortunately missing from the previous scene. Bombers like that would've been outfitted with at *LEAST* torpedoes since missiles are the weakest warheads (the other basic ones being Rockets and Heavy Bombs). However, I have more retained knowledge about TIE Fighter so maybe Missiles were the only warheads in the X-Wing game(s) and that's why they were used. 7:03 - Bigger ships didn't tend to attack each other from long range, but they *DID* feature surface turrets that you could target independently of the ship's hull to chip away at their defenses to make fighting them easier. 7:38 - This is a cross-reference between the Ion Cannon turrets featured in Empire Strikes Back protecting the escape transports, and the Ion Cannon sound and coloring used by certain fighters (Y and B-Wings in X-Wing and Assault Gunboats and TIE Defenders in TIE Fighter) that could disable enemy ships without blowing them up.)
@emilytanoАй бұрын
their attention to detail seems INCREDIBLE!! i definitely want to play the game now 😂😊
@torinslik6577Ай бұрын
I almost lost it with joy at 3:56 with the briefing room. XD You are mostly correct with the three rectangles above your targeting crosshairs. One of them indeed was when a warhead was locking onto you. It would blink yellow/orange, then turn solid red when you were locked. The second indicated weather or not a starfighter was shooting at you, and the final was if a capital ship was shooting at you. X-Wing only had two warheads: concussion missiles, only equipable by the A-Wing, and Proton Torpedoes, which you got on the X,Y, and B-Wings. The attention to detail in this animation is incredible, and I have to watch it every time it shows up on my feed.

The animation was clearly made by someone who played the TIE-Fighter game from the 90s. There are lots of little easter eggs that call back to this. From the mission briefing room to the cockpit layout. At 4:50 the rebels made a desperate attempt to disable the interdictor cruiser that kept them from fleeing into hyperspace. The empire had both surprise and superior firepower on their side in this battle. Sadly space sims died off after the 90s.

This actually feels like a mission from one of the X-Wing games. Obviously not the visual style, but the chaos of space combat. I've played all of them, and X-Wing Alliance quadrupled the number of vehicles the engine could handle at a time, up to 96 IIRC. All the screens and sounds were there when you were in the cockpit. Battles got absolutely wild, and capital ships would drop in mid-mission to change mission objectives entirely. An ambush raid on a cargo train would turn into a desperate escape, usually having to knock out an Interdictor in the process.

It's funny the Tie Fighter game sound effects hold up. Really sound cards in 94 where a bit limited. Guess kind of fun fact about Tie Fighter though. It was part of a series. The first game was called X-Wing where you're a rebel piloting X-Wings A-Wings and Y-Wings that leads up to the Death Star mission. Then it went on to B-Wing and finally Tie Fighter I believe. But the cool thing about X-Wing is they had a guide that had a whole story about a rebel pilot by the name of Keyan Farlander who was at the Battle of Yavin and was the Y-Wing pilot flying away from the Death Star before it exploded. It was cool they went through that much effort for just a guide. Also made that book over 400 pages long but it's crazy effort.
