I’m currently using Fishermen’s Wool (100% Wool) by Lion Brand for a vest, and I’m really liking it. There is a smell to it which I think is just the wooliness. It’s about $11 for over 400 yards of worsted weight yarn, which is not bad at all, especially with coupons and sells at big box stores.

I ordered a bunch of this yarn. When it arrived it literally smelled like a barnyard that still had sheep 💩 in it. My cats were all over it. It was disgusting. Beware of a lack of quality control with this stuff.

I believe it is made in Turkey like most of Lion Brand yarns. I wonder how their Local line of 100% wool from USA is $16 for less than 150 yd but Turkish wool is so cheap. Even less processed USA wool is more sustainable and one would think better for business.
@radRadiolarian
@radRadiolarian 2 ай бұрын
@@youkokun I believe it's way cheaper because they don't really process the wool all that much

The smell is lanolin, back when men fished on boats before waterproof synthetic fibers, they only washed the wool and did not scour it to remove the lanolin. It made the wool more water resistant, hence the name fishermen’s yarn. The fisherman’s sweaters knit with this type of yarn are called Gansey’s.

Thank you for this beautiful list, and the amazing projects. I'd add Berroco Comfort for synthetics, and Berroco Vintage and Berroco remix for blended yarns. They are a very high quolity, nice range of colors and nice price, The new Berroco vintage sock - is just an amazing sock yarn for 11.5$. Also the Northampton by Valley Yarn (webs) 100% wool, very soft, makes beautiful projects, and has a nice color range. Above the price range but still financially a good bargain is Malabrigo Arroyo, which is 20$, but for 100 gr you get 335 yards of beautiful, soft, hand-dyed DK (they call it sport, but it's definitely not), so for 4-5 skeins you get the most beautiful adult sweater.

I would love a video like this for more midrange yarns (think Malabrigo rios prices). I find myself so attracted to indie dyers, but they're so expensive. Malabrigo Rios is a really comfortable place for me - I can spend a bit more and there's really cool variety of solid colors and variegated at a price point that's easier to swallow

Ooo! Yeah, That could be good too! I'd just need to try more myself as I mostly use budget friendly or the occasional spoil myself indie yarn. Lol

I would recommend Plymouth encore. It comes in a great color range and washes well. I recommended it to a friend who was nervous about buying expensive yarn for her first sweater and she loved the results.

For Cotton I like 24/7 by Lionbrand ,I wait for sales or order from Mary Maxim where its 5.99. For a really nice baby gift stuffed bunny or bear ,I use Berroco Modern Cotton ,Its 16 $ in Canada but it only takes 1 skein. There are some really good acrylic yarns out there now, real wool yarn is just too expensive now.

this is a year later... kind of happy to have found this... I have been searching in various yarn shops and found that Michael's has a great in the middle price range. I am currently loving the Carron Cake collection, some acrylic, some cotton, some polyester, and some blends. they even have budget friendly wools, but no higher end natural fibers like alpaca

Yeah Michaels can have some good options especially if you use coupons or wait for their sales. Also keep an eye on the websites of the actual yarn companies. A lot of times they also have sales!

Great video! Very informative. I am a fan of the Holst Garn Supersoft, which is very much YMMV. Love the colors, and if you buy in 500g cones, the price goes down. I usually hold it double, like for the sweater I'm currently making.

I knit a sweater with Luxe Merino by Loops and Threads (55% Superwash merino/ 45% acrylic) It sells at Michael's for $9.99 for 410 yd/150g. It is soft and is holding up with wear, no pilling or fuzzing. The only thing is there are limited color options.

Great episode! A yarn I really like is berocco’s remix light - great summer yarn, and while it retails for approx $13USD you get over 400yds of DK weight yarn in each ball. Really great value for money!

For a fingering weight yarn, cascade 220 is amazing, the non superwash is I think around $5 a skein? And it’s surprisingly soft for an untreated wool!

Great list! I love Knit Picks Wool of the Andes, but unfortunately, it is too itchy on my chest and neck. I love it for hats and mittens though! I love Paton Kroy for socks - a good work horse yarn. Thank you for sharing!

Yeah, so far wool of the Andes has been used for accessories and a cardigan. Things not against my chest. Lol But you can also always wear a high tank under. That's what I do for those more rustic sweaters!

Today was the first time I have watched your videos .While you may know a lot about yarn you are very mistaken that other countries have more budget friendly yarns because of having more sheep, alpacas and other fiber animals along with more mills than the United States. There are MANY breeders and farms of all the fiber animals including sheep, goats, rabbits, alpacas and etc. We also have MANY mills with more opening all the time. I think you have a little researching to do about what is available and the costs in the US. Many of those of us that spin also ship wonderful raw fibers from other countries. Not because the fiber isn't available here but because the same sheep breed fibers varies between countries. There are exceptions to the rule as to what breeds are available to import but we can even get the Very Rare breed fibers. We are not lacking in the US by any means we are comparable to other countries in the number of animals and fibers available.

Hello! Thanks for watching! I may be mistaken about how many we have, but it has been my understanding that we pale in comparison to Europe, Asia, and Australia as far as our wool production goes. I have heard we are getting more mills though! That is awesome. I even got a new yarn from Knit picks that has US sheep wool in it that was lovely and more budget friendly than some of the high end wools. I do feel though that even with a lot of sheep and mills here, in general it still costs more here and is less readily available, or maybe it is just the companies I am exposed to? This is definitely a subject I want to continue leaning more about as I WAY prefer supporting local, but also have a budget. If you have any recourses on the growing of the US wool industry I would LOVE to look into it more! Thanks for taking the time to comment and push me to learn more! Have a beautiful day. :D

I'm trying to figure out why you even have a separate Alpaca category, when the only yarn in it IS in fact a blend. I figured maybe the blend category was more even than 70/30, but there was a 70/30 in the blend category. Some good yarns to be sure, but the Alpaca category wasn't technically valid.
@denimandrain
@denimandrain 10 ай бұрын
I had an alpaca category because I wanted to! Love alpaca! Also because it was a 77/23 it technically was more that the 70/30, the one in blends was right at that mark so it went there. Just a fun video I wasn't too overly concerned with being super technical with the percentages. Lol I agree, there are lots of good yarns though! 😄
