Coming back to this video again for ideas on what to read next bc so many of these authors are on my tbr, so thanks for that! Also, I actually loved Ruthless Vows when I read it, but I think it was a right time, right place kind of situation. I read Divine Rivals and Ruthless Vows back to back within a few days while I was at the beach in Massachusetts and it was kind of hazy and cold and dreamy and magical and it just made the books feel even more magical to me. I feel like Rebecca Ross writes about love and longing and loss in a way that really resonates with me. Maybe it would have been different in another setting, but I loved my experience with both of those books.

Oh my goodness, talk about apt timing with Divine Rivals/Ruthless Vows! I devoured Divine Rivals for the first time last week and I immediately started Ruthless Vows. I’m about 85% done with it, but it has definitely taken me longer to read than the first book did. We’ll see how the ending goes. I can’t say I’m disappointed-I generally have enjoyed it-but compared to Divine Rivals, it doesn’t hit quite the same.

19:04 i was so let down by ruthless vows it was honestly insane!! idk what you did or didnt like about the book but personally i thought shifting the focus away from the romance to the external conflict really flattened the whole thing. the backdrop of the war in divine rivals and the tidbits we got about it were really interesting but the way she expanded on it in ruthless vows was...honestly it was stupid lol. i thought introducing a subplot about a movement of people who thought both gods were bad but then making one side out to be kind of cartoonishly evil and the other completely, irrefutably good despite introducing the fact that she had like...killed all the other gods to get their power them was insane?? i was baffled by how one dimensional it got lol

@thelittleASMRdoge Ай бұрын
For me it was the fact that the decisions that the characters made made no sense. Like, you think the love of your life, your husband, is dead, and then you see him and you are ok with walking away? And then the letters that they write to each other feel so off! Like what is happening?? The first book was so incredibly well written and this one feels like fan fiction!! I really didn't understand it.

Becky Chambers is one of my favorite authors, but not for a Psalm of the Wildbuilt! (I agree with what you said, I though it was fine, but it just didn't really hit for me either) She also has a 4 book series set in space, the first one is The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet! It reminded me of the murderbot diaries when I first read it, but maybe that's just because they're both set in space. Loved to hear your thoughts in this video, as always!

The series actually has two full length novels in addition to the 5 novellas. If you've only read book 1 you haven't even met one of the best characters of the series yet! OH you've also gotta try the audiobooks narrated by Kevin R. Free they're fantastic and I didn't even like audiobooks prior to hearing them! I find this so interesting, because I don't have an auto-buy author at all. I have some that I love and I will absolutely read what they write... as long as it's similar to what I've read from them before. I think Leigh Bardugo or C.S.Pacat are probably closest to auto-read at least, but only if it's the grishaverse (because I’m already attached to all of that) or I know my heart is going to hurt while reading (because the emotions are the exact kind of pining I want to read). And even with them I could totally wait a few weeks or month before I pick up the book, because I'm really in no rush at all, so it's always really fascinating to hear about how people do have an author (or multiple) they like so much that they’d just immediately buy a book ^^

i think the problem with Ruthless Vows was that it felt like a COMPLETELY different book. Divine Rivals was more introspective and had the build up to Iris and Kitt getting together. and then Ruthless Vows was almost... full action? constantly? (from what i remember, its been a while since i read it and i struggled to get through it) also that ending to divine rivals pissed me off so hard lol. that's my LEAST favorite trope. I agree about ruthless vow. I loved and devoured Divine Rivals but dnf'ed Ruthless Vows. She's still auto buy for me because of her adult duology though!

Wow, didn't expect this reaction ruthless vows. It took me a month to get through divine rivals, then DEVOURED rutthless vows in like...a day? But I do like action in my books, and it felt like all that build up was finally worth it 😂

My auto-buy author is Taylor Jenkins Reid. I don't think any of her books would rank as favourites for me, except the audiobook for Daisy Jones & The Six, due to the great story and amazing performance by the cast. I have yet read to read a book from her that completely missed the mark - although I still have a couple of her earlier works I have yet to read, I'm saving those for a rainy day and when I think it's been too long between her book releases.

Ruta Septys is definitely my consistent auto buy author. I loved both books in What A River Knows 😭. It’s def not for everyone but as someone who is very much not a regular middle grade reader I really enjoyed it. I do agree that plot does get a bit slow at times and I never like when authors kinda decide last minute to add a new character’s POV, but I though the concept was so unique and idk I felt like the maturity level matched the age pretty well. I would have probably loved the books even more if I read them between 16 and 19. I would like to know your more specific thoughts on the plot, writing style, and characters since I read each book within a day. Maybe do a long video on it?

Cari! Have you heard of R. Raeta? She’s the author of the Peaches & Honey duology, which is an immortal’s incredibly beautiful and heart breaking journey through the centuries and a story on what it means to be human. It’s what I wished The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue *was* but isn’t. Definitely a new auto-buy author for me. Along with Kelly Andrew and Tahereh Mafi 🖤

Rebecca Ross stays up as an auto buy author only because how much I loved A River Enchanted. Divine Rivals was fine and I still haven’t read Ruthless Vows because I don’t want to be disappointed even though I know I will be. A River Enchanted just holds such a special place in my heart that I will immediately read whatever she releases next

Emily St. John Mandel is my must buy! She has mentioned that the book she is connecting with her new novel is Lola Quartet, the only book I don't own so both will be going in the bag. Agreed on Ruthless Vows! I loved the letters and dialogue in Divine Rivals and book 2 just didn't have it.

When I was younger (and read voraciously) I definitely had several auto buy authors. Seeing this video made me realise I no longer have any. I either get recs from booktubers, ask friends or walk into the bookshop and pick up whatever has the best cover and 1st page 😂

i think what i hated most about ruthless vows was the arc of iris’s brother, i just felt like so much of what he did felt wrong somehow? and then his ending was like a stab in the heart, especially from what we learn in the first book, like are you for real rebecca ross?
