Wow, she plays the part of the thirds etude at 16:28 with so much control. She doesn't let the right hand overpower the soft melody in the left hand. Amazing! That's my favourite part of the etude

+Piano Music Certainly should have been, but Alas! was not. I believe these competitions are highly political and likely "rigged" at least to a certain extent. They'd HAVE to be for I have yet to hear a "bad" pianist in any of these competitions. I've studied music for 66 years, and was a very good pianist myself. I've played every one of these Chopin pieces at one time or another, but never under such grueling, demanding conditions. The young artists today are phenomenally gifted and superbly trained. I stand in awe of their achievements. May God bless every one of them with long life filled with much success and fulfillment.

28:53 i like that she respects the natural flow of this melody. i'd imagine many pianists would want to phrase it this way, but not many can play or control literally 8 octaves within 1 second

I actually like to play it more intense, as well as most of that part. The climax always gets me, and I instantly remember Horowitz's accent, the chaotic despair that flows into the transition and finally starts the relaxing valse. For me, that part must sound like a burst. Only after these fast octaves section I calm down and prepare myself to the transition, raising the dynamics again on the last octave part.

I just watched Tiffany to joy and tears, in the most overwhelmingly beautiful Chopin performance that I have ever heard her play. She has moved to a point in her mastery of the piano where she is both an absolute poet and technical master of the piano. In my 83 years I have never heard another pianist achieve this in such a wondrous combination. She has it all; an incomparable lyrical singing tone and fantastic technical wizardry . The entire program was highlighted by the Ballade in G minor. What grace! What poetry! What drama! What ease of technical artisrty! She blew me way totally sparing nothing. I have never heard such a gorgeous rendition. It's as if I was listening to Maria Callas, Arthur Rubinstein and Vladimir Horowitz all channelling through the person of Tiffany. Her performance was an hommage to the eternal spirit of Chopin. Stanley Taub

There are also other very good contenders in this competition such as Aristo Sham, Aimi Kobayashi and Annie Zhou. George Li is not entering the Chopin competition in Warsaw, Poland because of invitations by the greatest orchestras and conductors. He already has established a great career.

You're a superb player in every regard, Tiffany, I've been listening to some of your other KZbin offerings for quite some time, and admire you greatly. I don't believe i've ever heard anyone play these Chopin Etudes more beautifully or with better tone and technical control. Opus 2 #6 is truly extraordinary. I've never heard a more musical performance. I greatly admired your Schumann Carnaval too, and am happy to see you are every bit as at home in the Chopin repertory. God bless you, and may you have a long and happy career enjoying the great talent you've been given.

op 25 (sic) no. 6 - actually quite a few bum notes @ 16:35, thumb from whites to whites not speaking as it should. no place for bum notes. Poon is an awesome pianist and will probably not need the competition win to make her mark, though it would've helped.

I dont think Chopin is exactly her best style. She performs academically with a great technique, clean, doog dynamic range.. but as a temperament I dont think its exactly Chopin. Very good pianist but not the best stylish performance. Considering she is only 18 thats great strong accomplishment..

Tiffany Poon plays very well in this prelim, she has great technique and I love most of her interpretation. Just a quick comment for the Ballade, it had some parts which were too soft and there're also few parts which didn't flow / connect smoothly through the song (either because she stopped too long before moving to the next part or she just cut it). But for the emotion, her version is the best one I ever heard. Thanks for sharing the beautiful musics with us :)

Celeste- I agree 100%. Tiffany plays the best Chopin I've heard in a long time, and I am spoiled from listening to Cortot, Rubinstein, Van Clyburn, Barenboim and (certain vintage) Pollini. But the first three are dead, the other two very old, and life goes on! I start to think that Tiffany is one of those pianists who never make it through a contest, but surge on the stage. Did you see Gary Graffmann's interview here on YT, and what he has to say about competitions? :-)

I've listened to the performances of all the winners and the finalists. In my opinion, no one played as good as Tiffany Poon. I also noticed that all of them don't have the academic accomplishment at all, but just constantly practice the piano day after day, year after year. Although some ignorant people admired some of these piano-playing robots and even praised them as the "in born Chopinist", I believe only Tiffany Poon is going on the right track and she will undoubtedly become a great pianist. According to her website, she is an outstanding student at both Juilliard School and Columbia University, and received full scholarships ever since she attended high school. If she is not super talented, those prestigious institutes might not have awarded her with the full scholarships and named her the John Jay Scholar. Most of all, Tiffany is a remarkable pianist with exceptional artistic qualities, tremendous technique and solid academic background. Her huge and widely varied repertoire has also enabled her to reach out to an enormously wide range of audiences. Because of her unique academic background as well as art and culture accomplishment, it greatly enhances her interpretation showing the poetic imagination, deep emotion and strong artistic sensibility.

We should not look at the surface to make conclusions. Posting the scores online doesn't mean that Chopin Competition is fair. It was beneficial if the competitor had studied with a member of the jury or had made a connection with the jury. In fact, jurors are often accused of giving high scores to their friends' students. Although some jurors were not eligible to rate their own students, they could give very low scores to other competitors who were better than their own students. Therefore, the outstanding competitors most likely could be easily eliminated.

I doubt Tiffany Poon will be entering for any more competitions, she can make a career without them. Nevertheless, I do not understand what the judges find missing in her playing. My guess is that her conception of how pieces should be played do not conform to standard expectations. For most of what I have heard from her, her interpretations have a very natural feel to them. Some of her interpretations are unsurpassed. Listen to Liszt's étude no 10 kzbin.info/www/bejne/nF7Jf2uVjrBkfas

Unfortunately, all tickets for the Chopin Competition in October have been sold out. But if you are interested in attending the preliminary round (which will take place in April), it is possible to buy tickets tomorrow or later.

You have to be very quick with the ticket purchase. The number of orders is really huge and tickets to the main competition are literally distributed online in a few minutes

The applause and repeated curtain calls are well-deserved. Overall an excellent performance. She is still talented. Her forte is clearly her technique. Her Nocturne is good. Her Ballade is exemplary throughout but at the same time so-so here & there. I am curious to know how she would play the Ballade 10 yrs from now.

I might upset Tiffany's fans with this comment, so I do apologise from the outset. I have listened to this performance 4 times, and still couldn't bring myself to 'loving' it, despite her virtuosity, passion, and occasional depth and sophistication. I first thought it might be because of her rather serious (or some might say, 'angry') facial expression and swaying, so I just try listening without watching the video, but still that does not help. But why? Am I the only one who thinks that her style of playing is at times 'bombastic' and 'erratic'? her sudden change of tempo and intonation no doubt give an exciting 'drama' for excitable listeners, but to me it is as if she's taking us on a roller-coaster--you enjoy the excitement of the moment, but in the process have lost sight of the beautiful scenery surrounding you and the 'bigger picture' of the piece. Granted, her Mazurka is beautifully and cleanly executed, and so is some parts of her nocturne and ballade. No doubt this girl is hugely gifted and will most likely be one of this edition's prizewinners, but I fear that she might be the victim of her own virtuosity and uninhibited passion. I know that many people would disagree with me, but personally, I'd prefer to see a little more 'finesse' and coherence in her playing. That said, I also know that, in the public eye, she will be one of this edition's most favourite competitors, and rightly so. Looking forwards to seeing her in October :)

Sun Thathong Sun - she adds dynamic range and has mastered the action of the Steinway piano. There is nothing bombastic or erratic about her playing. Quite the opposite; a natural musicality is present, clear comprehension of lyrical writing in Chopin's scores, appropriate press and release of the damper pedal. Maybe your little PC speakers overload.

tj roxas I know she is feeling the music and she is a great player. I had to look away or close my eyes when listening to her. Her head jerking motion interrupted the phases. Maybe it's just me. If I am a man I would be more enjoying looking at her.

Sun Thathong She is a very good pianist - but frankly I found her interpretation of the G Min Ballad very unsatisfying....there were passages of expressive beauty - but it didn't have an overarching musical logic - in spite of being very textbook correct - at a very crucial level, it failed for me....

Agree. She plays the best Chopin I've heard in a long time, and is on her way to become a renowned pianist right now. She has her own KZbin channel, and caters mostly to young people. Her opinions are very interesting.

The first two parts must be incredibly difficult to play. Not because it's required to play at a fast tempo, but it's delicacy requires a high degree of patience to hit the key at just the right moment after a prolonged delay.
