This is a great performance. You rarely hear this etude played with such sense of the singing qualities of the music. And the tempo is quite right, not too fast, not too slow, she just lets the music take its time.

Nor me - I've always known it as "The Harp". And I have no idea how anyone has judged it "most unknown". I would argue the 3 etudes that were published without opus number as "Trois nouvelles études" are in fact the most unknown as they are rarely recorded or performed in concert...

i wonder how the judging would be, if a contestant only picks the least played pieces for all his or her repertoire. We all know like 10-1, 10-4, 10-8, winterwind, etc are some of the most commonly picked by all contestants, so what if a contestant only picks the ones that are seldomly picked? lol

And Chopin of all guys .... ??? The guy would have hated that his music be attached to such egotistical competitive nonsense. He suffered through all that music just to have us idiots lose it’s true beauty and attach money, esteem and popularity to it. His is a universal communication and here we are being picky about something we didn’t create and pretending like he was our best friend and knew exactly how his compositions should be played. Humans Smh ....🤦🏾‍♂️

I don't see why there shouldn't be an avenue for musicians to compete with one another with the pieces they spend hundreds of hours on. They do recitals, they do all the other things you expect of them. This is a way to find a different enjoyment for their pleasure, more so than the listeners.

@@_cat_0w0 of course it is, but she's a world class pianist, in the first round there were around 80 pianist, in the second there are around 40, the third around 20 and around 10 in the final, it was just unfair. Maybe the juror looked so much potential in her to be in a competition, because they knew she was capable to achieve such popularity by her own. Because i don't find any musical reason to be kicked out since first stage among 80 pianist where surely there were worst performances than hers.

@@MrArturoPM of course there were worse performances, but there just weren't enough worse performances for her to pass. She's good but if you compare her to the winner of that year, Seong-jin Cho, you can see a clear difference in musical and technical ability. I think she was eliminated from first stage because I think she could have improved her phrasing. I also feel that there was not enough stamina or intensity at times. There was also a muddy rhythm in Etude op 10 no 4. There was not as much feeling as her 2017 recording. Aimi’s Etude op 10 no 4 was better.

@ynsmdd8678
@ynsmdd8678 4 жыл бұрын

We should not look at the surface to make conclusions. Posting the scores online doesn't mean that Chopin Competition is fair. It was beneficial if the competitor had studied with a member of the jury or had made a connection with the jury. In fact, jurors are often accused of giving high scores to their friends' students. Although some jurors were not eligible to rate their own students, they could give very low scores to other competitors who were better than their own students. Therefore, the outstanding competitors most likely could be easily eliminated.

Why Tiffany Poon was eliminated at Stage 1? There are some political reasons: 1. Tiffany played much better than most of the jurors. In order to retain their dominant position in the classical field, the jurors had to eliminate Tiffany at the very beginning of the competition (Stage 1) and remain those competitors with the average level at the competition. For the past years, we couldn't see any Chopin Competition winner has become more famous than the jurors. 2. Tiffany was outstanding and too popular. If she was allowed to advance and play more rounds, she would give a very good impression to more audience. The audience would witness that she was one of the best among the competitors. Therefore, if she was not awarded any prize, it might cause riots. 3. Among the jury, there was a Chinese juror whose career is in his down trend and is seriously threatened by Lang Lang and Yuja Wang. Don't you think that he was foolish enough to let another Chinese star rise and ruin his career? 4. There was no Chinese competitor advanced to the Final Stage because there was a Vietnamese juror whose country had arose anti-Chinese protests several months ago.

+QualityMusic It is not just the jurors who did not support Tiffany Poon but also the Polish audience did not. Kate Liu (Bronze medal) had wide popular support from the Polish public and she received the highest number of votes cast by listeners of the Second Program of the Polish Radio, and won the contest "My Chopin" In the opinion of listeners of the Program, she was the best pianist of the Chopin Competition. As someone else has written on youtube "[Poon's] style of playing is at times 'bombastic' and 'erratic' -her sudden change of tempo and intonation no doubt give an exciting 'drama' for excitable listeners, but to me it is as if she's taking us on a roller-coaster-" I think Poon's playing lacks the finesse and subtlety of Kate Liu who is the only other pianist of the competition I have much listened to .So I think Poon's elimination was justfied.

+ComtedeMonteC I've read many of your malicious comments about Tiffany Poon in other places too. You spent a great deal of your time judging and criticizing her in many ways. Apparently, you're jealous of her! You kept using the winners to attack Tiffany. But I've never seen you appreciate any of their performances in the beginning. And now, you quoted a negative comment posted by a huge fan of a competitor so as to validate your point. You obviously have no ear for music!! Sadly, you're ignorant enough to agree with the decision made by the jury. Are you aware that some of the jurors can't even play the piano very well, but qualified to judge in the competition? One of the examples is Yundi Li, who broke down in Seoul last month during the first movement of Chopin Concerto No.1.
