Melissa was my vocal coach. I'm a good singer for life because of her. She and her mother taught me how to harmonize and gave me a foundation as a musician. Amazing and talented people. Her mother Carly didn't play games though.

Is Melissa Moultrie related to Emilie Moultrie? Emilie won first place on Star Search in 1986. She was also an actress in "The Greatest American Hero," and she played a guest appearance on "Small Wonder" as a girl who stuttered. Anyway, the last name isn't that common, so I had to ask. 🙂

@disneylandbible thank you for shedding light on what became of Melissa and most importantly why. I actually sang with her and Emily in what was the professional group at Moultrie Studios for a short time. This was over 23 years ago. I believe we were going to be called "Power". At any rate, what many people fail to realize is that "show biz" is not for everyone. Melissa was blessed with one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard, but obviously her soul called her to something else

Debbie Gibson auditioned 11 times and kept getting a no to be on the show. so she just kept pressing on and ended up with a recording contract at 16 and then went on to selling millions of albums and her 1st album with 4 top 5 hits (which one of them was 1) and then she became the youngest artist in history to write,produce and perform #1 and she stills holds that record as the only female to do so.

In the 80s it was pop, in the late 80s/early 90s it was ballads, and now she is a country music artist. Also, if Melissa didn't want to be famous as people here say, then why go on a show like Star Search. If you don't want noteriaty and attention, don't go and put yourself in the lime light.

They both were great. But Melissa has that little girl on a stage show sound. Tiffany always had an older tone and sound to her voice. Even when you watch back older interviews she did in 87-88 her voice has a more mature sound to it. Surprised she kind of just faded away from the mainstream with such a natural singing voice.

If I remember her interview with Ed McMahon and the star search people clearly back around the time that the above show was filmed, Tiffany had told her interviewers that she initially had planned on becoming a country music singer, but later she decided that she wanted to become a rock artist.

It's a pity that Tiffany lost, but to be fair, Melissa wasn't bad, but to me she just didn't put enough in to it. If she had it, why not show it. Tiffany started out soft, but then she opened those pipes of hers, and let it go and to me finished on a high note. Melissa didn't show what she had till the very end, on one final note. Melissa sounded like a kid, Tiffany sounded more like an adult. Also, Tiffany is still popular today, she actually changes her style to what is popular currently

@Keezie27 I'm not saying that Melissa was necessarily a better singer than Tiffany. I'm just saying that solely based on these 2 performances, Melissa came across as the singer with the stronger voice and clearly deserved to win that night. Doesn’t really matter though as Tiffany went on to have a much better career. Ironic that most of the singers who became really big stars after appearing on Star Search actually lost when on the show. i.e. Britney, Justin, Christina, Aaliyah, etc…

Tiffany was robbed -- she's clearly the better choice here. The first girl, Melissa, DOES have a good voice, and she picked an amazing song with, "Home," but her PERFORMANCE of it, for the most part, is just so fake- and pageant-looking. I hate it when young performers try to act older than their youth allows them to be. If you're not there yet in years, you're not there. Just be the kid that you're supposed to be, and be the best you can be with that. Tiffany on the other hand conversely seems mature beyond her years (some people DO have that, but it has to be natural and not fake-looking). Tiffany's PERFORMANCE is SO much better -- VERY seasoned and classic (can't believe she's only twelve). Only towards the end, when Tiffany first moved upstage, did I think she overdid it on some of her vocals. But her final notes were rightly strong and great.
@Keezie27
@Keezie27 13 жыл бұрын
@Leveractionjake I agree. I don't know why anyone has to be accused of being a biased Tiffany fan because some say her voice is better. Her voice is better than Melissa's. Tiffany would have probably been better off picking a different song though, I don't think that was the best song choice for her.

@PokeyVision I disagree. Tiffany is a much stronger vocalist than Melissa. I think Melissa chose a stronger song to sing, but Tiffany clearly has a much more powerful voice. She's a great vocalist. Melissa however put on a better performance that night, she connected better with the song and the audience, although I still think her voice was a little weak. I can see why she won, but she is not a better singer than Tiffany. No way.
