Old Trafford has been neglected. Literally. For years the home of Manchester United, “The Theatre of Dreams” has been allowed to deteriorate.
From leaking roofs to rodents on the pitch and dodgy WiFi. Old Trafford needs an upgrade.
Why has it been allowed to happen? How much would it cost to repair?

Update: On the 7th May, in a letter to Manchester United fans, Joel Glazer wrote: "We recognise that we will need to significantly increase investment in Old Trafford and our training complex to ensure that the club’s facilities remain among the best in Europe. As part of this, we will consult with fans on investments related to the stadium and the matchday experience."

Im a United fan and walk past old Trafford everyday on my way to work and it’s honestly sad to see the state of the stadium and the surrounding area, meanwhile on the other side of Manchester, city have redeveloped the whole area, even building affordable housing for the community, shows what can be done what can be done when your owners actually care

@tcol97

@@Monaleenian that has no relevance at all to what I wrote, and even if it did it just proves my point even more, why isn’t this being reinvested in the area around the stadium or the actual stadium itself? Which is what city have been consistently for about 10 years. I doubt you’ve ever been to Manchester anyway if United’s matchday revenue is your only take away from this video because if you’d ever stepped foot into old Trafford you’d know it’s literally falling apart and we’re in big danger of getting left behind by other clubs

I live in Stretford, near Old Trafford, I worked at the ground in 1989 for nearly a year in the executive suite, at the time it was the best ground in England with the best corporate facilities, even then though there was a rodent problem, I remember the local council at Trafford council inspecting the kitchens in the main stand (where the executive suite was).... Today Old Trafford is in a sorry state, a cramped ground with terrible facilities, only 3 seasons ago an elderly gentleman died after falling down the exit during a game against City, if you happen to be sat at the back of any of the 3 big stands, you have trouble seeing the whole pitch, especially the goal at the opposite end, in comparison to City's, Arsenal's & Tottenham's new grounds, it's decades behind.... I'm just glad I'm not a United supporter! I don't think I'd cope with such lacklustre facilities!.

Lets not forget the absolute farce that was the disability section... behind the goals under the away fans, in an area where some seats are literally at ground level below the pitch. Lets put our most vulnerable fans in area where they are more likely to get stray shots (mainly from fred) in the face, flares or other things dropped on them from away fans and with a limited view of the pitch. Luckily they are now changing this and moving to the back of the stretford end. It reinforced the view that people in charge aint got a scooby doo.

I took my son to watch a game at Old Trafford 2 yrs ago. We were sat right at the very back of the quadrant. United scored at the opposite end of the pitch where we were and, incredibly, I had to duck down to see the ball go in the net because the sloping roof was obscuring part of the goal! A good 3rd of the stadium you couldn't see because the roof was hiding it. We were all shocked by how shabby the exterior of the stadium was also looking, rust and flaking paint on the white(ish) steel on the roof. There are far worse stadiums of course but this is Manchester United who like to call themselves the biggest club in the world, well if they are they really need to act like it. It will be interesting what kind of a transfer window Utd have this summer, don't get the players the team needs then I can see the hardcore fans really venting their frustration.

People have got short memories: LFC were close to going into administration under H&G, who were worse than the Glazers. The big difference is LFC got lucky in the end that they couldn't afford to keep hold of the club and Hicks couldn't raise the finances to buy out Gillet, which led to the banks stepping in and forcing through a sale to FSG. Also, Utd fans were spoilt under Edwards, Gill & Sir Alex whilst Moores & Parry let LFC stagnate. I would say LFC fans have had it far tougher in regard to ownership problems than Utd fans since the 90s.

What I find strange is the Glazers as bucks owners helped Kroenke move the Rans from St Louis to LA on the proviso he would finance a new stadium, SOFI is the crown jewel of stadiums and if Covid haven’t happened as a facility would of been self sufficient in less than 10years. A new stadium could do that for United and if it had a roof could easily be a 52 week a year business for additional revenue. Space isn’t an issue as the glazers have land banked everything around OT, my understanding is the club own everything from just past Hotel Football up to and including the world freight depot, plus land near the quays. There are no excuses for not having a 90,000 seater stadium because United could fill it, and despite all the noodle deals they have actually done very little to drive additional income from club assets such as MUTV, the women’s team commercial rights etc. The club is barely moving under the current ownership let alone not being up to the level of City, Liverpool, Bayern, Juve on the pitch. Also the club isn’t worth £3bl no chance, it’s been ran like an Avon round for 16years

Man Utd's Old Trafford stadium that a bit if TLC won't cure. All it needs is the Upgrade of the Sir Bobby Charlton's Stand with a 2nd tier to complete the original design & the removal of the 3rd tier of the Sir Alex Ferguson's Stand & replaced by TV Screens for all 4 corners. We also want a levelled new Roof + modern refurbishment of the rest of the stadium to warrant a 90K capacity in comfort. SBCS 25K + SAFS 25K + SES 20K + ES 20K = 90K. Take Note: The Stadium Expansion should not exceed the rail track. Old Trafford known as 'The Theatre of Dreams' unique in style is the Super Bowl of stadiums & is potentially The best Stadium in the country, possibly the world.

truth is it would pay for itself despite selling out every game united still have well over 100.000 on the waiting list for season tickets. they could build a 120.000 seat stadium and easily sell it out that would be an extra 80 or 90 million pounds in ticket sails alone plus another 30 million pounds a year in naming rights if it costs 1 billion pounds u take out a 20 year mortgage u pay back 90 million pounds a year for 20 years 1.8 billion pounds with interest mortgage paid in full and u still make a profit every year for the first 20 years despite paying off the mortgage.

I used to take tourists on the Old Trafgord guided tour. It is a huge landmark in world football - head and shoulders above any other club stadium in england in terms of global appeal. What the Glazer's have allowed to happen is a travesty. In that time even Forest's owners have painted the rust, installed big screens and planned a new stand. Refusing to invest to the point where rain is literally leaking in is borderline criminal.

I often mention this to United fans when talking about the biggest stadiums in the country. I'm a United fan, but even I cannot stand being at OT sometimes, I usually get stuck up in the North Stand unable to see a damn thing, most f the time I cannot recognise who scored. And there's usually two fans either side of me who are pretty much inside my personal space... Technically, the three of us have to change our facebook relationship statuses to 'it's complicated'. Old Trafford has the biggest capacity in the Premier League, but it's still average compared to others, which could have much bigger capacities if they placed their seating on top of each other. If Wembley had the same seating arrangement as OT, the capacity would be about 125,000.

Apart from the south stand its not that old, Sir Alex stand was only built in the the mid 90s i went in 2006 and it looked tired then the concourses were basic at best, dark and dingy with bare concrete everywere, it reminded me of Goodison park concourse which is anciant, and the leaky roofs are on the quadrents which were only built in about 2005 i imagine the previous owners cheaped out on the renovations i read they cant upgrade the South stand without moving out for a while because they would have to have machinary on the pitch The best thing would be to knock it down and build a new stadium nearby, theres loads of room behind it

Similar issues at NUFC where Ashley has even sold the club land behind the Gallowgate end for development which is the only end that could be extended. Toilet walls are filths, the whole place needs a good clean and he even changed big TVs on the concourses for tiny ones you can hardly see. Bloke is a charlatan. When we got to the stadium I was shocked by how rusty unkept and shabby old Trafford looked. I couldn’t believe the most famous team in club football played here. Especially compared to their inner city rival Man City who’s stadium is genuinely impressive despite the empty seats (it’s a joke 😂).

It would be cheaper to build a new stadium on the car park next to the Streford End, since that is large enough to build on. I'm sure the people who live in the houses on the other side of the railway would beg to differ on your statement that building up the South Stand isn't insurmountable. You would need to knock the houses down on Railway Road, parts of Partridge St, Elton St and maybe Colley St just to accommodate the stand being built over the railway. Also the council only agreed to the last expansion on condition that it wouldn't increase the road traffic around the ground and supporters would use public transport. That failed miserably on both counts.

I'm surprised that there is no mention of Old Trafford being downgraded as a European Final Venue, a UEFA Euro's venue, and FIFA WC venue ! all because it doesn't meet modern stadia requirements. Stairs too steep, seating too close, concourses too narrow, too few toilets, not enough food and drink outlets, the list is massive ! The solution is simple, build a new stadium 50 meters to the North of the present one. Or better still out near the airport, so you don't have to queue for two hours after a game to get down the Chester Road.
