The Premier League is widely regarded as the most entertaining. As Magnus Henderson writes, despite Spain’s dominance in the European competitions, it is England’s Premier League that is the most popular league in the world, thanks, in part, to their dominance of the TV market.
But how do television rights work? Let’s find out...

As an English-speaking Asian viewer, I think Premier League, in being English itself, is already a significant advantage. The whole viewing experience is unmatched against other top 5 leagues, from pre-match analysis to in-game commentary to post-match. No doubt other leagues are trying, but with English being the international language, Premier League will always have this linguistic advantage.

I seriously think this is a overrated clame and overused, any league anyone can beat anyone, that is the magic of football. Last season Benfica lost the portuguese title most likely thanks to a game at home to a result of 3-4 to Santa Clara, a team from a small Island, this season Bayern just lost for 4 goals against a average German side, Barcelona has lost to a weak Osasuna at home etc etc The most competitive professional leagues, most likely are the Brazillian league, in which truly any team is big and can beat anyone, go look how many teams have won the title last decade and compare to the EPL. Now the EPL is the one with best marketing, best conditions etc no question about that, but now saying is the most competitive, i have alot of doubts about that. realistically you think the top 6 can win the league? Doubt it.

Also English is sort of considered the whole world's lingua franca. So international broadcast of the EPL can be enjoyed slightly easier even in countries that don't have native language broadcast translators.
@justinsm
@justinsm Ай бұрын
You're absolutely right that English is widely considered the world's lingua franca, which gives the Premier League a significant advantage in international broadcasts. The ability to easily enjoy the EPL without needing translation makes it more accessible globally. However, the existence of European giants from other countries can be attributed to several factors: Historical Success: Clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Juventus have long histories of domestic and international success. Their achievements in European competitions, especially in the UEFA Champions League, have cemented their status as giants in football. Strong Domestic Leagues: The success of these clubs is also tied to the strength of their domestic leagues. La Liga, Serie A, and the Bundesliga have been competitive leagues with rich footballing traditions, producing top talent and attracting global attention. Investment and Infrastructure: Many of these clubs have benefited from significant investments in infrastructure, youth academies, and scouting networks. This has allowed them to build strong teams capable of competing at the highest level. Global Fanbase: Despite the language barrier, clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona have massive global followings. Their iconic players and brand appeal transcend language, making them popular worldwide. Cultural Influence: Football culture in countries like Spain, Italy, and Germany is deeply ingrained, with passionate fanbases and a strong footballing identity. This has helped these clubs maintain their status as giants, even in a competitive global market. Television and Media Rights: While the Premier League might have an edge due to English being widely spoken, other leagues have also capitalized on lucrative television deals and international media rights. This has helped them reach global audiences and maintain their status. Star Players: Clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, and PSG have consistently attracted some of the world's best players, further enhancing their global appeal and competitiveness. While the Premier League benefits from its linguistic advantage, the factors above have ensured that other European clubs remain giants in the football world. Their historical success, strong domestic leagues, and ability to attract top talent keep them competitive on the global stage.

@justinsm Ай бұрын
@@abuibu Your observations highlight the inherent unpredictability and drama of the Champions League, where even teams with significant resources and strong squads can face challenges. Here’s a breakdown of the scenarios you mentioned: Inter Tough Groups: Inter Milan has indeed had some challenging draws in the Champions League, and the “group of death” label can make any group seem particularly tough. Matches can be very close and outcomes can hinge on small margins, as seen with Inter’s close call against Spurs. Off Games for Top Teams: Teams like Bayern Munich, Manchester United, and PSG have occasionally had poor performances or “off” games, which doesn’t necessarily reflect their overall strength or status. These fluctuations can occur due to various factors like form, injuries, or tactical mismatches. Juventus’ Transition: Juventus, under Andrea Pirlo, did experience a transition period. A new coach often brings changes that can initially affect the team’s performance. PSG’s Form: PSG’s ability to thrash teams like Barcelona demonstrates their high potential. However, domestic form can vary, and a single loss or bad spell doesn’t diminish their overall capabilities. it would be a very challenging group, not an “easiest” one. Each of these teams has strong squads and competitive histories, making any match potentially tough. Quality of Teams: While the presence of multiple strong teams in one group can make the competition fierce, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the group is easy or straightforward. The performance in the group stages depends on various factors, including form, injuries, and tactical approaches. In essence, the unpredictability of the Champions League ensures that no group is easy or guaranteed, and even teams with strong line-ups can face difficulties.

Soooooooo when do we start talking about the English bias seeping into Tifo Football? About EPL's popularity. Just look at the media an English speaker consumes. It's all from the perspective of the EPL 90 percent of the time. Obviously the league that gets the most exposure gets more popular and hence gets more foreign TV deals. If the world language was Spanish or Italian or German, those leagues would be with most cash in flow right now. Simple as it gets.

We don’t need foreign fan viewership it’s just a bonus. Also the Spanish league pay on an individual basis Meaning there’s a pyramid. While in Germany they don’t have this they have a problem of willingly giving players cheap to the biggest teams which the epl countered lately by asking for a massive amount to make them stop and give them an advantage.

I believe that La Liga's high European ranking stems from the fact that their top sides have to put in less effort beating the down-table sides than their PL counterparts. Barcelona and RM can basically sleepwalk through lesser sides with ease, and 6-0 and 8-0 scores are commonplace. They can then concentrate their energies on UCL and the like. In the PL, the lower-level sides are much stronger, and top sides have to put more effort to gain wins. Also, there are like 6-7 "big" clubs in the PL vying for top honors, as opposed to 2 or 3 in the other leagues.

Let's face it, you'll never have Elche beating Real Madrid 7-2 and Alavés spanking Barcelona 5-1 within a week in La Liga. In the last 10 years the EPL had 5 different champions and nobody won more than twice in a row. In the last 10 years the Bundesliga had 2 different champions and Bayern won 8 in a row... In the last 10 years in La Liga they had 3 different champions with a single Atlético win other than full Real & Barca domination. In France, since the full PSG takeover in 2012 they won every single Ligue 1 title except for one (won by Monaco). Except for the 09-10 win of Inter, Serie A has been entirely dominated for 10 years by Juventus. All the major European leagues are one or at most two horse races for a decade now, except the premier league. The tempo, the passion of the fans, the international language of the commentary, the generally high level of play even among the "smaller" clubs (hence the above mentioned freak results) means the EPL is the most entertaining to watch. It has a great combination of everything: quality, excitment, unpredictability, atmosphere and drama.

Actually, most of this comment is wrong. Statistically, La Liga has been *more* competitive than the Premier League in recent years. There have been more upsets (Barcelona and Real Madrid *regularly* dropping points) whilst the top teams in England (City and Liverpool in the past few years) go entire seasons and only lose once or twice. As to the quantity of teams that dominate - over the past 10 years the Premier League has been dominated by 3 teams - Chelsea and City, and now more recently Liverpool. Arsenal and United are not what they once were and Spurs were never true title contenders. This is much the same as the big 3 in Spain (with Sevilla more recently joining the mix). If you want to go back further and include the likes of United and Arsenal then I shall simply go back further and include Valencia and Deportivo. As to title races themselves, they have been much more competitive in La Liga. In the Prem, it is a regular occurrence for a single team to run away with it (and to be able to figure out who will win between December and February). In Spain, this is not the case. The title races between the top 3 are extremely close and difficult to call. Take last season, for instance, where we all knew that Liverpool were going to win, but the title race between Real and Barça went to the penultimate game of the season (with Barcelona on top of the table until the final few games). On average, title winners in La Liga are wrapping up the league with much fewer points than their English counterparts. Where it is now common place for City and Liverpool to get into the 90, sometimes 100, point margin, the big Spanish teams are winning in the 70 and 80 point margins. This is because of the competitive nature of the league and regularity of shock results. To look at the relegation zone, more points are required, on average, in order to guarantee survival in La Liga than in the Premier League (implying a much tighter title race). Add to this the fact that it is, on average, less likely for a newly promoted team to be instantly relegated in La Liga and you realise that the league is competitive top-to-bottom because there isn’t such a big gulf in quality in Spain as there is in England. In England, you have a handful of teams who are too good for the Championship but not good enough for the Premier League. These teams often (over the course of years) straddle the two leagues until they eventually either break through or run out of the financial fire power to maintain that level. This simply doesn’t happen as frequently in Spain. Take Eibar, for instance. This is a team with a stadium capacity of 4,000 in a city of 20,000 inhabitants. In 2014 they were promoted to La Liga for the first time and due to their tiny size and lack of finances they were expected to instantly get relegated. Fast forward to 2020 and they are still in the top division, having proven themselves more than capable of competing in the highest level of world football. They have, on multiple occasions, caused big upsets (including beating Real Madrid multiple times - notably a 3-0 victory against Los Blancos at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2018/19). This, according to the stats, is much less frequent in England. Finally, it is worth talking about the more competitive nature of the 4th place and also Europa League spots in Spain. Far more Spanish teams compete for these spots than in England and (very often) it ends up being a curse. A team like Sociedad, Celta, Valencia or Getafe might get European football, but because of the added games and the highly competitive nature of La Liga, they find themselves in a relegation battle or in the bottom half of the next season, allowing for new teams to attempt to compete for Europe - maybe Bilbao, Sevilla, Levante or Betis. So, to conclude: You’re chatting rubbish mate. You’re peddling the same lies that ignorant Premier League fans always repeat. It simply isn’t true.

The competitiveness is its key selling point and its been that way for decades, even when you see seemingly unbeatable teams like City or Liverpool, someone seems to always be able to stop them. You’ll never see that in most other leagues.

6MasterWilly6 The MLS is not that big in Europe, mainly due to a lot of team’s being new, and a lot of the footballers not being household names. It’s growing in popularity though.

Leicester winning the title, aguerooooo, Gerrard slip, Last day suspense. It'll never be in another league. Not only the money or iconic moments but things like Peter drury and Jim beglin as commentators, sky sports, match of the day post match analysis is what makes epl class. We don't have messi or neymar but we do have thrills. Last season was a disaster but this season's gonna be crazy

The UEFA Champion's League is played precisely to determine which league is the best in all of Europe. Or at least to determine which is the best club in Europe, and to which country it belongs. Otherwise, there would be no point in playing it. Anyone accepts the numbers: Spain has more European trophies, both from the UCL or Europa League, than England, or Italy, Germany or France. Facts, not opinions.

The lower divisions in England are the most entertaining because anything can happen. The Premier league is dominated by a handful of clubs with maybe one surprises each year finishing in the top 6. Of course same could be said about most other top divisions.

In terms of innovative infrastructure and putting fans and ethics first over greed, Bundesliga tops any league out there. A league can generate billions in revenue and claim to be the best in the world but in the process can become soulless and overpriced for many.

If match day uncertainty is of high value then it’s always hard to beat out MLS. Their issue has always been quality because unlike most other leagues they have heavily focused on revenue sharing in all ways possible as equal as possible. Salary cap keeps teams from folding (Chivas USA mistake being the last) as is more common in Italy, England, and Spain where every couple years we see a club fold then reform; but it harms MLS in being able to spend massively on deep quality squads. On average none of the big leagues have any worthwhile uncertainty in champions and it’s only a one off match that can surprise a fan. Problem is that most European leagues don’t care for revenue sharing. PL comes closer than most but even then Champions League and Europa League harm that by increasing income disparity then add in sponsors which causes mega-clubs to grow even more as that income isn’t redistributed. European leagues are very capitalist with rich get richer mega-clubs while ironically MLS is more socialist where anyone can actually win it all. What league is the best depends on your taste. If you want to never know the winner and for it not to usually be the same 6 then zero major European leagues are for you. If you want to see the best then pick a mega-club and never worry about anything but when you play tiebreaker big clubs.

Premier League is the most popular and entertaining league. Myself from Malaysia, many are fans of English club. Sure, some are fans of Spanish clubs but doesn't come close to the popularity that is the Premier League. It's more competitive than any other European league in my opinion, just look at 2015-16 season.

The best among the top European leagues has to be the Premier League because they have more than 2 clubs with real chances of winning, right? Over the past 20 seasons, La Liga saw: 1 Atlético de Madrid title, 2 Valencia titles, 7 Real Madrid titles and 10 Barcelona titles. 4 different champions. Over the past 20 seasons, the Bundesliga saw: Stuttgart, Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg winning once each, 3 Borussia titles, and 14 Bayern titles, with Bayern winning 8 times in a row. 5 different champions. Over the past 20 seasons, the Italian Seria A saw: 1 Roma title, 2 AC Milan titles, 5 Internazionale titles, and 11 Juventus times, 9 of them being in a row (Juventus actually won 12 times, but one of these titles was found to be frauded, so no champion was awarded). 4 different champions. Over the past 20 seasons, the French Ligue 1 saw: Montpellier, Olympique de Marseille, Nantes, Lille, Monaco and Bordeaux winning 1 title each, Lyon winning 7 titles, and PSG winning another 7 times. 8 different champions. And over the past 20 seasons, the Premier League saw: Liverpool and Leicester winning once each, Arsenal winning twice, Manchester City winning 4 times, Chelsea winning 5 times, and Manchester United winning 7 times. 6 different champions. We can see how the Premier League is not that much more competitive than Ligue 1. Ligue 1 actually had 8 different champions over the last 20 seasons, and the most times the same team was a champion over the last 20 seasons is the same as the most times an English team was champion of the Premier League over the last 20 seasons. The main difference is that the Premier League never saw one single team dominating the league for lots of seasons in a row. Now let's compare that to the Brazilian league, Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, which, over the last 20 years, saw: Vasco da Gama and Atlético Paranaense won it once each, Santos, Fluminense, Flamengo and Palmeiras won it twice, Cruzeiro and São Paulo won it 3 times, and Corinthians won it 4 times. 9 different champions. The team who won it the most times over the last 20 seasons, Corinthians, won it only 4 times. The team who won it most times in a row was São Paulo, winning it in the 2006, 2007 and 2008 seasons. And now a fun fact: of all these 9 different champions, only Santos, São Paulo and Flamengo were never relegated. Fluminense was not relegated in the last 20 years, but was relegated in 1997. The other 5 teams were relegated at least once over the last 20 seasons. So, what is the BEST league? Is it the most competitive? Is it the one with the best players? Is it the one with the best team? I think a league is worthless if a single team can win it 5 times in a row. There is no fun in watching it if you already know who is gonna win.

MLS is on the come up! It has the unpredictability of the Championship, the financial stability of the Prem, some of the best presentation in the world, it's also easily accessible in terms of watching and because MLS is in English. MLS is becoming a league of choice and an exciting place to watch young South, Central and North American talent. Success stories of MLS talent becoming top European talent like Davies, Adams, McKennie, Gio Reyna and Jack Harrison are only giving the league more legitimacy and attracting young players all over to come to MLS because they know regardless of their age they will have chance to play based off ability. It's become a developmental league, with exciting football and only going to produce more and more talent. And it's only been around 25 years. Just imagine where it's going to be in another 25 😍
