One thing about Pérez is that he's evolved with the transfer market. The first galáctico project might have been a sporting disaster but the main aim was commercial success where it thrived. PSG tried it and it failed dismally. The second project was decent and honestly they did enough to win trophies but Barça was just a notch superior at the time. The current policy is great also because the young lads are not just professionals but also fans of the club which adds a bit of grit to their performance.

You can tell he loves the club with all of his heart but without Santiago we would be nothing and any true Madridista would say it like that. I'd argue that Real Madrid have always recruited young players to go alongside the 'Galactico' signings. In the famous 11/12 title-winning season, they have Benzema, Higuain, Ozil, Di Maria, Khedira, Marcelo, Varane, Callejon, Coentrao, and Granero who were all U-25. They've also signed many talented U-21 players such as Kovacic, Isco, Asensio, Theo Hernandez, Ceballos, even Ramos was signed when he was only 19. And also, I'd argue that they've toned-down the 'Galactico' policy a long time ago. I think they've only signed 2 since CR7 joined (Bale and Hazard) so I don't think this is something new either.

Something that I'd be interested in is that: Real Madrid, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool & PSG to some extent (I'm sure there are more) have all been investing strongly in youth approach and trying to get players before their peak with Rice and Bellingham both good examples. My question is has this approach changed the market so that now the most expensive a player is no longer when they are peaking but pre-peak because the club knows that if the sign at 24 on a 5 year contract the peak will occur completely with the clubs control where as if the sign at 27 they don't have as long at their peak? With all these clubs employing this strategy I wonder if we could/have already gotten to a point where peak and older players become the new value.

@CaraVerde
@CaraVerde Жыл бұрын
It's all based on their prices, actually. Nowadays, players at their peak valued excessively, imho. So I believe they still have value, but only to those who are rich and hope for some "instant" successes. Madrid isn't that kind of club. They're lucky enough to have history of titles and capable squad backing them up, so they don't desperately need anything to jump start instantaneous successes.

This strat requires a huge amount of changes. RM were extremely fortunate to have kroos modric and benzema competing and winning ucl at their age. Had Benz declined drastically a few year before, we would have had serious problems in the attack and would’ve bought and instant impact player may he be 27+. RM went through a huge phase of reconstruction after CR7’s departure, bale and then hazards failure.
@DAAllan82
@DAAllan82 Жыл бұрын
You have to look at the player agent side of things. There is a reason Haaland had a low release clause. The players realize that every cent that goes towards a transfer fee is a cent that doesn’t go towards their signing bonus. And there still is a ton of risk in signing young players. Endrick might be the next world class striker, or he might be a bust. Bellingham has looked great for Dortmund and England, but there is no telling how moving to Spain and the pressure of Madrid will effect him. A 25 year old super star is always going to command a premium because they have proven over multiple seasons to be world class.

I don’t think it’s a recent thing Madrid buying the top youngsters, they’ve been doing this for a long time. Admittedly there seems like a lot recently but they moved away from the Galatico strategy a long time ago (since the James disaster, and Hazard being an exception). They are still looking to add older more established players for the right balance (Alaba, Rudiger, Joselu for example), but they know because of their stature they can get them on a free, instead of paying the massive transfer fees.

I don't think that they've changed policies. They are still spending galactico money for players relative to age and status for example, vini Jr was bought for 40-45 mil euro, 3-4 years ago, which in relative terms is essentially paying 100-120 for a superstar. Look at Bellingham 100mil, that's more than any "galacticos" his ever paid for. They're essentially just buying "young galacticos" and tbh for young galacticos prices -tchoumeni and Bellingham 100mil each.
@Jojos25
@Jojos25 Жыл бұрын
Your calculation is incorrect. These players give their best output when they are already amortised. So accounting wise, buying them young even at a premium, equals a much lower transfer fee had they been bought later on in their careers. Madrid is willing to pay that premium because they trust that 90% of the time the player will develop correctly and increase his value, thanks to their brilliant coaches and how they screen every prospect not just for footballing talent but also mental attributes. What they do is top notch and testament to why Real Madrid is the best club in the history of this sport... Or even sports in general.

more like we are ending an entire era of football Messi and Ronaldo spanned essentially 20 years of football (you can throw hazard and Neymar in there as well as they were the closest to that peak). Nobody got the same height or were truly able to shine in those 20 years. Remember the only player to get a Ballon d'or in their prime was Modric and just now it was Benzema. So even players like de Bruyne and Bruno are at the tail end of their career, why would anyone build around that? Most 26 year olds aren't really that good in the game rn. So all that's left is the younger stars. Flo saw this coming and planned accordingly.

Many of these youngsters Madrid signed in recent years refused more lucrative offers from other big clubs because they dreamed of playing for Madrid. Without that pull these players would not have come. Secondly Calafat's role within the club. While he is technically a scout his primary role is not scouting. He is more of a deal maker and facilitator. His biggest value lies in forging bonds with big prospects and their entourage long before a deal is struck, sometimes years in advance. That way when the time to sign comes and clubs from all over put in an offer RM already has a very personal relationship with these players, their families and agents, giving them an advantage. He's a salesman through and through. Building relationships and selling the club and their project to the biggest talents.

Real Madrid has a long history of recruiting great players, with Jude Bellingham the latest example. Jude signed for them over MCFC who just won the treble and could/would offer higher salary as well. If he was willing to go to PSG he would easily earn twice the money he is getting at Real. Hats off to Perez and his team.

When Barça adopted Real’s tranfer strategy of buying expensive and established players (going bankrupt in the process), Real went the Barça way, of buying young talents at not too exorbitant prices (with the exception of Bellingham). They’ve successfully rebuilt their attack (except striker) and midfield without spending too much money compared to Barça, Man City, Man Utd., Chelsea, etc. Kudos to Papa Perez for learning from Hazard’s transfer.

Barcelona never adopted Madrids galactico policy, it was merely 2 seasons of reckless spending by an incompetent president and his board. You're either deliberately misrepresenting Barcelona or you're actually misinformed. And Barcelona have never actually bought young rising players in the same way Madrid are doing, with the exception of a few and unrelated cases. They have signed 12 to 15 year old academy players with the hope to integrate them into the academy and style of play, it's not the same thing.

It might seem more obvious the way that Real are working right now, but it's worth pointing out that even during the Galacticos era (2001-5) they weren't signing *old* players, in fact in over 2 decades as club president, Perez has only signed one 30÷ player (Carvalho, because Mourinho insisted on him)
@harukrentz435

Figo was 28, Zidane was 29, Beckham was 28 when Real Madrid bought them. They were old players by early 2000's standard as most players at that time declined rapidly when they hit 30. Then in 2006 they bought many oldies, Emerson, Cannavaro, and Ruud v. Nistelrooy (all were in their 30s). I think the youth policy they are enacting today is risky considering the seniors are too old (modric, kroos) or leaving (benzema).

This is not entirely true. Real Madrid's policy was the 'Zidanes y Pavones' where the Pavons were young players who could grow into the team next to the superstars. The Galacticos are still there - they'd have Mbappe by now if things had gone according to plan. Bellingham is as much a Galactico as Haaland, certainly not a punt on youth as Vinicius, Rodrygo, Reinier or Endrick could be regarded. Hazard would also be starring if he hadn't've banjaxed himself. You also forget Robinho was an attempt to buy Neymar before he became Neymar. Mesut Ozil was signed for cheap at 21, Varane was signed at 18, Casemiro at 21, Isco at 21. James Rodriguez was signed for 75M euro. Odegaard, Drenthe, Asensio... The big change has been the addition of Juni Calafat and the Brazilian players brought in. Take them out and the transfer policy hasn't changed too much. I would also add that the Brazilian Perez rued missing out on who went on to be worth a fortune and inspire his signing of Brazilian talent wasn't Neymar as much as Kaka.

Having experience in the structure of the team like Courtouis, Alaba, Mordric, Nacho, Cavarjal, Kroos and Benzema helped to remove the pressure from the young players and helped them perform. I slightly disagree with this video. Yes that’s our strategy but if we wanted to we can still pull the big stars, this year we could’ve gone for Harry Kane and that’s because Madrid prestige makes us desirable to any player which then forces the club to value the player at a more reasonable price. This strategy of young players was also to save money for the renovations of the stadium. Originally Florentino wanted to build a whole new stadium but ran into trouble with the locks government. Regardless it was still very expensive, I will not be surprised if we eventually go back to the galatico era in 5-10 years

Madrid were kings when the transfer windows happen however they starting to lose their crown since the rise of Sheikh owners i.e. Newcastle United and Manchester City and the increasing revenue of the Premier League meaning a modest club like Bournemouth can sign good players. The Galacticos policy was good in the past. Signing top class players at their peak but it did bring problems like trying to accommodate the players for game time and finding the best system to get the best of them. Since they can't compete financially to the Premier League and Sheikh owners, Madrid opted to sign young promising players that will become ballers in the future. Yes some of the players needed time to settle like Vini Jr and Rodrygo while other were dreadful signings like Reinier, Lucas Silva and Luka Jovic however I can see the gamble pay off in the long term and with Endrick on his way next year Madrid will be stronger than they were during the years of winning four Champions League titles in five years.

It wasn't that the club rejected the idea of refreshing the club but rather Zidane and the club had different ideas on how to refresh. The club over Zidane's first stint tried to sign players only for Zidane to reject them. The most notable were Kepa and Aubameyang who were all pretty much signed only for Zidane to step in last second and reject them. Courtois was also a player that Zidane did not want at the club, he wanted Navas to stay the number 1. Zidane also stopped both Marcelo and Isco from leaving during his 2nd stint.
