I haven't watched yet. But as an Everton fan my take would be: 1. Obviously underwhelming managerial appointments: Everyone since David Moyes has been a bad idea. The only manager, Benitez, that I thought was a good fit for our squad I also knew was a bad idea because some fans are never gonna let his Liverpool ties slide. 2. Splashing the cash: £28 million for Iwobi, and £40 million for Sigurdsson, £30 million for Keane, £30 million for Pickford, £20 million for Tosun... the list goes on. These are eye-watering prices for these guys. It also makes them much harder to shift. 3. Hiring a top Director of Football and then not goddamn sticking to their plan. Hire one and follow their strategy, or give the manager the reins, or work out a collaborative approach. But this too-many-chefs-in-the-kitchen approach is stupid and leads to a disorganised mess. 4. Play more youngsters! Our youth talent has generally been good at Everton, but we've not been great at easing them into the team, or grooming them up to supercede our elder statesman. Those that we have brought through (e.g. Tom Davies) have tended to go backwards after a while, seemjngly because our disorganised managerial environment is a harsh place for inexperienced talent to flourish. Davies looked better when first burst onto the scene than he does now. It's sad to recall, but he used to be like Conor Gallagher, not this disaffected player who drifts through games.

I don’t know, I sort of enjoyed watching Martinez’s Everton

Martinez had Everton in Europe and finished 5th his first season. And when he was fired they were in 12th, but had taken them to two cup semi-finals. The last 2 seasons they finished 12 and 10th, in his worst season, he had them better they've been.

@mattwarnock81093 жыл бұрын
@@jopearson6321 Like Inzaghi at Inter this year, Martinez had the advantage of following a disciplined, defensive manager. He inherited that defense and loosened the reigns so players could express themselves more. i.e. that sweet spot where the blanket covers just enough feet and head at the same time. That started to break down as he needed to refresh the defense (Antolin Alcaraz, Funes Mori..?) and would have worsened each year afterwards, IMO.

@@harolddottin10 When Moyes arrived, he created a culture at Everton. Hungry, young/overlooked/unfancied players who were on their way up, battling together from the first whistle, all under the "People's Club" umbrella. He's the last manager that "got" Everton and the Goodison crowd. We're at our best when we're the scrappy battling underdog who everyone hates to play - Atletico have shown over the years how you can apply that foundation to bigger signings and success. Do we need Moyes back? Probably not. But we do need a manager who'll transform the mentality, the culture around the club and the relationship with fans in the way he once did.

Let's put it this way. Under Moyes when we had no money at all we would finish in the odd champions league spot (we were robbed against Villareal and I'm still mad about it) and under Moshiti we've declined. I realize that you can't discuss Sigurdson's current status, but he really needs to be in this discussion. The club's record signing brought in with Lukaku's sell on money the same summer that Klaussen and Rooney were brought in (back in of course in Rooney's case). That summer remains the worst in terms of the cost/benefit for the club, although Big Sam's 50 mil January buy would be a close second.

From the set-up the lads have come up with there (from good business), you're looking at a sort of a narrow 4-2-3-1 with: DCL Richarlison // Gomes // Townsend Allan // Doucouré Digne // Mina/Keane // Godfrey // (Coleman) Pickford For me, that team is about 50,000 solar systems away from the top 3, and even still yonks away from United, West Ham, Spurs, Arsenal & Leicester etc. in terms of quality, which (admittedly on paper) makes them a mid-table team. Everton might need an Arsenal style clear-out sooner rather than later.

A lot of the problems with recruitment are pure bad luck... Bolasie played like 10 games then destroyed as an asset, Gomes brilliant then awful after another freak injury, Gbamin had no injuries then out for 2 years after just 2 games, Tosun out for over a year and not nearly as good as he was....that's £100m written off right there ... Then another £50m on Siggy, which is hardly the club's fault either. The "good" pile costs nearly £200m, of which we recouped profit on Kean, Gueye and the rest is our current "best" team. That means we've only really wasted about £150m, most of which was spent by fat Sam or Steve Walsh. Iwobi is the only true current mistake. Hideous luck really.

He's an old school striker that bullies people, think everton have surrounded him with terrible players to get him service, at the same time, he's such a throwback, that there are few players that can replicate his skill level, it's hard to have a capable backup if he's out for extended period of time. Hmm The narrative is always Everton spending £500m. The issue of course is as described but all clubs who want to progress spend even the top four who have paid money on players that haven’t worked out. Difference is that Everton have had an owner previously who did not invest, now their playing catch up unfortunately catch up takes a long time. And FFP means that they can’t continue the investment, where teams like City avoided that issue and spent oodles of cash. Also note you missed out players like Vlasic and Lookman where Everton took chances Cx and made money.
