Reasons why Shelvey is interesting: 1) When playing Liverpool with Swansea, he said 'The game isn't about me' and then scored a goal, an own goal and got a red card 2) He is a player on the cusp of being great - someone with half the skills of a world-class player, but also enough flaws to hold him back 3) He is the stupidest intelligent footballer in the game. He's a playmaker who will cut a team open with pinpoint passes, and then immediately two foot someone 4) He killed Harry Potter

As a Liverpool fan, Shelvey had a lot of promise, I think it was either the 2011/12 or 2012/13 season he showed a lot of potential, he had a good half a season, was scoring some goals, and was reminding me a bit of Gerrard. The problem Shelvey had/has though was his work ethic, he would go missing at times and drift in and out of games. Brendan Rodgers preferred Henderson to Shelvey because of Henderson’s great work ethic, but Henderson wasn’t as creative as Shelvey was and Shelvey wasn’t as good as Henderson was with the work ethic, but Rodgers preferred the work ethic over creativity. Matt Le Tissier was a big fan of Shelvey and said he has everything in his locker but he needs to unlock that potential. But like I said the stumbling block with Shelvey is his work ethic and drifts in and out of games, if Shelvey had the same amount of work ethic as Henderson has, Shelvey would still be at Liverpool today as the captain lifting up the Premier League title in 2020. Shelvey had great potential, but it was his bad work ethic that stopped him reaching that potential.

For the last two seasons, once we reach 65 minutes, it's like watching Declan Rice with two broken legs shield the back four. The only way he'd be viable is if we play 4-3-3 with Shelvey, Hayden and a strong box-to-box capable of helping with possession play (Midfielder that we don't have) (Last person we had with this physicality was Mo Diame I believe)

FM 2012 shelvey was a must buy. I think this series would benefit from something like a thesis statement that the analyst can argue for. eg. shelvey would be a world beater if he were Italian 10 years ago.
@KindredBrujah3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, agreed. It's a little woolly at the moment. As to your thesis statement, no he wouldn't be. He's good, but he's not Pirlo and he's not Totti. He would be a good Italian midfielder, perhaps good enough to get the odd cap for Italy, but no more than that.

I'm a Newcastle fan too, and while I do rate him, I do not feel he is good for Newcastle. He is best suited to a team who dominates possession. He would look unplayable at the top 6 teams, because he'd have more time on the ball, more possession. His flaws as a footballer, his work rate and his poor tackling won't be exposed as much.

I genuinely believe that Shelvey and Spearing were brought through together at Liverpool with the idea that they'd be the English replacements for Alonso and Mascherano. Weirdly it shows how highly they were thought of at the time, and how bad Liverpool's management were at the time. He's a decent player though, and deserves to be thought of as one of the best English Registas of his generation, as obsolete as that might be...

Shelvey can have games where he’s amazing. He has an amazing passing ability but he can go missing and lazy and if he’s not on his game he’s invisible. Sadly for us and him he’s going missing loads over last season. Seems uninterested and we should sell him to be honest he’s totally uninterested

Spot on my namesake. If he isn't bossing the midfield battle within the first 20 mins he fades out, it's quite an immature trait. He has phases where he knuckles down and gets a bit of consistency. No doubt with better players around him he'd look better but he was a step back after Cabaya, Shelvey lacks mobility but hopefully Willock will bring that like he did last season.

As a Swansea fan, Jonjo Shelvey was everything you love and hate as a fan. He'd score wonderful goals (Vs Villa, Vs Fulham), hit incredible long passes from deep to bypass a press & played on the edge so in derby matches or games with tension you'd love the fight and desire he showed to win the ball. However, he sometimes played on the edge too much (e.g. Vs Liverpool at home in a 2-2 draw when he had a hand in every goal), he seemed to ruffle feathers in the squad behind the scenes (press rumours) and sometimes it looked like he'd switch off or not be in the game at all and he couldn't snap back into it like certain players can.
