This is exactly why I respect and admire Bob. I've have been asking for this thin stainless steel pipe tutorial and he delivers 💯. Little ironic tho because im in Baytown TX testing for a company and I had got a 6inch sch 10 stainless that I busted out on the root smdh.
@dougankrum33287 жыл бұрын
...Bad Root..Ouch!........I've welded quite a bit of Sch. 10 stainless....always run plenty of purge...and even tape off the root except a couple inches where you're welding, I usually used a good bevel, and 1/16 to 3/32" root opening....1/16" filler....and all done with antique Airgas or Linde Transformer TIG machines....on these old machines....you get 1 dial...'current'.....and 1 switch...AC/DC-/DC+........

Charlie Spann yes it helps it from getting too hot, also turn the argon up on your tig rig as high as you possibly can that also helps
@dougankrum33287 жыл бұрын
It would help, as thin as sch.10 is....running a cap bead can still get the inside of the pipe very hot..... I've welded a LOT of 6, 8,10, and 12" sch. 10....most all was less than 3/16" thick....I tried running a TIG cap without purge....the inside was badly oxidized (sugared)....

Hi Bob, great video as usual. Going up the sides are the easy part. How do you contort coming off the bottom? Arc shots or not I'd love to see how you get comfortable, hold yourself steady, see the puddle with the wire in front of it. What's the best way to hold the torch while progressing up and around. It's not as easy as it sounds. Thanks, Tim

Very good. Imagine this I worked in food plant we had 1 inch 316 SS thin wall chemical fill lines, acids, caustics etc. These were often 100 plus feet long all welded in place no ferrules or clamps to get inside and purge. They would get pinhole leaks and we had to climb up into the rafters and try and repair these with TIG, porous, couple year old SS, with chemical residue inside, talk about a challenge.

Im totally new to this, but just started sch 10 ss pipe in our class, how long do you purge for? I have just put the tape on, and let it sit there for around 3 mins, any advise I appreciate.
@mgjr0097 жыл бұрын
Clive. It depends on the diameter/size of the pipe and the length of the pipe. The more volume, the longer you will need to purge it. The purpose of a purge is to expel the oxygen out with an inert gas such as argon or nitrogen. Argon is heavier than air so if you are rolling one out horizontal like in the video, just imagine the argon settling at the bottom and pushing out the oxygen out the top. If you are using masking tape, for the side you want your purge to vent I'd put a few vent holes towards the top of the pipe and then when I feel it's good and purged I will put more vent holes top, sides and bottom. And if you don't poke enough holes or large enough holes in your tape and your argon purge flow rate is too high, when you go to finish your root pass it could blow out on you because the argon has to escape somewhere and it will push through the molten metal and you will fight it trying to tie it in.

every time i do a gap like this i get lack of penetration any tips on what im doing wrong?
@SuperPoonSlayer7 жыл бұрын
most likely not enough heat and going too fast. need to let the walls break down meaning you should be key holing and/or have the filler wire fed from the back. im guessing you are doing the lay wire technique? that can lead to lack of fusion and suck back when you're welding from the 6 oclock to 9 oclock
@BrianVillarreal-wu9xf7 жыл бұрын
ok got ya thanks for the help man ganna try it out!!

Feed the rod straight down from the top tack onto the bottom. The rod will look like a straight line going down the middle of the pipe. I do that up until I'm about up the middle of the pipe and then I just dip the root.
@GigaDonk7 жыл бұрын
do you have to purge only stainless or all metals?
@dougankrum33287 жыл бұрын
Most anything except maybe carbon steel piping, if you want nice root back face......I've even purged that carbon steel to get nice bead inside the pipe..... Some years ago, I was working at a bio-mass generating plant...33 mega-watts ...but steam temp/pressure the same realm as Nukes.....1050 degrees F'... and 1,100 PSI.....from steam generator to turbine was 12" stainless pipe...about 2" wall..... During a routine, scheduled shutdown, contractors replaced all the superheat boiler tubes....2" heavy wall ( about 3/8") chromoly, 180 degree bends, maybe 250 of them......welders didn't purge....inspector 'failed' most (using a lighted bore-scope)...arguments started...so.....all had to be cut out and done over......30-35 welders sent home for a week, lots of crane work...access only from top of 130 foot high water-wall boiler....tubes all had to have ends re-sawed and beveled.....all done inside the firebox.... working on scaffolds....80-100 feet up there.... so...I'm sure all the re-work cost a lot more than a few cylinders of argon.....you can get paper water soluble purge dams for this exact situation, when you wash out the steam system later...the purge dams just dissolve and go out with waste water.....
@horror79277 жыл бұрын
You have to purge all metals except carbon steel....unless you have to use an alloy filler rod then that carbon pipe has to be purged as well
@davideirth7 жыл бұрын
Purge all metals or have backing gas mate if you are penetrating thru the metal, other wise you will get a sugaring effect on the other side of the weld. (not structurally sound ) Except aluminium.

I have never seen purge done before, except when welding fuel tank with file still in it. When welding high carbon steel I have seen it when there is an issue when TIG welding one may encounter impurity, the use of a Stainless filler wire works well. What is the theory behind this?
@kevinannand90267 жыл бұрын
purge is 100% necessary on any stainless welding, including carbon when using stainless filler since stainless is so sensitive to atmospheric gasses.. some people just purge the root.. i purge for the whole process
@dougankrum33287 жыл бұрын
Yes...I purge anything thinner than about 1/4"....a few extra CFH of Argon is waaay less $$$ than a weld that fails a qualification for a job interview........or for any weld ....

It's's ok to remove filler wire but you have to flip it around to other side that is clean, this weld is contaminated. Also, hand feeding rod should be done through the fingers, not with your entire arm. Try to choose the correct rod to lay wire the cap and avoid feeding wire on the cap.

I have been welding some schedule ten stainless at work. some guys have been telling me to slam it together no gap, just keep wire in case it opens up. in the puddle just wait for the little balls to dance inside the puddle and take off and it leaves a perfect colorful pass inside the pipe on root. I have done it on small stuff just afraid to try on 10 inch. what do you think?

What's the reason behind taping over the root opening?

We're purging the pipe from the inside. If you don't tape the root opening you are allowing for air to enter the inside of the pipe.
