I'm 70 years old and was a Boilermaker field welder with 65,000 hours welding but mostly stick, dual shield wire feed and lots of air arc gouging. We do some oxy/acetylene cutting but not so much experience TIG welding as I did not work on boilers where they used TIG on tubes. I welded penstocks on dams but we used 7018 rod. Welded pipe with 6010 root and 7018 filler. Been exposed to submerged arc and other processes but TIG has always intrigued me as it is one of the purest/ cleanest form of welding. I am now watching lots of TIG videos because I want to teach my grandkids TIG welding as they are very interested in cars and they want to learn to weld on things like turbocharger, intercooler, roll cages and stainless exhaust etc. My buddy and I are currently building a restomod older Corvette and I made a car dolly and rotisserie so we can spin both the body and frame together or separate and now I'm enjoying retirement doing hobby stuff. Bob Moffatt is awesome and he sounds so calm he is easy to listen to! Thank you for putting out nice videos!

Simply: Thank you. Over my career as a technician/engineer/scientist and into retirement, now doing stuff just for the fun of it, the one skill that's always eluded me has been TIG welding. I've watched hundreds of videos and none of them really helped. I don't know exactly why, but this video of yours simply touched all the bases and put everything in order for me. I just went down to the shop and ran a few welds with your lesson in mind and for the first time I can honestly say I wasn't ashamed of the result. I even ran a fillet weld right into the corner of a right-angled joint. (Never been able to get in there!). I had to stop simply because my hands were shaking with excitement. I'm going to cut that bit of weld out and frame it to go on my desk!

I'm a 55 y/o newbie to TIG and a home hobbyist. I wanted to add my experience regarding being able to see the puddle. I struggled a lot with arc length, dipping, touching the tungsten with the filler, and I basically hit a wall where I wasn't able to get better no matter how much I practiced. Someone talked me into trying a magnifier or cheater lens, and what a difference it makes! I wasn't even aware that I couldn't see, until I could see with the cheater. After a little experimenting I settled on a 2.0x cheater lens that fits right inside my helmet, and I am amazed at the difference, and the improvement in my ability to see and control the puddle. I still need lots of practice and make mistakes, but some of the viewers, particularly over 45 years of age, may really find they benefit from using a cheater lens.

I've welded for about 45yrs and don't consider myself a professional welder. I'm now semi retired enjoy welding and building things for personal use, roof racks, brush guards, utility trailers and the like. TIG has always been presented as a SCARY proposition but after watching this instructional video I am going to make the jump and add a TIG to my arsenal of welders. Thank you for a great basic start. I am 71 years old and have been welding as a hobby for 54 years, mostly Oxy and AC/DC arc. While in high school I purchased a used Lincoln 300 amp Ideal arc AC machine and used it to build a Model A Ford roadster. I hate arc welding because it is so dirty, but it gets the heavy work done. I have always admired the clean welds created with TIG but could not come up with the money to buy a good machine, so I relied on my Oxy Asc. for some work that was probably too heavy for it. But with enough heat and multiple passes I got by. Four days ago I received my first TIG machine, an Everlast 256si watercooled multi process ( it is also a 60 amp Plasma torch) I can't wait to get my 220 wired to the garage so I can start practicing the Technics You have presented on this video. And thanks for the advise on taking care of my equipment. P.S. I was exited to see that your video was made using an Everlast machine. I will be watching for your video posts.

As to seeing the weld pool. I am 72, and learned to weld at night school at my local HS vocational school about 8 years ago. Actually passed my 3G certification (vertical 7018 electrode) only looking at a 'bright light', rarely seeing the weld pool, and yes, I ground a LOT. To actually see better. and since I wear bifocals, I had a safety pair made with a larger frame which gave me more area of focus, and then got the 'cheater lenses' for the helmet (I use a 1.75). It's amazing how much easier it is to weld when you can see a weld pool and move it correctly. I am wanting to re-learn TIG (did a small amount in those class years ago) and your video is most helpful. Thanks for the clear and concise explanations and excellent photography.

Being 71 years young, I thought tig may be out of range of things to learn. After watching your video several times, I uses my Son's welder and did some tig that surprised him. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? I have duplicated the brown coloration you talked about by passing gas while welding (lol). Oh, that wasn't brown tint on the weld, that was brown tint in my shorts! A very informative video. Thanks for sharing your years of experience.

Just when I think I've seen it all from Bob. Again I find myself stumbling back to tig basics. I really started getting pretty good at aluminum. Then I thought I was doing so great I can easily try my hand and knowledge with just plain old easy steel like the new guys again. Wrong ! Back to the basics. Thank God for Bob and in the 2 minutes I'm re-learning assembling my basic, air-cooled 17 torch, again, I realized, I don't know shit ! Thanks again Bob. For the longest time I could not see the arc well. I figured it was either the helmet or lighting.. Turned out to be my eyes. Reading glasses and extra lenses in the helmet and my welds got a bunch better. Greatly lowered sticking the tungsten in the weld and touching the rod to the tungsten.. Your emphasis on seeing the weld hits home.

What made a big difference for me was taking my glasses off! I'm very short sighted. With glasses off, close up I can count the hairs on a fly's leg (literally). It never occurred to me how much that could help with welding.

My Gosh!!!!.....I learned more about tig welding from you sir than anyone else, you are awsome, a great small batch of lessons. Thank you so much from a guy in Ky whose trying to get by....I've got a tig machine and of course a mig and stick, just hoping to learn enough tig from you to get a good start on doing some tig.....love your personality and patience, thank you so much, I've got some cast transmission shift levers that have to be shortened, luckily I've got extras. Love your work man, I can't believe that I work every day, now iI am old, pushing 75yrs, have been welding since I used my dad's home giant of a machine that he built to weld stick on the farm, but hey, that thing worked awesome, I ran miles of bead, ha. I'm one of eleven kids, he worked as an engineer and taught electronics at night, when there wasn't any fixing someones breakdowns, or grocery store cold boxes, etc....but we never had a tig, and i always wanted to learn, wish i could drive out for a visit and get a few lessons. Thanks for your time. for being a good man who has the patience to teach us younger folks. Thanks for sharing your knowledge sir, I feel I owe you. Thank you again friend.

Thank you for this lesson. I am learning for the International Welding Engineer degree and tomorrow I will be tig welding for the first time in my live during lessons in Lincoln Electric. This movie makes me less scared.

When first I started MIG welding about 20 years ago, I had trouble seeing the weld puddle and it was because I needed reading glasses. The poor vision only showed up with the welding helmet on. In darkness, your pupils open up and your depth of field is shallower. During regular lighting, my depth of field was wide enough (or deep) enough that I could read quite clearly but with the welding helmet on, the weld puddle was out of focus. Bought a pair of reading glasses like 1.25 diopters and I was good. Basically went to the dollar store and tried on different strength glasses until I could read some extremely fine print clearly. But it sure was frustrating at first without reading glasses. As you get older, your corneas harden and you naturally require reading glasses. 20 years later, I use 3.00 and higher reading glasses just to see the weld puddle. Every couple of years, I have to go in strength.

It is, actually, the lens inside the eye that loses its elasticity at about 45 years to the point of needing help to focus at close range.
