good video. I've only done stick welding so was cool to see how this type welding was done and you talked plaine and showed a clean view of what you were talking about. reason 4 looking at ur vid was so I'd know what to ask about when I get my stainless exhaust for car and find someone to weld it up. ur a good teacher by keeping it simple and not a bunch of talking about stuff that takes away from learning. thanks 4 vid.

This is a legitimate shop? With all sorts of 'make shift' items? WOW!!.. That said - Abe -> you're friggen awesome. Too many people cant think outside of the box and not only did you show a proper way of welding Stainless pipe but how to do it without all of the extra junk that just makes it easier. I'd trust your shop with my cars.

in show quality work, you dont scratch the pipe with sand paper, just clean really well with acetone, nobody wants to see scratched stainless. I weld with the 250ex and I love it.
@kf85753 жыл бұрын
If you want a decent weld on it you do. You then polish it after welding
@frankcarden47092 жыл бұрын
I used to buff welds on hand rails, sandpaper after till flat,finer grade paper,then scotch Brite,then buffing wheel with pollish. Keep all the scratch directions going around the pipe not along the length. Mirror finish.

Can y’all do a pros and cons of every welding process?
@samuelvanlane3 жыл бұрын
Tig is for strong clean pure welds you want to last for ever (potentially) but is the most time consuming. Mig is a wire fed gun with a shielding gas it's great for the quick strong welds but is a messy process with potentially lots of spatter kind of the jack of all trades weld process that is faster than tig but isn't great for thin material. Stick is predominantly used "in the field" or in construction where you are exposed to the elements it is the most accessible form of welding but one of the hardest to master.

If the arc is making too much of a static sound does that mean you need to turn down the amps?

Man you make it look easy. Well done
@kf85753 жыл бұрын
With the holes in the tape on the opposite end when purging, its much better practice to put the holes right at the top rather than in the middle, due to how the argon will fill the pipe from the bottom just like water would do👍
@jpracing_fab13483 жыл бұрын
You are right, but he is rotating the pipe so it’s not always going to be at the top unless you replace the tape every time you rotate.

I've welded on aluminum and stainless steel and I seen that your tungsten was tapered to a point ...but in my experience when I weld on thin or soft metals it tends to burn through until I was told to try my tungsten less tapered ....
@kf85753 жыл бұрын
You Was probably trying to weld with too long an arc then, or not enough amps therefore travel speed too slow giving too much heat input. All a blunter taper does is constricts the arc width, giving a narrower puddle.
@Phil_Mycock_693 жыл бұрын
Too much heat or staying in one spot too long as mentioned, also you need to let thin metals cool, you can’t just keep running the hell out of it in case you’re doing that

Is the best way to repair a stainless steel motorcycle header that has some 1/4" gaps and cracks to use a copper backer pressed up to the gaps? I'm thinking that trying to purge this pipe will allow too much argon to escape through the gaps and work against me. Any help is appreciated.

Owns a huge shop but doesn't have a belt sander or purge caps? Don't sand it anyways. Just clean with acetone really well. If you have to sand it only do the width of your weld. That way it's covered up. Keep a 70-80 degree angle to your pipe as you travel. As you were welding the torch angle went from 80 to 70 t0 60 down to 40 degrees or so. .

@Phil_Mycock_693 жыл бұрын
It’ll be black aka sugared on the inside, if it were me I’d just have as tight a fit as you can, fuse it together on low heat, let it cool, then come back along adding metal for a good thick cap, end of the day it’s only and exhaust, it’s not high pressure or anything so chances of it breaking are next to none if you fuse together then add a thick cap

Very helpful video but, you did not go over all of the settings. You only said amperage and then start talking about a pedal and torch. What about gas flow SCFM? Polarity? A/C or D/C, what about Hz? pre flow timing? post flow timing? I suppose some of these settings should be read in your equipment manual but, it's kind of important for proper set up.
