On this episode of The Fab Forums I finish weld all the stainless exhaust on the twin turbo mustang build "Gray Goose", I got over back purging and show you how I heat wrapped the lower sections.
Welcome to The Fab Forums. My name is Kyle Voss and I produce Custom Motorsports Fabrication content of all forms for you. Carbon Fiber, TIG Welding, Metal Shaping, Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Custom Choppers, and everything in between. I work hard to bring you new content on a weekly basis.
Here are some of the builds you can find on this channel.
I have built several Chevy trucks on this channel. The first was my 1964 C10 named Crown Spoyal and the most recent C10 truck project was the 1969 I currently have named the Black Pearl.
I am also finishing up a custom twin turbo Ford Mustang build I call the Gray Goose. It’s a 400 cubic inch Windsor style engine with twin 70mm turbos. I am hoping to make around the 1000 horse power mark to the tires on this particular build.
Last but not least is the one off custom hot rod build called the Bibbster. This is what I call a modern day hot rod. It’s made from an old Ford Mustang foxbody, but made to look like an old school open wheeled hot rod.
I also feature other fabricators and shops like Cutworm Specialties hand formed aluminum wide body kit for a BMW e46. Jeb Greenstone has also built a twin turbo, coyote powered model A style hot rod from scratch, and is currently building a Toyota TE72 wagon drift car powered by a 1UZ Lexus v8. Jeb’s custom fabrication skills are fun to watch and always make for good videos.
Check out my playlist to see some or all of these builds.

I might of missed it in the video. When back purging do you continuously feed Argon, while welding, or only back purge enough to displace the oxygen. Do you recommend it for aluminum exhaust. I only have a Miller mig. with aluminum spool gun. I'm thinking spool gun to tack it together, and one of the welders at the shop can finish it with tig. But now I'm thinking about stress points at the welds.

There are better end fittings you can use so that you don't get turbulence in your pipe system. They are butt welded instead of slip on. BTW. If your fit is tight, you don't need to add rod to your butt welds. Enjoyed the video.

Another option if you already have a backup tank, is to use a 2nd tank with a standard flowmeter. I have a backup tank in case I run out on Saturday or mid-weld or just dont have time to run to the welding supply shop, and a cheap standard flow meter is about $40 which is cheaper to add to your kit than a cheap dual flow meter ($92 -ish). Of course, if you are tig welding, you probably aren't afraid of spending money in the first place because it sure isn't cheap to get setup... :) - Plus you can purge with Nitrogen instead of Argon if you do a lot of it, might be cheaper to use Nitrogen in the 2nd tank. Personally, I'd rather have the 2nd tank of Argon around.

Have you ever used nitrogen instead of argon for the back-side purge on stainless? Nitrogen (N2) is much cheaper than argon, and while N2 can't be used for all metals (like titanium because N2 reacts with Ti), it works well for most stainless alloys. I use N2 in repairs of restaurant kitchen stainless furniture and counter tops made from 304 with excellent results. I do air conditioning and refrigeration work, so I have plenty of N2 on hand; it is commonly used to purge the air from A/C and refrigeration systems before evacuating, and then filling with refrigerant. If you do a lot of back-side purges, a cylinder of nitrogen will pay for itself quickly. Why the use on N2 as a back-side purge isn't better known, I can't explain.

I am learning how to do the same thing. I am more experienced at tig welding aluminum, but I've never tried stainless steel. I hope it will be an easy transition. I have to do some modifications to a car that already has an aftermarket stainless steel 304 exhaust. I will be cutting the pipe and making it shorter in one section. The problem here I am worried about is that the exhaust has about 10,000 miles of driving on it. No winters, just miles. I'm sure the inside will be "carboned up". How do suggest I adjust for this? I assume I should fill it with argon with the tin-foil trick like you do. Can you offer any advice?

So you have tried it then? What I have found is, you can put it on before you tack the tubes together, or you can add handle length to an acid brush to get back into tubes that are a bit of a reach. I've been using it since about 1985 and I haven't seen you do anything in these vids where it couldn't be used. I wouldn't use it on Food industry type parts but this racecar-street rod stuff is greet for it.

Interesting video,Cannondale tried to make a motocross machine where the 2 header pipes were too short and too close to the suspension unit.It overheated and contributed to the bikes failure. So called engineers made these decisions but you knew it with horsesense. What does this tell you about qualifications?. I learned to TIG weld st.st at a professional course in France and was told to pass the argon through the highest part of the tube to purge it and the evacuation hole was at the bottom. WHAT?. I did it the other way around and it worked fine .What does this tell you about qualifications?. How many fools are there out there?.
