These soft-on-the-inside, crunchy-on-the-outside buns make any sandwich better, which is why I was shocked and amazed to learn that these beauties are virtually unknown outside San Francisco. So, if you want your next turkey and Swiss on a Dutch Crunch Roll, you’ll have to make them yourselves, which is both fun and easy. Enjoy!

In the UK we have tiger bread, except in one of our supermarket chains (Sainsbury's) a little girl wrote to the company to ask why it was called tiger bread because it looks more like giraffe bread, the CEO agreed and thereafter it has been called Giraffe Bread.

Tiger bread is sold in loaves in Australia. They also make the bread a lot denser than other loaves, so I use it to make the perfect French toast: custardy and thick as if it was soaked for ages, but still maintaining form

Chef John, long time listener-first time caller. My family’s sandwich bread of choice always will be Dutch crunch or sourdough and my father taught me to dip the rolls before final rise and the results are finer crackled bits of wonderful. Also, my favorite part has to be the batter that runs on the pan and gets just a little darker ❤️ overnight bulk fermentation is a must in my fathers eyes so I definitely have to side with him. Sorry chef.

I visited to New Zealand about 10 years ago and had tiger bread for the first time there. Loved it so much I learned how to make it when I got back to the U.S. because around here tiger bread just isn't available at all. It's really yummy! That touch of toasted sesame oil in the rice flour coating is the real secret to it -- I don't recommend skipping it. You'll want the asian-style "toasted" sesame oil that has a honey color (available at Kroger), not the sesame oil that just looks like vegetable oil and doesn't really have an aroma.
