Butch Harmon’s basic setup drill help me far more than any other instructing I’ve ever learned. I went from shooting over 100 to mid 80’s to low 90’s. I recently looked for his drill for my son, but I couldn’t find it. I did find a drill exactly like his, I’m sure the instructor on Golf TV learned from Butch.

The first swing showed here was the best “natural” developed swing he ever worked with, arguably the best swing he ever had. Ironically, that same swing would be shunned nowadays by coaches everywhere. His swing plane became way more shallow over the years, more Adam Scott type of plane…before it was more Justin Thomas, vertical then shallow at impact , which is maybe why he appreciates JTs game so much, amongst other things.

1:07 What is missed in this clip to that the swing is not a swing. The swing is down but not back. You play the club where you want the club to fall from. That’s why Butch talks about a position where the club just falls. The feeling should be straight as the curve happens because of rotation. You must let it “fall”. 1:29 The backswing is a take not a swing. Tiger said it out loud 🙏🏿

I’ve had this same swing thought of my arms going first and my hips following for a couple of months now and hearing what most yt coaches say about having the hips move before the arms made me feel strange about it. This video was very reassuring.
@TheWedgeWizard11 ай бұрын
The hips still get re-centered before the club is at the top and start the downswing, you can over due it though and get the club stuck behind you. That’s what this “feel” is correcting, he’s not literally starting the downswing hands first, again it’s a “feel” not a real.
@lor3n79011 ай бұрын
@@TheWedgeWizard i know that its just a feel, but my point was that everyones talking about exaggerating the separation of upper and lower body and really "feeling" the hips go first, which is the opposite of what is shown in the video.
@TheWedgeWizard11 ай бұрын
@@lor3n790 right, like most things in the golf swing there’s a happy medium. So many ams throw their shoulders at it from the top, come over the top and do the opposite, that’s why so much instruction is about getting the hips starting the down swing and dropping to the inside. Again there’s almost always a happy medium you don’t often hear about which is usually the biggest gripe I have with a lot of instruction, they’ll make it seem like the more of something you do the better like dropping inside for example rather than showing the Goldie locks zone and explaining both ends of the spectrum plus the causes and effects.

The title is perfect. My brother-in-law takes his driver backswing to about 90 degrees (short backswing) and then launches the club head with fake speed almost as if he’s trying to push the golf ball down the fairway. I can never tell him that because he thinks he’s got his swing all figured out as he’s been golfing longer than me.

Just goes to show that the line between fantasy (you can coach good results) and reality (you can play well) is defined by two points: the first point is the pin, and the 2nd point is the midpoint of the line where the ball lands and where it stops rolling. I for one will fully admit that I have taught myself how to hit my mid to high irons and drivers fairly well. The low irons, my 3-wood, we're in therapy. But most of my irons and my drivers, we're on good terms. I still look at my clubhead during setup and admit that it's a matter of faith. "I've done this plenty of times before, I'll do it again no problem, just do the usual thing". I can still change the lag that I hold in my downswing and change the ball flight radically. But I only know of one way to hit the ball where I want it to go. And I just set up over the ball and do it. So to me, golf comes down to looking at the lie, looking at the desired landing area, picking a club then picking the correct technique to swing the club to make that shot happen and that comes almost completely from experience. My PW is the only iron that I have real confidence in that I can get the ball where I want it. The rest I'm happy to just get on the green heading towards the hole, even better if I can hit on a line to the pin, and my drivers and 3-wood likewise I'm happy if they just go in the fairway heading towards the green. So "confidence", I'm not really lacking. My standards are not all that high. I'm not trying to hit a 72. I'm just trying to put the ball in play somewhere that I can hit a decent follow-up shot. The big difference that I'm trying to do this from the tips, each and every time, where most players are content playing the white tees. I feel that if I don't tee-off from the back tees then I'm not really confident in my game and I care too much if I hit a bad shot. And if that is the case, then how *can* you play well? If you're worrying so much about the shot that you hit...how can you hit a decent shot like that?
@strongisland70152 жыл бұрын
You’re missing the point of doing drills though. Yes golf comes down to how we hit the ball and how straight it goes to the pin or where we are trying to play the ball so we have a decent chance to get it in the hole in as least many shots as possible. But the drills and getting the swing to be a certain way is because we can strike the ball much better, make it go much farther and straighter with the correct swing path. Doesn’t matter what clubs you’re more confident with or not, if your swing path is on plane and has some good lag in it (which should come as a result of good body movements) those long irons will feel like a pitching wedge to you. I’m not trying to hit a 72 as well but I know if I work on my swing, I can get closer and closer to that score without thinking about it. It will come as a result of better ball striking.
@touristguy872 жыл бұрын
@@strongisland7015 ...just keep in mind that it is not an exact science and you will never be perfect at it. Keep your goals realistic and attainable and work at them step by step. Since ultimately ball flight is determine by strike quality and strike quality is determine by strike location and club orientation, speed and swing path those are the primary concerns along the road to good shot placement and consistency.
@touristguy872 жыл бұрын
@@strongisland7015 drills are useful to the point where you learn proper swing mechanics. They are a problem when you forget that playing a real round of golf is not a drill or even a series of drills. Each shot is a test, not a drill. As a "feel" type player, I can 100% agree when he says feel and real are completely different things alot of time. It can be SO DIFFICULT to convey that concept to some players, particularly newer players, who often try to do exactly what you're trying to tell them to "feel" like they're doing. When teaching "feel" you're teaching sensations to aim for while hitting the golf ball. The person you're teaching must already have either an intuitive or actual understanding of their own golf swing or, at least, knowledge of various club positions within their swing to be able to apply whatever feel change you're trying to work on with them.
@aarodful2 жыл бұрын
This is why I record my practice sessions and look at my swing. I feel like I am doing something and i have the concept down. Then I'll rewatch my swing and I wasn't doing it at all. Then when what I felt like I was doing really matched with the tape, I would know I truly had the right idea.

He bends the shaft in transition and unloads everything into the ball. This notion of letting the arms fall is flat wrong and a big reason why people don’t have enough distance and accuracy. Try it you will be surprised. Even Sergio Garcia said it’s like a pulling a rope or ringing a bell in the downswing. Bend that shaft dynamically you will be shocked at the results.

Equipment makes the difference. Jack could adjust to today's Equipment. Tiger used wood early in his golf. The ball would be the difference, no golfers in today's modern game could adjust to the ball quickly. I played professionally in both Eras and it was hard to change from a wound ball to a solid ball. The clubs were shorter, the lofts were weaker, we were not driven by distance we were more concerned with accuracy because of the ball. Distance and money are the driving force in today's game, this is the reason golf courses are becoming obsolete, not enough land for the price to make it economical. Tiger is the greatest player of his generation, no doubt but Jack was his, Arnold was his and Bobby Jones was his. You can't compare the two.
