These videos are whats making me fall in love with golf in a completely different way. I had 193 to a flag on a par 3 and couldn't reach it with a stock yardage so I hit a hooded 5 iron that moved like crazy from right to left and found the green. Easily my favourite shot I've hit lately because I had to be creative to find it!

literally, in about 1 month you guys helped drop some shots off my handicap based on your compression series. The "closed" club face...not really being closed (it's really square) helped out a TON! Keep these coming guys!

Tiger’s 2002 book “How I Play Golf” is a good read and also has great pull-out stop action photos of him swinging different clubs from three different points of view. I used those photos standing between two mirrors, front and back, to match all the position waypoints of my swing with his gaining a lot of new insights. Another interesting read is Butch Harmon’s autobiography .”The Pro: Lessons from my father about golf and life” about how he came to coach Tiger. Tiger’s father Earl realized that his natural intuitive swing which allowed him to visualize and hit in such imaginative ways wouldn’t hold up over the long term on the PGA tour so Earl approached Butch to coach Tiger and give him a more systematic approach. It was reading Tiger’s description of learning how to hit shots nine ways a kid coached by his dad which inspired me to learn how to do it and to being able see nine different possible shot strategies when standing over a ball, even more when you factor in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full swings. Fortunately I was retired and working part time as a starter at a course unlimited free range balls and rounds and plenty of free time to play practice rounds.

Mac's straight shots here were more impressive (to me) than where he's hitting big slinging draws or super slidey fades. Love this! #moremac

You nailed it Ian , sometimes you play a round and the score might be rubbish actually more often from a putting perspective yet through the round you pulled off some great shots fitting the shot perfectly into what you imagined , these rounds are often what gives you more confidence knowing you can control the shots how you wanted .

over the last year or so i don't try to hit straight shots anymore as i find it easier to try to hit a shape even if it don't hit target but moves the way in tried to hit it I'm happy i do this on course and range it defo helps on course when your in trouble does not always work but at least i have the option to try to move both ways and keep it low, last few rounds I've only been carry 7 iron down in irons and if im to far away from green for the 7 ill try and sling it hard right to left to get the extra yards fun to try and thanks to you both for confirming there is no correct way to play golf its what ever works for you keep up the good work lads

One of the best things I ever did on the range was the empty bag drill. I would randomly pull a club from my bag, choose a target (choose a shot shape for the advanced level) then swing. I would then rest that club on my bag, pull different club and hit to a different target and repeat that till my bag was empty. It’s a principle of random practice versus block practice (same club, same target over and over) which helps simulate real golf. The range sessions usually don’t go well but the retention and learning by your body the next time you play is improved.

I’ve been using (almost) this drill for a while- just draw/fade/straight for “higher” and “lower”. It’s great fun. But I’ve never picked a distance for all of them- an inspired idea- I’ve never focused on the pin-finding accuracy, rather just the shape to get around trees and under/over branches. Off to the range for me!!

I've been having fun playing with flight shapes out on course, thanks to Mac's input on this channel, and following his IG. I've discovered I'm much more consistent and a natural fade hitter. But I've been working on draws too, and it's fun to practice both.

Fun video. Consistency vs. creativity: I have a friend who is a 4 handicap. His swing is always identical from driver to lob wedge. On the course almost every hole he defines "another ho-hum par". Recently met a guy for a round, 75 years old who was scratch in his youth, who carried seven clubs in his bag. His ability to shape shots was inspiring, fun to watch. I prefer watching the creative player over the mechanically perfect player. I strive to be a creative player, but as a 15 handicap I make too many swing mistakes, but I do have fun!

When Goosen first moved to Nona he would take a basket of balls and dump them in the trees and hit all sorts of shots based on what window he had. If you go back and watch his first US Open win you can see that practice pays off.

This is literally something I do for warm-up. I'll take 3 clubs, and than randomize shot shape with iron. So for instance I hit stinger 4i, after slice 6i and after that hit Hook 5i. Next 3 balls I might hit flop shot 60°. Try to hit a PW a low as possible. After high as possible driver. I love this, really makes it fun for me :)

Random 9 window drill: On range i toss a tee in the air and wherever it points is the window I will it. Points low left - hit low fade. Point straight up - high straight. Technically I won’t ever get the mid straight as that would be tee landing on its head.

Lol some of these comments made me realize we need a 9 window for “us” 1. Power fade (aka extreme slice) 2. Pull (aka snap hook) 3. Shank 4. Top 5. Blade 6. Chunk (more divot than ball) 7. Worm burner (poor man’s stinger) 8. Members bounce (off a tree) 9. The backwards ball

I play 9 windows quite a bit with my wedges and short irons on the sim. Set parameters, see how many shots it takes you to complete. If you want to make it even more difficult add spin parameters.

Mac’s the man. As these are often out of the rough type shots then I’m left wondering if you need to really exaggerate shot shapes with the reduced spin that rough gives? Less spin = less curvature, right? 🤔
@paulhuppmann8910
@paulhuppmann8910 2 жыл бұрын
less spin actually = more curvature as the spin axis tilt more extremely that's why wedges curve substantially less than longer clubs
@colinwalker7466
@colinwalker7466 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply Paul 😁. I get the logic behind the wedge vs. long iron, but isn’t that backspin vs. tilt axis spin? For the same amount of required curvature with the same club where you purposely impart tilt axis spin, then I’d have thought more effort would be required from the rough to impart the same amount of tilt axis spin as would be required from the fairway, right? Might have to tinker with taped faces and wet balls on the range to satisfy my curiosity 😄👍

It’s funny you would say that Ian about enjoying golf because you pulled off a shot. I find the rounds that I played the best and left happiest were the rounds that I hit the best shots. My score my not have reflected how well I hit it but I left the course feeling much happier then the rounds I scored well and didn’t hit the shots I wanted too.

9 windows, well I have broken a couple and hit a seagull and once hit the tee marker and the ball went 50 yards behind me....does that count? At my best I can hit the low and high draws and cuts, the straight balls and average heights are the most awkward for me.
@randyprice1602
@randyprice1602 2 жыл бұрын
This is a great video, but to my (very limited and probably wrong) understanding, this is a more extreme and probably more difficult version of Tiger's 9-window drill. In the TM video, he's hitting 6i into the wind for all of the shots, and his center heights are 75-100-115. He's also hitting slight draws and fades, to the point that all of his swings look almost identical (with the exception of the follow-thru). In contrast, varying the heights by 40 feet above & below center, hitting everything to a single target, and hitting slices and hooks (e.g., that first swing had an in-to-out path of 18-degrees), seems like a much more difficult undertaking.

I love hitting odd shots at the range. How far can I hit it left, can I keep a 3 iron low as I'm stuck in tree trouble, I like using a drill of hitting all my clubs that go more than 100 yards to 100 yards except driver.

Very informative. Just keep in mind, very few can move the ball in the manner in which Mac approaches HIS shots. The complexity of hitting the "Tiger Nine:" ball shots gets far, far more complex given undulating lies. Hitting a ball on a downhill or uphill lie has massive complexity in the clubs used, setup and shot needed to get out of "trouble."

If you aim at a target though, a high slice will take distance off. So you need to be able to do it whilst changing clubs to achieve the same distance. Don't know if tiger was also changing swing speed also!

Kinda misses the point when you use different clubs imo. It's meant to be a drill to manipulate your swing and change the result with th e same club. The distance is irrelevant.
@MacBoucherGolf
@MacBoucherGolf 2 жыл бұрын
Tom lots of different ways to interpret this drill. You can do in whatever way you want to hit different windows. There’s no right or wrong. I do it with the same club sometimes when working on flights or I’ll do it with a variety of clubs if I’m trying to hit specific yardages. The goal remains the same which is to hit different flight windows.
