This was my freshman year at McGavock, and the moment I walked into the band room for the very first rehearsal, I knew this year would be amazing beyond my wildest dreams. Looking back I still get goosebumps listening to the power of this band, and I'm humbled to have been a part of it.

I was a senior clarinet player that year. I figured our best days were behind us with the graduation of the very large, ridiculously talented class of '82. The band was smaller, and both of the directors who were with us when I was a freshman had left. This was truly a miraculous year, culminating with this performance. When we hit the final mark time in the closer, I knew that no matter what, we were definitely "leaving it all on the field".

I was at this competition in 1982 in the Northmont Band. I seem to recall it snowed during the competition. Anyone else remember? It did not stick, but it was the only time I was at MTSU.

It managed to win despite 50% turnover in membership from the previous year, a staff entirely under the age of 30, and massive drill rewrites after band camp (see mcgavock.com history). This show was so amazing, I was cheering the band at the playoffs even though I was part of their competition.

The camera cut off before one of my favorite moments, when our drum major, Bill Whitefield, threw his hat to cut us off. All these years later, we still talk about this performance. Thank you all for you kind, gracious comments. Andrew, we had an immense respect for you guys at Overton. I still marvel at how you did that show with nearly 300 folks on the field. Now THAT was impressive!

Can anyone direct me to the source music of the opener? I love that piece, they had played it in 1977 (I think). I’ve only seen it referenced as “scream” and I think in 1982 they referred to it as “scream revisited”. I’ve just not ever been able to find the original composition. And I have to agree. The mcgavock bands of late 70’s and early 80’s were phenomenal. I go back to mcgavock shows regularly when I want to see and hear what bands used to be. 1979 show is among my favorites.

I recall being told that Jay Dawson arranged the 1982 version. Perhaps it was his composition - not positive.

Scream originated as a trumpet cheer for football games and Jay Dawson expanded it to a proper chart.

Something about McGavok High School. There’s something in the water in that school zone. Annnd amazing directors like Rick Murphy, Jeff Beckman. The legacy is a great one.

Amen! And this is coming from someone who was an Overton freshman that year. That McGavock was the best!

I wish they would go back to this style. Less theatrics and props....Just march and play, march, and play!! We worked our butts off and deserved every point we got!!

I was there and had mad respect for McGavock and Overton (although the feathers were really overrated...sorry, not sorry)
