Tigger won't let me pet new cats

This tuxedo cat has been coming to my back door for a couple weeks now. I have a soft spot for animals in need, so of course I feed and pet him. He is very sweet, as you can see. He has scabs on the back of his neck, and on his ears. He's declawed on the front paws, he's neutered, and has an obvious old injury to his back left leg. The vet said he got it as a kitten, because that leg is actually shorter. I don't know if he's someone's cat or if he's abandoned. I gave him a name, Bootsie, since he comes back every day.
All my cats get irritated when I pet another cat, but Tigger is especially crazy. He is very territorial and protective of his mama (me).
Update (5/3/12)
I thought I had posted an update but I guess I forgot :) I took care of Bootsie for about 9 months, got him vet checked right away (no diseases or microchip), eventually got him shots and put a collar with tags on him. Not long after that, about August 2009, he just disappeared. I placed "lost" posters wherever I could, checked websites, checked the shelter and humane society. I still to this day don't know what happened to him. I'm hoping that someone actually did own him and just freaked out at seeing a collar on him and stopped letting him outside.

Some people in comments are just ignorant. There is nothing wrong with any of the behavior here. Cats are territorial and don't like the scent of unfamiliar cats in their area. There is nothing wrong with the owner trying to take care of a stray or possibly a roaming neighborhood cat (he appears healthy and friendly so either it's a stray that has been taken care of her for a long time, or a neighborhood cat that wanders from home to home.) And no she is not traumatizing them or harming them by exposing the scent of another cat. It's not like they have never caught the scent of another cat before especially considering she has 2 owned cats within her home already.

Jessica Marrero I have a mesh door screen in front of my main door, and there have been a few times when cats come around. I have opened the main door while keeping the mesh door closed so the stray cat doesn't enter and the moment my cat sees the stray cat he will growl and meow aggressively. My cat was the same when I brought in my new kitty. My older cat was named Lulu and my younger cat was named Cinnamon. My cat hated me and hissed at me for the very first time in my 2.5 years of owning her. The vet said that they should get along eventually and Cinnamon would try to play with Lulu at first and she would be so vicious to Cinnamon that one time she made a mark on her face and it started bleeding a little. (Cinnamon's scar is still there). After almost a year they started getting along a bit but Lulu was still annoyed with Cinnamon and Cinnamon would know when to back off. I think they day they both were eating right next to each other in the same bowl was one of the most amazing days as a cat owner because I never thought it would happen. Not too long after that Lulu had liver failure and would not eat anymore and lost 1/3 of her body weight. She ended up dying in the hospital and Cinnamon had been depressed for a while. She would go around the house looking for Lulu and always looked so confused and overall upset. It was heartbreaking to see them just start to get along and then have Lulu pass at 3 years. I think if Lulu was still alive that the both of them could be really close friends. Ever since Lulu died, I watch carefully over Cinnamon and make sure she is eating and healthy and hope when Cinnamon dies she will go to heaven and meet up with Lulu and get along with her☺

First of all dogs are not a better choice, even if they are more active, cats are calmer, not wanting a fuckin walk prob more than twice a day like a dog would want, and also not to mention what do u do when your on vacation? Lend them to friends or other family, I'm pretty sure they would rather risk taking that cat than the dog, for dogs you need to pick up their shit from the outside, take them for walks, deal with the mess, and their horrific smell, the only thing for cats are their litter, food and water and play with them for about 5 min with a toy, that's it, my most main concern of dogs are the smell, even though you can wash them, I would rather not

That's not nice trying to upset Tiger with the scent on your hands from a new cat you brought into your home. That's encouraging bad behaviour on your part. Tiger doesn't trust the new cat you brought into the house yet and is why he keeps his distance. Then you scratch the black cat knowingly getting that cats scent on your hands and then you let Tiger smell that same hand to get him all worked up and mad.. Come on woman. What's wrong with you?

That's not true, I don't know if you ever had a Cat, or more important, more than one cat at the same time. But what she's doing is the right thing to do. The owner pets a bit the new cat, then immediately has to pet the first one, so the latter gets familiar to the scent. It's pretty simple, the older cat won't allow the new cat to come any closer, but the owner is different, the cat will be curious about this new owner's scent, and still is going to eventually want the owner to pet him/her. So the cat after about a month (depending on the cat) calms down. Of course not all cats are the same, but that's one of the first strategies an expert tell you to use. I've tried it myself twice and there's nothing wrong on it, it works perfectly.

Lídice Delgado Ah, yeah, I own 2 cats and have had cats my whole life. I'm 58 and I think I know what I'm talking about here. New cats and existing cats in a home come together on their own terms. They are usually introduced via a see through barrier. You cannot for introduction either cat as in this video. That is considered bad human/animal behavior.

1:21 Okay, this is not how to interact with cats. So many people end up hating cats because they pester them and don't understand how to communicate with them. Poking them while they're scared doesn't build trust and love, it makes them pissy. I've raised my cat to be dog-like in his affection and attachment to me because I respect his signals, build up his trust and make him feel safe around me. He waits for me at the door when I get home. Anyone can have this kind of relationship with almost any cat if they pay attention to the animal and respect it. They're fun to mess with yeah but there's a time and a place.

She shouldn't have introduced the smell of the new cat to the other cats by having it on her. She should have used a small blanket and rubbed it on the new cat and leave the blanket with the other cats so they can get use to the smell of the new cat. She also should keep the new cat in the house but in a different room this way the cats are aware there is a new animal in the house but so that the new cat is not opposing on the other cats territory. Also she shouldn't have been petting the new cat in front of Tigger that upset him especially because it's a cat he is not familiar with and cats get upset just like humans do when they feel like the attention is being shown towards others and not them. I've never introduced an older cat to another older cat before so I have no knowledge of how an older cat acts around another older cat for the first time. I've only had experience with introducing an older cat to a kitten which the older cat (female) didn't take to the kitten (male) at first but eventually they got along. But this is only my opinion based on my own experience with having cats and all cats are different plus there her cats and she can introduce a new cat how ever she sees fit.

Yeah you are upsetting you cat because you are letting these cats into his territory. Introduction to new cats (especially adult ones) needs to be done slowly and carefully. The other cat's smell is on your hand, I believe that's why tiger attacks your fingers. Introduce your new cats by food or put something has his smell in your room. So tiger and others will be familiar with the new cat's smell and won't attack him later. Hope it helps!
