I have reviewed many Achilles tendon videos over the last couple years. This may be the best I have seen, including the anatomic drawings. They show you the anatomy. Excellent, in my opinion. And, podiatrists are experts of the foot and ankle.

3.5 years of this and still dealing with this. Mine is insertional and it is a depressing injury. This video only shows part of what to do and some of what absolutely made mine worse. After not being able to walk well getting out of bed, I scheduled a physical therapist appt. This seemed to help the first couple of times. However, it ultimately made it worse and low and behold the left heel was now hurting. I quit the physical therapy because much of it was stuff you can do at home. I researched more and found better answers. First off, diet is huge. Organic fish oil, vitamin k, d, c. and magnesium really helped heal that area. The accentric heel drops are only ok of you do not keep stretching, so dont do them on a stair, do them on the floor and increase as much as possible. The only other exercise that I felt made a dramatic difference was walking backwards up hill. running uphill with this injury will only cause those tendon fibers to break again causing more pain. At night the boot or brace was helpful as well. Massage the entire calf three times a week with a large wrench, massage the inflamed area lightly and work out them bad build up. Fix your hips, strengthen your hamstrings and glutes, work out knots in the calf, and use a foam roller. Ice did help but it doesnt fix anything. This is an injury depending on severity that takes a lot of effort to get right. My bad heel from 3.5 yrs ago is now 85 percent and my left Id say is 50 to 60 percent. Get good shoes or orthotics, tape up if need be. And whatever you do, dont over work this issue cause youll be back to square one.

The fish oil, etc helped because that's a natural way of reducing inflammation. Leafy greens (raw) help as well. Stretching and most importantly, before trying to "fix it", rest it in a boot for a few weeks, as inconvenient as it may be, and you'll see a world of difference.

I agree I started taking vitamin D3 K2 and magnesium. It could be deficiency not an injury...and yes regular massage to the affected area helped( with magnesium gel)that what I use.. plus soaking legs in warm water with Epsom salts..and now I started running in flexible shoes...those heel lift made my foot pain worse...so minimalist shoes the best.

I've learned to fix my Achilles. When hiking and my Achilles was making me limp I removed my shoe and stretched my foot fascia over a rock or whatever I could find. That told me to regularly roll that part of my foot. What helped me quickly was to use a 10x16 Hydrocollator and heat my calves. I could stretch the calves considerably when heated. The Achilles then was relieved and could actually heal and recover. I did little message of the INFLAMED Achilles but that certainly would have sped recovery. Cold weather always worsens the situation, it makes the calves tighter. So keeping the muscles warmer would either prevent tendonitis or help recovery.

This isn't a simple trick, but rather the most basic of advice. If you truly want to heal Achilles tendinitis, you'll need to wear a boot for a few weeks to negate both plantar as well as dorsal flexion. In other words, let it rest and allow the inflammation to dissipate. Thankfully, you won't need to wear the boot while sleeping, however. Following that period, you'll begin physical therapy, depending upon the severity of your inflammation. Sorry, but there's no quick easy fix. For what it's worth, I have dealt with this with my own Achilles, as well as having done it professionally for over 20 years.

My problem is that I do all of the above plus three months of no athletics and as soon as I go back to soccer i come down with AT again on the right side of the tendon only. My doctor has run complete blood work and there is no lack of essential vitamins detected. Will there be something else that I could have him check for? My shoes are proper and wear an Achilles tape wrap before an athletic activity.

We would love to be able to give you a more specific answer, but unfortunately we cannot do so. These are very complex medical problems that do require specific evaluation in both physical and imaging modalities. Please see a podiatrist near you for further evaluation. We really do appreciate you as a fan and we hope to bring you more detailed videos that help more in the future!

That being said, athletic shoes usually are not that supportive. A more supportive shoe and a good solid insert like a power step full length can be very helpful!

I don’t have pain, I have full range of motion, I jus randomly was running and it felt like it was going to pop or something. It’s not stiff or painful it jus feels like pressure(?) it’s been slightly going away with a lot of stretching , I wonder what it was cause there’s no pain at all just pressure. No swelling or anything I’m just scared to run now.

Except achilles tendonitis is not necessarily an inflamatory problem thus why some people call it achilles tendinopathy. Taking pain killers stops your tendon from healing from microtears. If moving it around and applying ice were a cure for this, then it really wouldn't be the persistent problem many people struggle to get over. I would not follow this advice. It's overly simplistic.

I've watched quite a few videos on this subject and all of them consider stretching and having flexible calves as the key reason.

Actually a lot of people get Achilles tendinitis and Achilles tendinosis mixed up. Tendinosis is the one that is caused from having tears or micro-tears in your tendon. That is a way more serious problem and will need a doctor visit.
